ROLE-PLAYING GUIDE!

Hello! I have created a guide to help players understand and hopefully help improve there Role-playing skills. In this guide I will give you a few Tips and Rules to RPing. From creating your character, to getting a good reputation with others. Follow my guide and I assure you, you will become a pro in no time. :)

First thing you need to do is make a good first impression. When you make a good impression with another player, it will increase the chance of them RPing with you. How do you do this? Well I will tell you...

[Grammar]: Grammar makes a HUGE difference between people wanting to RP with you, and people calling you a Noob. Using correct spelling and capitalization, and throwing in a few big words will get you some brownie points. ^_^ If you have someone using L33T or faces :3 in RPing, it instantly makes the other player feel like you are childish and not up to a serious RP. But, if you use correct spelling and use a wide vocabulary, people will instantly give you more respect.

Right way of RPing: *Looks to the stranger approaching Him/Her with a smile. He/she gives the stranger a small wave. "Hail! May I help you with something?"

The -WRONG- way: yo sup? i am uberl33t yo n i kan kil pplz betr than u

The difference is quite obvious...

[using EMOTES]: Emotes are always a plus, it adds a sense of life to the RP and makes things more realistic. It also helps the other player understand what you are doing. Short emotes like "*cuffs" Or "*bored" Are bad examples of Emotes. What makes a good emote then? Well... "*holds the worn dagger in his/her hand. He/She runs their fingers along the cold steel, seeming let their mind wander." That gives a player a good first impression.

[Just being nice OOCly] Being nice OOCly will make others want to RP with you, and wait for you to get online just to RP with you again. If you are nice OOCly and love to socialize... Well guess what? (+10 brownie points) :3)

Now you know how to make a good first impression... I am going to teach you how to make a good character and how to RP like a pro :D

[How to build a character]: It's smart to build a character off events that have happened to her/him. Say for example... Let's say you character gets into a fight with someone else, and they happen to get cut along their lip. You character would likely now have a scar there. Scars build character, they show your character has been through a lot and has experience. When a character has an important event happen to them, you do not just ignore it. Find ways to fix the solution ICly or just live with the problem. Problems build character, for example... My character (Natheus) Had his hands removed by some guards. I decided to go with him having no hands for the moment. He cannot use swords since he had no hands, so I thought for a moment. I decided to turn him to necromancy and magic to make up for his lack of hands. Things like this make a huge difference in the development of your character.

[Do not be afraid to lose!]: Losing a fight is not necessarily bad. In fact, it's a chance to open new RPing possibilities. Take my character for example, he lost his hands. This makes RPing interesting and fun! Now I can choose how my character will deal with this, I could either make him deal with it, or he could find ways to get hands again. I made him turn to necromancy, to make up for the lack of hands. He needs someway of defending himself so he must use magic. Over time he may even find ways of using dark magic to regrow hands, or even attach hands from a corpse to his own body. Things like this make your character unique and professional.

[Make sense!]: When I RP, a majority of people that make no sense what-so-ever. When you RP, you must take your characters abilities, and limits to account. If you character is the agile type, he/she will most likely dodge slow attacks and will definitely not beat a roid-ragin' Orc in a arm wrestling competition. You cannot make your character some "invincible god-like uber l33t badass" that can take on the kingdom of Oren alone. It's just not going to happen, get over it (Only I am capable of such awesome power... Lol jk :3). Anyway, just be fair, have a weakness, and just enjoy this game for what it really is... A game.

[Do not Metagame/Powergame!]: Do not meta/powergame... It's dumb and it simply ruins the RPing fun. It's more fun to play correctly and have a challenge. If you Meta/Powergame, people will not respect you and not want to RP with you... And you will probably get banned anyway.

HOW TO BE BOTH A GOOD VILLAIN, AND A CONVINCING ONE

Alright, how does one become a good villain? Well, a villain isn't just a big bully that takes your lunch money... No, A true villain is one who is a threat to others, one that finds satisfaction in watching the suffering of others. Villains can range from Sadistic murderer, to psychopathic maniacs. I will be telling you how to RP like a villain, hopefully this helps and you can become a true enemy of aegis.

