On the Second Tenet: Spreading the Flame

Passage taken from Brother Hjarn’s volume translating the Red Scrolls from old nordic to common.

Book of the Justicar: Verse 2 “My children, the long dark presses. Ye of the flickering flame, stand aflame ere all returns to blackness. In your hearts hold righteous fury, for wroth is the bonfire of the soul. I beseech thee, go forth and spread my flame unto the hearts and souls of the blind.”

The Second tenet of the Book of the Justicar is one of the most integral tenets to the daily life of the children of Father. The verse involves several different sections each with unique implications regarding the practice of the faith. The first section of the verse calls for us to “stand aflame ere all returns to blackness”. This section calls for the children to proudly and openly their faith as the call to “stand aflame” is to stand openly and visibly. Furthermore to be ‘of the flickering flame’ references the insignia of the All Father, that of the flickering flame. Therefore the opening passage demands that those of the Red Faith are open with their status as Children of the Father. The final portion of this passage discusses ‘blackness’ in this context we can assume that blackness refers to the Long Dark. From this the passage can be interpreted to command the Father’s children to openly display their faith in order to stave off the forces of decay and stagnation.

The second portion of the verse reads as follows “In your hearts hold righteous fury, for wroth is the bonfire of the soul.” From this passage the militaristic nature of the faith can be found. With the passage calling us to hold righteous fury, to channel our rage and faith into the pursuit of the great cause and the service of the All Father. Finally the most significant portion of the verse from which we draw the diluted version of the second tenet. The Father calls us to spread his flame to the hearts and souls of the blind. The blind being those lacking the faith of the All Father which in this context is referred to as his ‘flame’.

This passage has a second meaning for those of the Holy Hearth. Namely it serves as the basis upon which the clergy operates. Those of the Holy Hearth dedicate their lives to the defence and nourishment of the Father’s flame. This is achieved through the construction of Hearth Temples and the conversion of the blind. To those few of us that bear the Flamebrand and holy tomes of the Father we must take this passage to heart and bear our righteous fury in opposition to the Long Dark as we pursue our holiest charge.
