Great men are borne and forged in the inferno. Lesser men bear the unfortunate privilege of feeding that very fire.

—  Sʏʟᴠᴇsᴛʀᴇ Hᴀʟᴄᴏᴜʀᴛ I ᴏғ Aʟᴅᴇʀsʙᴜʀɢ, ᴄɪʀᴄᴀ 1473

House Halcourt is a family which traces its heritage back centuries. It has almost always been known for its military service: for example, Cecil Halcourt I lead the Petrus Watch under the commission of Emperor Tuvya circa 1475. Most recently, Sylvestre Halcourt II has made a name for himself as an officer of Legio I Ioannes and prominent burgher.

Foundation of Vasile | circa 753 anno domini
Vasile, the once capital of the long dead Principality of Relouria, was founded by the progenitor of the Halcourt line: Philip Halcourt I. As a result of this, the main line of Halcourt is fully known as Halcourt de Vasile.

The Cadet’s War | 1,397 anno domini
Following the tanist election (wherein the vassals of the realm elected from amongst the children of the former Prince his heir), at the feast where the new Prince was to be announced, the chancellor of Relouria was shot and killed. A cadet branch of Halcourt attempted to steal the throne.

Fall of the Principality | 1,436 anno domini
Following years of chaos, the Principality was in ruins and fell to foreign aggressors. The remainder of House Halcourt and its servants, including the former Prince’s heirs, fled the country. They were Sylvestre Halcourt I, Cecil Halcourt I, and Eliza Halcourt. They landed in the duchy of Savoy, and promptly swore to the then Duke Olivier de Savoie. Meanwhile, Relouria was lost, as was Athera, soon thereafter.

Orenian Assimilation | 1,450 anno domini
By the mid fifteenth century, the Relourian population was mostly integrated into Orenian society, especially being focused in the Savoyard region. The Halcourts proved leal servants of Ashford, particularly de Savoie, in this era.

Coup de Grace | circa 1,480 anno domini
In time, Halcourt became somewhat of an obscure name. They no longer were as well known in Savoy as they once were, and as their former lieges fell from power at the hands of House Horen, their obsolescence became even more grounded.

Relouria Returns | 1,550 anno domini
Around 1530, a 3rd generation of Halcourts rose to prominence once more, earning rank and renown in the Orenian crownlands. This has continued unto the modern day, and the Halcourts have earned somewhat of a name for themselves once more, primarily through their hallmark military service.

All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope...

Heirlooms

It is impossible to escape the impression that people commonly use false standards of measurement — that they seek power, success and wealth for themselves and admire them in others, and that they underestimate what is of true value in life.

Tradition is not the worship of ashes; rather, it is the preservation of fire.

The city was a combination of Savoyard and Relourian architectural styles. »

Agnatic cognatic elective inheritance
When the patriarch of House Halcourt passes, his possessions and property are held in trust until his heir is elected. All of his children will vote upon another of their siblings; the one with the most vote inherits. There is no gender preference. If there are no children of the direct line, siblings of the former patriarch are preferred, and further, cousins then their legal issue, as many generations apart as need be.

Savoyard-Relourian culture
House Halcourt is a Relourian family, which traces its heritage back to the founding of that now defunct Principality. However, upon immigration to Oren, the Halcourts assimilated into the duchy of Savoy and as a result, they have adopted some Savoyard traditions. For example, cadet branches are stylized in the Savoyard fashion. ie: Halcourt de Vasile is the primary branch, while Halcourt de Pierrot is the cadet branch.

Military heritage
The Halcourts have always been known for their battle prowess. From Cecil I, the once commander of the Petrus Watch, to Sylvestre Halcourt II, currently an officer in the emperor’s legions, they have shown their ability as leaders of men on the field of battle time and time again.