[How a villain should act]: There is no right or wrong way when playing a villain. Some villains look harmless, Some villains make themselves known as a wrong doer. Either way you are free to choose how your character acts... What makes your character good and convincing is how you use him/her. You must always remember to stick to character, try and avoid changing his/her personality or decide to make him/her act different because you get bored (Unless you have a valid RP reasoning for her/him changing. Otherwise, stay with your character). No, if you are going to make a evil character, you must be committed to making him/her convincing, and a well developed character. No one is born evil, things happen to them in life that makes them choose that path. Whether it's following their parents, or a mental illness, Every villain has a reason for choosing their dark path. Remember, believe you are your character, think like your character, basically -be- your character. (In game of course... I don't need a lawsuit because some idiot robbed a bank after reading this... >.> lol)

[Ways of making a convincing, and scary character]: There are many ways to make your character feared by others, I will just give you ideas to help you get started...

-Issues- Issues make a scary character. It makes people feel uncomfortable around them, not sure what they will do at any moment. I am not saying Killing without RP, What I mean is having your character act psychotic, angry, sad, have them speaking to themselves, anything that makes others uncomfortable around you. Small things such as a character laughing hysterically and rocking in a corner makes others naturally uneasy around you. This helps build uncomfort, and fear when others see you. Even phobias make great character builders! For example, my character has a phobia of large crowds. In some cases, if he cannot escape them, he will lash out, trying to get away from everyone, yelling and flailing a blade at people near him. Things like that, they help with beginning great RP events.

-Smarts- A smart Villain, is a dangerous villain. No one will be afraid of a villain running into Al'Khazar with a stick trying to pants everyone that walks by him/her. If you do that, people will instantly lose respect for you OOCly, and find you pathetic ICly. But when you have a villain that plans out attacks, Uses others against each other... Well then you got one hellofa' villain. Your villain will be known for their evil deeds, people will speak rumors of your actions and some will come to fear you. But be careful, if you get too much of a bad name, people will become sick of you and try and wipe you from existence... This is where my next tip comes in.

-Subtlety- Those who prefer to keep a anonymous standing will probably be one of secrecy. This is good for people who want to keep a good reputation, but cause havoc behind everyone's backs. This is also a smart way of becoming a successful villain. For example... You have someone who is everyones best friend, he/she runs for an important title. He/she will get the support of others and eventually, when you get all that power in your hands, you use it against everyone who trusted you. A good way to show your RPing ability and cunning.

-Dark deeds- Doing sick, heartless and just unspeakable horrors will make others fear you. How can someone do this? Well, Cannibalism, Torturing others, Necrophilia, Collecting body parts, self infliction, Writing with blood in a journal, whatever you can think of that makes you sick yourself, is great to use with your character. You will become infamous with your hellish deeds or desires.

All of these hints are great to use... But they wont be if you don't do it right! Be sure to be convincing! Use emotes like "*begins to slice into his/her own skin, cutting a massive X on their chest". I don't know about you but if I saw that I would be pretty freaked out. You cannot just go... "*tortures" Use detail, gross the other player out >:3 make them feel like "Wow! This person is serious!" When you have people literally having to go OOC and tell you how f-ed up you are... You know you convinced them enough. But do remember this is a game, none of what you do in here should be taken literally, tell others you are just IC and be sure not to summon a gate to the nether in your neighborhood -.-'

[iMPORTANT]: Remember! Some people find things offensive, too disturbing, or just something against their personal nature. PLEASE! A good villain will ask OOCly if what you do in game is alright with them! I always ask before doing something that may offend someone else. Please remember you are in a game, and you are here for fun! Don't hurt peoples feelings, make them feel comfortable with what you do. If someone says 'No' it's 'No'. You can be a jerk ICly, but remember who your are in real.

TIPS ON STARTING A GUILD

Some people sometimes have trouble making guilds. If it's getting them started or simply not knowing what to do. I will help you out and show you what you need to do to make a successful guild

I will not lie to you, making a guild does take time and patients. You must have strong leadership skills and the 'know how' to be a leader. Before you begin making your guild, you must figure out what exactly your guild will do, how it will work, and how you will organize it. Make sure you stick to the lore of LoTC, but other than that, let your mind free to ideas. I will give you an example, Let's say Bob -- > d-(^-^ )z Wants to make a guild? The first thing you need to do is find some friends you can trust to help you. Get about 3 or more people that you honestly trust to help you when it comes to running your guild. Now that Bob has a few friends to aid him, let's start talking about how you guild will work...

