  1. Magic is a part of the server and the lore, but not in as a mechanical / gameplay feature. You're not going to see fireballs whizzing about the screen, it's all done through RP emoting.

    How it works:

Your character can learn a variety of different magics. Here's a link to the magic lore junction. Voidal is probably where you'll find familiar types of magic and so is a good place to begin, but do browse through because there's a lot of really good stuff in every category.

Magic can be really difficult to learn/obtain, especially at the start when your character hasn't met anybody. It took me more than a real life year of constant searching to find my first teacher, this was for the most common evocation.

Once you find a teacher, you apply on the forums for the staff to accept it. This confirms that the character can begin to learn the magic.

It's not a case of just reading about it OOC, learning how it works, then doing it on your character. Even if you, the user, knows how it all works, your character must learn it through in-character roleplay, and through the application system.

Here's a link to the most recently accepted apps - an [MA] is a magic app, if you're curious as to what these look like.

    Other:

Some magics have downsides that need to be role played, but this is always detailed in the magic lore posts on the forums. For instance voidal magic, perhaps the most readily available type of magic, comes with voidal poisoning that makes a character physically weak as they progress their magic ability.

Some magics may be seen as controversial (in RP).

It can be overwhelming at the start, but you don't need to learn everything about every magic.

Ultimately, don't expect finding a teacher to be a fast or easy process, but you'll get there with persistence, if it's what you really want to do.

Feel free to pm me with any Qs!

  2. Ripplewick skim reads the flyer.

'Boat race, rowing, very good... f-five hundred minas!?'

                                                                       ***

An hour later and he's standing upon the edge of the Talon's Port docks, looking down upon his seaweedy old rowboat. It was cold, and his ears were aching.

'I've rowed to Elvenesse and back, in this thing,' he thunk to himself. 'Now it'll be my ticket to riches.'

He leapt down into the rowboat, impacting with a 'K'bonk!'. Immediately, the vessel began to drift away, but far worse, it also started to sink.

With the dock too far gone to save himself, Ripplewick stared at the huge hole he'd been too lazy to fix, helpless as he and the boat sank diagonally a few feet away from the dock, looking like a defiant castaway atop a melting iceberg.

Once the soggy wizard had pulled himself onto land again, and finished his shivering and self pity, he thought that all in all things had gone as well as they usually do.

He marks the date in his dripping pocketbook.

  3. Ripplewick studies the flier twice over, and then once more to be sure. He'd experience some warm sense of belonging, but the feeling is novel to him and he'd dismiss it. The wizard had just supposed he was hungry.

Fortunately, he'd been heading to Talon's Port regardless after hearing rumours and whispers of food stalls.

On the back of a 'lucky scroll' that he'd been convinced into purchasing, (which contained only a recipe for a thin, bland stew in a language that Ripplewick could not discern), he scrawled the details and resumed his peregrination.

  4. Ripplewick had spent a lot of time in Talon's Port as of late.  He was elsewhere, though, when he discovered this flyer.

It seemed too serendipitous to ignore, and he made a note that he should attend...

Besides, Ripplewick would never miss an event with food stalls.

  6. Ripplewick reads the rules and, excited, purchases a deck of Caravan cards to play with his dearest landlord, maybe even hoping to wager a double or nothing on this month's rent!?

In his quarters, deciding it best to begin by practicinhis shuffle, the clumsy wizard paper-cuts his fingers thrice and then hurls his deck into his wall.  The stack of cards dissipates into many, all fluttering to an eventual rest against timber planks.

Ripplewick blows on his poor wounded fingers, retrieves his cards, orders them, and begins to shuffle again...

Belvitz was great, lots of easily accessible RP for anybody who wanted to get involved. It really felt open to everyone. Nice!

  8. Ripplewick reaches to sign the petition, but his writing hand halts midway towards parchment with a near audible creak.

Spotting 'Title II Chapter One', knowing not which magic the pious may consider to be dark, or if the mere act in itself was enough, he was left uneasy. Himself ignorant of how to query this without self-incrimination, he decided instead it'd be best if he made himself scarce.

He trudges elsewhere. He picks his nose and flicks something onto the sod beneath his feet. He supposed it mattered not whether he, whether who, or how many would go on to sign the petition. Whether each nation may run concomitant with strife as one problem replaces another for the rest of time, whether each may cease.

  9. Beneath smouldering timber ribs that had once been a cottage, but now closely resembled the long-beached carcass of some infant Cetacea, lay nestled a tiny hewn rock cellar...

Ripplewick was perched on a stool in this cellar with his cheek in his hand, mouth ajar. He watched a single plain potato roast slowly on a spit over a hushed fire with no wood or fuel beneath it. He stood and paced, five steps from one char-blackened wall to the next, keeping his sorry little spud in eyeshot all the while.

