Disappointment

"Perhaps one of the greatest lessons I learned through experience was that nothing ever goes exactly as you want it. Every aspect of my life thus far I've planned as a child. And I'm way off course."

-Nafis 2nd of the Amber Cold, 1531.

“You grew up to be a beeg monster slayer, yees?” The decrepit Qali looked hopefully to the armored man knelt before his bed side. The former’s eyes widened and immediately a loud wheeze escaped the wrinkled vessel. He brought his free hand balled into a fist over his mouth and broke into a coughing fit.

The armored man’s grip on the old man’s other hand tightened. His voice was muffled by the metal mask donned.

“Na’am. I did, Uncle Siris.” He said, in a forced cheerful tone, giving a short nod. He grasped the side of his mask and pulled it off, setting it down on the floor.

Uncle Siris reached a hand out to run his index finger along the scar that ran across the youthful Qali’s face. A faint frown laid upon Uncle Siris’ face as he noted the missing eye.  “Arleen told me of your company. You’ve grown to be beeg and strong, you fight for what’s right.” The old man nodded to himself reassuringly, his frown becoming that of a smile as he brought his hand away from Nafis’ face. “So, you are a beeg monster slayer now.”

Uncle to the Caliph, revered as ‘Uncle’ to all. It has been near two decades since Nafis laid eyes upon the decrepit Qali. Thought dead, tears of joy flowed down the cheeks of the young Qali’s face. Siris explained his daring escape from Athera on his own when left behind by the realm’s mortals.

“...I gathered dates and bread into my raft and allowed se currents to take Uncle Sirees. It was Allah’s weel I was reunited with you all, yees.”

With the attentive listening of a child listening to a grandfather’s bedtime story, Nafis rarely peeped as he heard Uncle Siris’ tale of adventure and survival. Afterwards, they spoke together and laughed about the old days in Al-Dirahk. They reminisced about long lost faces and discussed of who remained from those beautiful days.

“Do you remember the ‘girl in the hijab’? We reunited. And got married just a few years ago.” Nafis’ cheeks turned red as Uncle Siris teased him and he turned away.

“Hahaha…-” Uncle Siris’ face wrinkled up as he wheezed from the hard chuckle. “Ahh...You were a good boy, Nafees. You listened to Uncle Sirees’ advice and in the end you got the *****. You got the ***** and that means you’ll get to pass on Uncle Sirees’ lessons on to your children and live a happy life.”

“Heh, maybe my rafiqi.”

Despite the heartwarming reunion, there was a purpose for Uncle Siris’ return. It may have been divine intervention from GOD himself. And that was to find the missing Emiress Ceto Kharadeen - his beloved niece. Nafis swore to aid his beloved mentor on his quest.

Uncle Siris died a week after his reunion with Nafis. Explosions set off caused the old Qali’s heart to give out. Caught up in his company's work, the self proclaimed 'Vandalore' did not have time to help Siris. Nafis later discovered Uncle Siris was able to find Ceto, but she left him to die upon the ground where he fell.

Nafis donned the mask again after receiving the news. It wasn’t out of paranoia or fear this time. He wanted to hide the heart breaking disappointment etched into his face from his comrades. It had been accumulating overtime since he first got to Vailor. Uncle Siris' last words still clung to Nafis' thoughts.

"Shokran for your kindness, Nafees. You were always a good boy and now, you're a good man. Be happy."
