Goodbye, Gustav, and just a day before your term.

The portly mayor, unaware of the discontent stirring in private homes and shaded ways, shuffles about the new tax office with his large back exposed to the door.

And then the door slowly creaks open.

A shuffling of feet.

Gustav wheels around at the sudden sound invading his property, and gives the aggressors a taste of his opinion.

The huge man is surprisingly agile for his girth, and the struggle begins. The mayor jiggles to and fro as he feints, fakes; makes sly farces before worming past his two enemies. He runs out the door and cries for help.

But no one came.

His predators follow.

They chase him with shining blades, but the well-fed mayor retains a certain swiftness.

They exchange blows, parries; feints until a well timed thrust pierces the mayor's soft back.

He goes down. Crimson shines in the threads of sunlight shooting past the high housetops.

"I've got his ankles."

The killers walk northwards with a sack wrapped in steel chains between them. Awfully heavy.

"On three."

A deep splash in the water's surface. The ocean jets up as if to flee the sin deposited.

An family friend walks up, well-meaning.

It's quiet, now, and a bitter envy has left the teeth of its wielders.

"The ol' rusty coin, aye."