In one corner of this room lived a wobbly alder table, itself domicile to an assortment of tomes and papers and several stumpy wax candles. The wizard ceased his pacing to visit this corner and at once, the cooking fire withdrew, its absence submerging the cellar in pitch blackness. There was the smell of smoke and then nothing.

Atop each candle on the table, tiny sparks crept into existence. A moment later, each candle fully incandesced with jam-coloureflame, basking the disorder of documents in a flickering purple-red glow. Ripplewick moved aside his first-edition copy of  'Sprites: Friend or Foe? (& Other Advice for Lonely Men)'. Beneath it, for safekeeping, he had placed his copy of the notice from The Enchantry, which he'd nabbed from a noticeboard earlier in the day.

Taking this, and munching his crispy spud, Ripplewick left his cellar for Lorena's Wharf IV, his tip of his hat bobbing along at each step.

Why seek membership to the Mages Guild?

I look not only to further my own understanding of the world of the Arcane and place therein, but as well wish to contribute towards it in whatever way I am able - tutoring, assisting, or otherwise. I also wish to adhere to the philosophies of the Arcanicum, and follow the ethical boundaries it presents.

Outside of dedicating myself to the Guild, I would like to be in the presence of other mages and listen to their lovely,  enchanted anecdotes - perhaps over a meal of plain bread and watery soup...? I make a sometimes-very-acceptable watery soup.

What arts, if any, do you currently practice?

    Fire Evocation (T5)

What position do you desire to attain upon acceptance?

    Adeptus Minor (ideally).

Though technically a qualified teacher, I am not experienced in tutoring - however I would like to contribute (in the way of tutoring/otherwise) as soon as I am capable or required to do so.

When should you be contacted for an interview?

Any time, at the moment - ideally between 13:00 and 00:00 GMT.

  11. Ripplewick shuddered at the slander. Never again in all of the world’s turning would there be a time separate from horror if not supposedly brought upon the land by the Voidal craft then by man or mer upon themselves. The wizard’s brow furrowed and on his face dwelled fear, all history present in that visage.

Where before had laid nothing now danced a fire the man had willed into existence. From it he retrieved his skewer of charred meat and he chewed.

  12. I really like the writeup. It is straightforward, clear, great use of examples and I don’t think the combat spell list is too shallow. Refines what has been there before without the vagueness. Good job to all involved

Edit: I do wonder if there should be a weaker spell that takes less emotes for Tier 4 users. Fireball has had a tendency to be the ‘go to’ spell for general combat, almost the light attack of this magic in a way. However at 4 emotes it won’t be the case, a long charge up for a (somewhat) basic and small payoff.

‘Flamethrower’ seems to want to fill this space of a more ‘novice’ spell but even then takes an equal 4 emotes and more concentration and mana to utilise. Just noting this on my second readthrough. It is very rare that I combat RP so I could be wrong, I’m just pointing it out as a possible grievance some may have down the line.

What magic(s) will you be teaching?

    Fire Evocation

Summarise the Lore of this magic(s):

    A Brief Summary

Evocation is one of the most basic magics in the known world, and as such, one of the most commonplace. At its core, evocation is the practice of creating an element in the void and from there, pulling it into the mortal plain for a limited time, with potential for various purposes ranging from domestic applications to usage in combat.

Elemental evocations are, in turn, the most widespread forms of evocation. In the case of fire evocation, the practice may be looked at in two halves – after the user has connected, the first half is to evoke flames within the void. The second half is the act of pulling these flames into our world, the mortal plain, and utilising them.  This process is fuelled by one’s mana, which can be considered as an individual’s magical energy. An example of domestic use is to stoke the flames of a hearth, or light a torch or candle. An example of use in combat is to cast and throw a fireball, or for more powerful wielders, a wall of flame between themselves and a target to stop the opponent’s advance. Additionally, there are some sub-functions of fire evocation which are seen commonly in the modern day – these includes smoke evocation, which is the art of conjuring smoke without a flame – often to confuse or disorientate an opponent without hurting them - and heat evocation, the art of evoking heat, often utilised for domestic applications such as warming oneself in a cold climate.

    Behaviour of Evoked Flames

Though flames evoked in the void and pulled into our world look, seem, and act like real flames, it is best to consider, in study, that it is a separate element with a few properties unique to itself.

Evoked fire is as volatile as flames created in our own world, though it can be manipulated into crude shapes (except in certain cases, such as with the use of primordial conjuration) in ways that normal fire can not. Additionally, experienced fire evokers are known to utilise their mana to add more heat to their conjured flame. To do so will, at a certain point, see an orange or reddish flame become a blue flame.

