  15. Where to find them, how to build them. *World Edit Included Building a tree isn't as hard as you'd think it is. The most common issue that I had when I began learning how to build trees is that I wanted every tree to look perfect and be symmetrical - don't think like that. Have you ever gone outside and seen two trees that are perfectly rounded? To start off you'll want to pick the location for your tree. I felt that this space was a little empty so I decided I'd be putting a tree in. *do note trees are an excellent way to make your surroundings look more natural and realistic. Now that I've got the location I simply have to build the trunk, say about 4-5 blocks high. You can do higher or lower depending on what type of tree you'd like to make. Trees also aren't perfectly straight upwards, so we want to make it look like it's bending slightly. We can do this by moving the trunk over a few blocks near the top. It should look something like this; Now that we have our trunk, we need to form the branches that the leaves will rest on. Although you won't actually be able to see the branches when the leaves go on, they dictate how the leaves on your tree will form. Start by placing blocks outward from the top block on your trunk and simply make a circular-ish shape so that you have a branching pattern. It's hard to explain but this is what it should look like; The next step is where our World Edit comes in. You'll want to grab any material from the materials tab in your menu so perhaps a blazerod etc/ don't use a block as you won't be able to bind the brush command to a block. Once you have the item in hand type "//brush sphere 17:12 5" *17:12 being the block we are using and 5 being the radius of the brush. You then want to type "//mask 17" This will ensure that our brush will only mask over normal woodblocks, replacing them with the 6 sided wood blocks. This is where the fun part comes in. You want to grab another material from the materials tab in your inventory and hold it. Once you've done that type the command, "//brush sphere leaves 1" *1 being the radius of the brush. And then after that command type "//mask 0". This ensures we're only going to be replacing air with our brush, and not other blocks. Now that you've bound your tool to the commands we can begin brushing on leaves. Simply start clicking around your branches and it will look similar to this to begin with; You want to just build up a large gathering of leaves over the branches that you've set out. Keep clicking over the branches until they're fairly covered. It'll look similar to this; As of now the leaves don't look great, so this is where you can go in and add details with your hand. Try and make sure the foliage is more round than it is flat, as this will make the tree look odd if it is. Once you've fixed up any spots you feel need touched up it should look similar to this; I've also went ahead here and added a few logs to the bottom to make the trunk look more natural as well. After that I replaced them with the 6-sided log also. For the most part your tree is done, you could just perhaps add a few details to the leaves to make it look more interesting. Try placing green banners in the leaves, and also using stained glass to enhance the texture and colour of the leaves. If you'd like you could also mix leaf types. You can also add slabs to the trunk of the tree to make it look more rounded also. In the end you should have something that looks similar to this; Happy Building!
  16. Where to find them, how to build them. Rivers aren't hard at all to make, it's simply the decorating that makes them look nice. To start off you'll want to find a place that you will dig your river; once you have this place, begin digging a 1 block deep layout of your river. Make sure that your river has twists and turns, no river is completely straight. If you're not happy with the shape of your river you can simply change the shape. Once you've got that done simply fill it with water and it should look something like this; Notice how mine curves around things, well rivers naturally do that. Implementing the river into the surroundings will make it look even better. Now that we actually have the river, we can begin making it look good! To start off we'll need to texture the actual river and make it look more appealing. To do so we're going to be putting sediment blocks like gravel, sand and clay along the sides and on the bottom of the river. Just knock out a few blocks along the side of the river and begin replacing them with a mixture of those blocks. Rivers also naturally erode their surroundings so this will also make the river look more realistic. It'll look something like this; Now that we've textured the sides of the river we can texture the bottom. To do so you may want to first make your river a little deeper first - if that's the case break a few blocks under the water in the middle of the river. Don't break every block under the water as no river is 6ft deep everywhere. It's shallower at the sides and then gets deeper as you go into the middle. Now you can simply texture the bottom of the river with the same mixture of blocks; The river is essentially complete at this point, it just needs a lick of paint to make it look more natural. Since it's a body of water - grass and other flora will be in plenty supply around it. You can even place a tree along the bank of the river, or put a small farm next to it. This is where you get to be creative; perhaps you're doing a river in an ice biome, so you can maybe put ice blocks around the edges of the river. This is how mine turned out; Happy Building!
