On Pipeweed

by Rhody Hollowmead

Historically, Halflings have always been lovers of the plants of the world and things that can be grown and put to good use. Thus, these natural farmers were among the first to discover the many uses of plants, including the smoking of them - namely pipeweed.

Smoking pipeweed is one of the favorite pastimes of the Halfling race, it is part of their daily routine, and some Halflings smoke several times daily! One item a good, traditional Halfling never leaves home without is his pipe. Smoking alone, smoking with friends in the tavern, smoking with old wizards... Smoking, smoking, smoking is what Halflings love.

Pipeweed patches have always been scattered across Halfling villages and they always will be, to keep up with the demand of all townsfolk. Pipeweed must be grown very close to water, or else it will shrivel and die at a very young age. The larger a leaf is, the more sweet it tastes, and the smaller a leaf is, the more bitter it tastes. Since flavor is based on preference, many families grow different strains of pipeweed (the most famous being Petyr's leaf). Pipeweed MUST be dried before smoking - the longer it dries, the better! A raw leaf is hard on the throat, a nice dry one is easy to smoke.

Beside its medicinal value (comfort, mainly), smoking pipeweed is an art. Many people have developed the ability to blow rings instead of clouds. Some say there are wizards who can create pictures with their smoke, images of dragons and ships and horses, everything! However, it needn't be fancy to be good.

The smoking of pipeweed has spread globally since the early days, first to the Dwarves and next to the Wizardfolk of the world. Since, it has been spread to the Elves and Humans. Such a tradition, started by the Little Folk! Orcs ought to stay away from this fine art, however, as they are distasteful creatures.

In conclusion, this has been a summary of the great plant that the Halflings cultivated in days of old, pipeweed. Use it well, and do not forget how beautiful pipeweed is!

Note: Pipeweed should NOT be confused with Orcweed, a leaf that muddles the mind and clouds the brain. We leave the smoking of that ill-bidden plant to the Greenskins and their magic bearing elders.