Blue flames are said by scholars to be hotter than lava – only experienced fire evocationists may wield flames this hot, and even then, their mana will drain at a rate much faster than with a normal degree of fire evocation. To add yet more heat will result in a white flame, though no uccessful attempt to wield white-fire has occured, with all recorded instances resulting in immediate death for the wielder and at times, those around them.

Voidal fire can influence the mortal world – casting a fireball at a tree will set it on fire, and casting fire onto steel will temper it. As it mostly behaves like fire from our world, it requires air and space for it to exist, and without one or the other, voidal fire will cease to be.

    Studying, Teaching, and Casting

Regardless of the evocation in question, an aspiring evocation student must first know their element inside and out. It is incredibly important to know the characteristics of a flame, both visual and kinetic, and even the fine details such as the smell and taste of fire, otherwise the mage will be simply unable to replicate the element within the void.

An applicable quote from a popular, well-worn textbook on the subject found within the Library of Dragur states simply that “If you have no knowledge on it, you simply can’t create it.”

It must be considered that a mage is not taking fire from a magical source of infinite flame within the void, but rather they are creating the fire there themselves via their connection, fuelled by their own mana, and pulling it forth from there. Because of one’s mana being used as a fuel for the evocation, a user will find themselves being fatigued – significantly, at first, though to a lessened extent with experience and time (though this also depends on the scale that the evocation is used at any given time, with the size, heat intensity, and length all affecting the amount of mana being drained).

As such, despite being the most commonplace of the element evocations, fire evocation is by no means something that may be learned as a hobby. To dedicate oneself to the study of any evocation is to work tirelessly with each passing day.  A large amount of time of study time will pass before the student is able to conjure a candle-flame, let alone a fireball or utilities beyond that level. Even with dedicated study, it will still take many years to become an expert in the field, and longer still to master it.

    Tiers of Learning

A student is often divided into various tiers of the learning process. The amount of time spent within each tier depends on the student’s own practice and dedication, as well as how many lessons they take in said time.

Tier 1: Includes those who have just began their learning process, with the start of this tier being the time in which one is learning the properties of fire, and the end of it being the point in which one can conjure a simple spark or, at most, a short-lived candle-flame.

Tier 2: Includes the period in which weak flames are able to be cast. Often, the majority of the time in this tier will be simple practical study on increasing the longevity of holding a small flame, with those later into the tier also beginning to increase the temperature and size of the flame.

Tier 3: Includes the period in which a caster begins to exhibit greater control over their flame – it is generally during this time that a caster will begin to practice with their first basic combat applications, such as fireballs. Heat evocation may be learned during this stage.

Tier 4: Includes the period in which the caster is exhibiting great control over their flame, and begins to take steps toward mastery. A long-lasting tier, smoke evocation may be learned during this time, and the exceptionally talented may attempt a blue flame with great caution.

Tier 5: Includes those who have dedicated many years to the evocation, and no longer will they have many troubles with simple spells or applications. A tier 5 caster may perhaps be considered a master of their craft.

    Misc.

    - Though an evocationist may pull create and pull forth a flame from the void, they can not control fire that already exists in the mortal plain. For instance, a fire evocationist can not douse or influence a flame in a fireplace, though they can create flame and add to it, if it is waning.

    - Flames can not be summoned in a location one cannot see with their own eyes.

    - A wielder may not create shapes (except crude ones after T3, eg. a fireball) without the use of primordial conjuration.

Magic should be more rare to find. Every other person I have encountered knows some sort of Evocation or Magic.

Agreed, but this is never going to happen due to the very nature of the way magic is spread on LOTC – The fact that players learn magic off each other means that there are tons of players who are just learning magic by asking their friends to teach them it OOCly, via Discord or some such. I have always completely stayed away from any OOC stuff like this and always have when it comes to any RP I’ve done on server and as such it took me over a real life year to learn Fire Evo on my character, doing it strictly through RP.

On paper, it works fine if people aren’t meta-gaming it – but it feels like almost everyone is. That’s because nobody wants to look around ICly for a year. I have no idea why I did it legitimately, I had many many chances to just ask people OOCly but never did, not sure why, there wouldn’t have been a consequence. It is more convenient for players to gain access to magic by OOC meta-play whilst on server, there are very very few organisations/groups/schools/guilds that are a) active and b) allowing players into the fold.

Whether or not all of this is a bad thing is up to you.

Regarding magic in general, I think that due to the fact there exists so many schools of magic, a completely factual database of redlines and rules for each individual magic type needs to be created somewhere, with the magic staff signing off on it or creating/gathering the information for it themselves. I have no idea whether the various topics on the forums such as ‘Fire Evocation Guide’ you find around are fully legitimate, accurate, or even up-to-date. Many in-game books and things like that clash with the guides on the forums.