  17. New building guide up for terraforming - rivers will be next I think.

  18. Where to find them, how to build them? *World Edit Included This is perhaps one of the most vital tools when terraforming with World Edit. It allows you to create levels in your land, making sure that your area isn't completely flat and has some depth. Although simple you have to remember that it is an extremely useful and helpful tool to make your builds look better. First you'll need to pick out the areas that you would like to raise/lower and get an idea in your head of what you're wanting to do. I felt that the grass beside this river looked a little odd so I wanted to raise the land slightly. To start brushing you'll want to head to the materials tab in your menu and pick out any material which will act as your brush. I've picked out a stick and a blaze rod. If you use a block, worldedit won't allow you to attach a brush to the item and it won't work - so make sure you've picked out an item from the materials tab. Next, you want to hold the material you want to act as your brush and type of the command "/brush sphere grass 3" *3 being the radius of the brush. You'll the want to simply start clicking where you would like the land to be raised. You'll notice that it will come out it big spheres and not really look very natural yet, however we'll be fixing that in the next step. You're aiming to place the blocks down roughly where you would like the land to be raised. It'll look something like this in the end. You can layer the spheres over one another if you'd like to raise the land higher also. If you'd like to lower the land simply type this command instead of the last one; "/brush sphere 0 3" *0 being the block we're bushing with - "air", 3 being the radius of the brush. When you right click with this brush it will remove blocks since we are replacing them with air. Now that we've placed generally where we'd like our land to be raised/lowered we need to smooth out the terrain so that it doesn't look as blocky. This however is extremely easy with World Edit; simply hold another material in your hand and type the command "/brush smooth 2" *2 being the radius of the brush. This brush essentially gets rid of all of the nasty sharp edges that were created by our sphere tool. All you have to do is right click with it and it will even out the land. It should look something like this; That's everything to this guide. It's a really simple tool which can have a lot of power to make your builds look better if used correctly. All you have to do now is detail the land to make it look prettier. Happy Building!

  19. Where to find them, how to build them. *World Edit Included Starting off with your ridges, you'll want to map out the general design you're going for using wools or different coloured clays. I've done this, the grey being where I want the ridge to start, the blue being a river and the green being grass. This is what I started out with; Once you've gone and planned out your general design you'll want to find get an item such as a stick or a blaze rod and hold it in your hand. (It can really be anything from the materials tab.) Once you're holding the item you'd like to begin using as a brush you want to type out the command "/brush sphere 1 3" *1 being the material id you are using, and 3 the radius of the brush. Now, once you right click with the item that you had in your hand you will place down a block of stone, this is what we'll be using to form the bulk of the ridge. Now simply start placing these blocks of stone along the line that you had defined for your ridge. You can go outside the lines - you don't have to be perfect with it. If you feel you've made a mistake you can undo it by simply typing "//undo". Now that we've done that we want to start layering more blocks of stone over the ones that we have already placed down, this then gives the ridge height. It will look very crude when you start putting them down but don't worry we'll be fixing this in a later step. Just start clicking atop the blocks that you've already placed down, trying not to go outside of the line that you'd previously set out. I recon this is a good height, so I'll stop here. The block at the moment looks very crude and unnatural so we're going to need to smooth it out slightly. To do so get another material item from your inventory and hold it in your hand, then type the command. "/brush smooth 2". This brush that we've just equipped will smooth out terrain for us and make our build look less lumpy. However, we can only use it on the top of the ridge, if we used it on the sides it would turn the ridge into a hill. So simply drag your brush across the top of the ridge to make it look more flat and natural. It should come out looking something like this. I wasn't happy with how mine looked so I decided to equip another stone brush with a radius of 1 this time. I simply brushed into small areas and filled them out more. After I had done this, I also went to the bottom of the ridge and filled it out with the smaller brush too. This makes the grass flow more naturally into the ridge and makes it look less unnatural. All you have to do is fill in the gaps that have been created at the bottom so it looks something like this; After that had been done, I went back to the top of the ridge and smoothed it out again with the command that was shown previously - the result looks much better now. This is the end of the brushing stage, as we've finally got a general shape for our ridge. It doesn't look very good at the moment however we'll be able to add more detail to in the next few steps to make it look more like an actual ridge. The ridge currently doesn't look very good, and you'll have to do this next step by hand - simply start going along with a stone block and filling in all of the gaps to make the face of the ridge look more natural and smooth. You'll want to use the current blocks