It's nice to write down or take notes on how your guild will function. For this example, Bob will be making a Miners guild. But if he is going to make a guild, he will need a HQ or a base where everyone can meet up. It's wise to find an area that will fit you guilds role. For example a miners guild would likely find a place close to a city and where there is a good plot of land to mine. Once Bob has claimed a peice of land, he can begin to get to work. [Note: Having someone with VIP to protect the land claimed is a good idea.]

Step 1.) Make a series of rules/laws that your guild must follow. Make them fair and reasonable to others and a punishment for those who break them. Without order in your guild, madness will follow and you will quickly crumble.

Step 2.) Before you start recruitment, build some housing and some safe deposits for your members or employees so they have a place close to you that they can stay in. This will ensure that your members will be encouraged to work for the benefits.

Step 3.) Recruiting is a very important stage, be sure to recruit people that you think are mature enough and loyal enough to work for your guild. Hiring people that use L337 speech or act immature will probably give you a few headaches in the future. Some people have problems with recruiting, that's why it's wise to advertise on forums and have your current members spread the word.

Step 4.) You will need a way to KEEP your recruits. They need something to do and they need a reason to stay. It's wise to give payment or hire those who work hard enough and grant them benefits. Now, since bob is making a Miners guild, he will need a way to promote his employees. First, he needs a system. Let's say bob tells his miners to go mine underground for minerals, They go down and mine up some minerals and bring it back to their base. You can make some sort of reward to those who bring back valuable materials. It's wise to make the reward more valuable than the mineral itself or they will likely walk off with the mineral in their pocket. Now once Bob has massed in minerals, he can start trading.

Step 5.) If you are running a business, then it's wise to start finding people that will buy and sell your items. You can hire people to sell items on the street, or sell them yourself to a local shop. You need an income if you are going to pay off your recruits/employees. This will keep them motivated to work harder.

Step 6.) A defense will be needed in case of attackers. Hiring someone to protect your land is just as smart as knowing how to keep it organized. If you have people running in and out stealing, then you will not go anywhere. Be sure to protect what you earn.

Now let's say bob got a bit greedy and he wanted to make his guild more evil. Let's say a bandit camp. IF YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE AN EVIL GUILD BE SURE YOUR MEMBERS ALL HAVE A VILLAIN APPLICATION! If you have members without an evil app then you will have problems in the future. Villainous guilds are harder to run due to the fact you will have a lot more people breaking down your door and giving you trouble. This is how you can avoid this...

Step 1.) MAKE STRICT RULES! You need strict rules to keep your members from giving your guild that bad of a name that the town guard will come and tear your order to pieces. MAKE IT CLEAR that those who join this organization/guild need to be responsible for their actions. They CANNOT go around telling everyone about your plans. This is where my next point comes in...

Step 2.) Recruit smart! With a darker guild, recruitment must be strict, It's smart to know who this person is you are recruiting, and how mature and committed they are to aiding your guild. If you have a spy in your guild, you WILL have trouble. Do your best to keep them out. Also, RECRUIT SECRETLY! You cannot tell everyone "HEY! wanna join da bad boyz?! we are like right over there on the hill! Just go there to sign up! we haz cookies!" No... Just, no. Never recruit openly. That will be a quick downfall...

Step 3.) Try resisting over aggression. If you cause too much trouble without being prepared for retaliation, then expect hell to come your way. You shouldn't attack a city if you are not prepared. If you have low numbers, keep your jobs quiet. A smart guild is a strong guild.

Hopefully this helps and people learn from this correctly. Thank you for reading and please comment, rate and vote at the poll! If there is something I should add just tell me ^_^

+1! Awesome guide. Some new players really feel isolated and confused by the complexity of the RP on this server. It's nice for there to be a crash course on it!

Also dont forget you can use /setname to do more complex emotes, for example;

*pulls her hair from out of her face.

Freya pulls her hair from out of her face.

/setname It

*flutters in the breeze, back into her face.

It flutters in the breeze, back into her face.

Through the use of Strategic name changing, you can do some seriously complex emotes!

+1. I find a good point in this guide, too many people are afraid of losing a fight. Losing is fun, it means you can come back and kick ass next time! ;)

And I'm so going to use /setname for emotes! I had no idea you could do that.