This would be a very daunting task for the staff though and I’m not sure it would happen. It is just extremely difficult to know when a player is powergaming their magic or not because the redlines are quite difficult to be fully aware of. I have seen some magic RPers in pretty prominent positions such as court mages, etc.  completely break redlines for their magic such as creating shapes with fire evocation without knowledge of primordial conjuration, and so on. This only really matters in combat RP, of course.

  16. Artwinkle Ripplewick scratched at his chin as he eyeballed the family tree, yanking out a few hairs in the process, stunned at the sight of seven wizard sons were born under Septimus Dimpledorc, only relieved that it was indeed seven and not ei... One more than seven.

Tracing the tree back, he’d then be surprised to see the great wizard Blundermore towards the top, a figure whom’s exploits were revered in the comparatively short-lived and significantly less impressive Ripplewick family.  Artwinkle was naive then and he was still naive now, so he supposed it didn’t much matter whether the stories his mother had told him as a child were true.

    ...

As his daydreaming concluded, Ripplewick closed the “Big Book of Family Lineages (Magical)” that he had procured in the local library and scribbled his learnings in his personal tome.

  17. On the other side of Arcas, a scraggly red-robed wizard eyed through the contents of the flyer. At roughly the same time as his gaze landed on ‘Wizard’s Powder’ and the description thereof, he found that his legs were carrying him at a sprint past the city gate and towards Sutica.

Travellers on the road would later remark at the sight of some red oddball, stopping every thirty feet and gasping for breath as he passed them, carrying his staff like a lance in one hand and clutching a pamphlet in the other.

  18. A red-robed figure trundled unto the city gate of Reza, sharp of speed and red of face, with a crooked wizard’s hat that flopped in time on the bounce of his purposeful sprint. Under his left arm, he carried something garish and yellow, whilst in his right arm the tall staff that normally supported his pace was currently being held outward like a lance, as this figure had recently listened to a scholar’s lecture on ‘air-oh! dynamics’, and confidently reckoned that this new way of staff-holding would increase his speed tenfold.

As Ripplewick neared the gate guards, he halted.

“Full name, and reason for visi-“ the armour-clad footman would begin, before the red wizard would interrupt, with more bravery and rudeness than he would have dared on a normal occasion.

“Is!...” is all he’d initially blurt out, before wheezing and coughing.“Is it true, then, the news of the King?”

The first guard, though initially offering only a frustrated grunt at the interruption, would soon resume his stoic demeanour. “True as steel. King Robert passed some days ago. Reza mourns his loss.”

Though Ripplewick didn’t truly know the King of Haense, it was in this moment that he remembered an occasion wherein King Robert and one of his Knights visited the home of himself and his elderly housemate, Tidwald. The pair of them, peeping out of a fault in the wall of their home, terrified that a King was about to be here at their hovel, zipped around the house as Robert wandered up the path, desperately throwing the scattered belongings and items into cupboards and under stairs, and generally out of the direct sight of a visitor. But when he did arrive, Robert showed nothing but gratitude for the hospitality as the two peasants made tea and presented cake for their royal guests. Of all of the Monarchs he had both met and had not met, Ripplewick felt King Robert might be the most fair and kind.

But now, Tidwald had passed, the King had passed, and the Knight, being a Knight, could well have also passed in some sort of brave and heroic act for the Kingdom and its people, as Knights tend to do brave and heroic things like that.

“Ahem!”, the second gate guard began. You must tell us your name and reason for entering, or we cannot allow you passage into Reza.”

Ripplewick picked at his progressively greying beard for but a few seconds before turning on his heel and beginning away from the City, unsure of what might be left here for him. “Thank you both for your time, but it’s private, wizard business, see,” he shot. “I’ll just be on my way.”

As the red robed man scarpered off, he dropped the pair of buttery yellow boots he had been carrying with him. This was particularly embarrassing as he thought he had perhaps seemed mysterious and enigmatic by refusing his identity, but dropping a pair of grave-robbed yellow wellies immediately after his exit, still in view of the guards, had ruined his own illusion of himself and reminded him that he is mostly nought but a clumsy fool. Scooping them up, full of humiliated volition, Ripplewick began Southward.

  19. Upon entering the sleepy Belvitz tavern, a nervous wizard draped in shades of red noticed that for the first time in some weeks, the normally thriving establishment was void of other citizens.

As he neared his favourite spot by the hearth, and double-checking that he was indeed alone, Ripplewick evoked some embers in the fireplace which rejuvenated the waning flames.

Sitting in his favourite seat and rubbing his hands together, he pondered over how he might help in the coming weeks, and how this approaching blizzard might impact his commute between his Markev home and elsewhere.

But, soon, the bartender emerged, and subsequently Ripplewick’s pondering was brought to an end as he found himself ordering a nice, hot, baked potato.