you have and simply fill them out so that they blend all together. It should end up something similar to this; It's starting to look a lot more like a ridge now that we've smoothed it out. I hope you can guess what the next thing to do is; because it's such an important step. We need to texture the stone so that we are looking at the same block texture over and over again whilst we're looking at the build. However since we have access to World Edit we can easily texture the stone. Get another material item from your inventory and hold it in your hand, then type the command "/br sphere 40%1,30%4,30%1:5 5" *40%1,30%4,30%1:5 being the composition of materials and 5 being the radius of the brush. However if we started placing it down now, we'd have huge blocks of stone appearing in the air, we simply want to replace the stone blocks with what we have defined in our last brush - so to do this, keep holding the material you previously selected in your hand and type "//mask 1" *1 being the material we are masking over. Now you've set your mask, start to right click on the stone, however try not to right click on the same spot too much, this will cause all of the stone to be replaced with cobblestone and andesite. In the end you'll have something that looks like this; The last part of this step is to simply add grass atop our ridge. You can do this again with the //mask command - however if you are set your brush size to 1 so that you're simply getting at the top layer of the ridge. Alternatively you can still replace the blocks by hand. You should end up with something looking like this; At the moment it looks kind of weird because it's a straight line of grass over the top. To fix this, simply replace some of the stone underneath the grass blocks to dirt, making it look more natural. And lastly, to make our ridge look integrated into the flat terrain we already have - simply place a few grass blocks around the bottom of the ridge so that it doesn't look like it's sticking out from the earth in a 90% angle. We want it to blend with the terrain below. The next step! Also a very important step is to use cobblestone half slabs and stairs to make the edges of the ridge look more curved and natural. You just have to place the blocks where the stone ends or curves - in the end it should look similar to this; You've essentially created your ridge now, all you have to do is detail it to give it visual aesthetic. I finished off my river, added a few leaves to the side of the ridge and added a small waterfall running from the side of the ridge. You however can do anything with your ridge, perhaps you'd like to put a cave in it which leaves to a monster den, or you'd like there to be a stone staircase in it which leads to the manor above. Be creative with your ideas and I hope you have fun building!

  21. Where to find them, how to build them. Like with every other building guide I have done, finding a suitable location for your farm is very important! If you place a farm in the middle of the desert it won't make much sense and won't look natural - unless it's beside an oasis... Nevertheless you'll want to pick a nice flat area which has a source of water nearby which will make the soil nice and most. I've decided to place mine here - notice the large river being a suitable source of water, and being on a relatively flat piece of land. Although I did mention that it was important to have a flat piece of land, you still want to give your farm some depth. If your current area is completely flat you'll want to follow this step; simply start by placing down blocks and creating raised land. It doesn't have to be a huge mountain, perhaps just an area of one or two blocks height. You can even do the opposite by lowering the ground to create a decompression. This looks good, it's a small patch of land that raises the ground level to simply make our build look a bit more interesting. Now to continue we'll need to place water blocks spread out over the land we want to use. Without water the farmland won't very well stay farmland. Just break a few blocks randomly and place a water block into the space. Once you're done you should have something that looks similar to this. This once again, is a very important step to making your farmland look good! You need to texture the ground, just like we texture cave walls or cliff faces. This can be done with a variety of materials - podzol, coarse dirt, soulsand. I've opted for podzol and coarse dirt - all you need to do is break randomly at the grass blocks and replace the gaps with your selected material. However! Remember to leave some grass as we'll need to hoe this to create farmland. Now that we've prepared our land, we can get to actually planting crops! Whip out your trusty hoe and start smacking it into the ground randomly. You don't want to hit all of the grass blocks as they make for a nice colour contrast. Once you've done it should look something like this; The next step is really easy! Get a handful of different plants in your hand - so carrots, beets, potatoes, seeds etc and start to randomly plant them in the farmland. You'll want to get an even spread of them, so try not to get too much in one area or it will look odd. You can use just one type of plant, however the farmland may not look as appealing in the end due to the different colours the different plants offer. Once you've planted your seeds, bonemeal away! This last step simply brings the farm all together! All you need to do is decorate the remaining space with tall grass or ferns; perhaps a few flowers. You can also even add a few bushes along your field and maybe even a scarecrow if you're worried about those pesky birds. Simply hit the decorations tab and use whatever you think will look nice. This is how I finished mine; And that's it! You've successfully made a wonderful looking farm in no time at all! I hope this guide has helped you, happy building!
