thesmellypocket 1859 Share Posted June 30, 2019 The Judite Rite (Missa Cantata) -The Asperges and Kyrie, together with the opening and closing hymns are chanted by the monks, priest and congregation. -The Asperges and final blessing are in Flexio, and the ‘Kyrie’ in Akritian. The closing hymn may optionally be in Flexio. Apart from that, the Rite is in Common. -This missal will be laid out at the front of the cathedral, that people may pick it up. -Celebrated by a priest, assisted by a Deacon or server. The Judite Brothers usually enter with a short vernacular hymn (This is variable); all stand. The hymn of the day shall be added to the Missal. Invocation of Saint Jude (Kneel) Priest: Holy Father, Saint Jude… Reply: Pray for us. Priest: Defender of the Church… Reply: Pray for us. Priest: Jude, chaste, charitable and most just… Reply: pray for us. Kyrie (Kneel) The phrase ‘Kyrie Eleison’ (Lord have mercy) is invoked 3 times and sung by the church in Chant. While it is sung, the priest incensing the altar, before handing the incense to the Deacon OR another server, who incenses the congregation. Scrolls (Stand) The Scrolls are brought out by the Deacon or server, which he kisses and holds in front of him. Taking them to the side of the Altar, the priest incenses the Scrolls, before starting: ‘A reading from the Scroll of [name] of the Prophet [name]’ Reply: Glory to Thee, O Lord! The priest then reads a short excerpt from the Scroll. When the book is closed, everyone says: ‘Thanks to be God.’ Sermon (Sit) The priest gives a sermon. Judite sermons tend to be learned, fervent,well-structured, sharp and to the point. The Sprinkling Rite (Stand, then Kneel) The Asperges is the climax of the Mass. It is the sprinkling of the altar, monks and congregation with Holy Water, considered an incredibly blessed act by the Judites. The Deacon/server kneels and hands the sponge to the priest, who kisses it and takes it. The priest then fills a small, ornate bowl with Holy Water, at which a bell is rung, and all KNEEL. As the priest stands, he intones the hymn ‘Asperges me’ and comes out to spray the people with holy water. (* indicates the point where everyone sings with the priest, with the priest intoning each part.) Sometimes, the hymn ‘Vidi Aquam’ can be sung instead, in which case it will replace the Asperges Me in this missal. Asperges me * Domine, hyssopo et mundabor. Lavabis me, et super nivem dealbabor. (Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, Lord, and I will be cleansed. Thou shalt cleanse me, and I shall be made whiter than snow.) Miserere mei Deus*, secundum magnam misericordiam tuam. (Have mercy on me, O God, according to thy great mercy.) Gloria Patri et Horeno, et Omnibus Sanctis!* Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula saeculorum. Amen. (Glory to the Father, and to Horen, and to all the Saints! As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.) Asperges me…(Repeated once) Dismissal (Stand) Priest: Go in peace. Reply: Thanks be to God. (Making the sign of the Cross) Priest: Benedicat vos omnipotens Deus: Pater, et Horenus, et Exaltus Honorem. (Crossing themselves) Reply: Amen. There is a closing hymn, in Flexio or the vernacular, as the priest, Deacon and monks leave. Again, it will be put here for the Mass.

thesmellypocket 1859 Author Share Posted July 1, 2019 Appendix I: VIDI AQUAM, alternative hymn to the Asperges: *Meaning up to that point is where the priest intones, after that everyone else joins in. ‘Vidi aquam* egredientem de templo, a latere dextro, alleluia: Et omnes ad quos pervenit aqua ista, salvi facti sunt, Et dicent: alleluia, alleluia! Confitemini Domino* quoniam bonus, quoniam in saeculum misericordia eius. Gloria Patri, et Horeno et Omnibus Sanctis!* Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.’ Translation: ’I saw water flowing from the right side of the temple, alleluia: And all who went to this water were saved, And they shall say: alleluia, alleluia! Give praise to the Lord, for He is good; for his mercy endureth forever. Glory to the Father, and to Horen, and to all the Saints! As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be – world without end. Amen.’
