The Pontifical Office: Compline.

FOR USE IN SEMINARIES, MONASTERIES, CHURCHES AND HOMES.

Translated, Written and Collected by Father Humbert, O.S.J. Published Posthumously by Philip Pius Coppinger.

 

Compline is the final hour of prayer proscribed by the great Monastics. It is the last hour before the great silence in Judite monasteries, and is prayed in late evening. 

 

`It was very frustrating to me that no permanent prayer rule had survived in order that we Judites might pray the Liturgy of the Hours.Therefore, the task has fallen on me, God’s unworthy Slave, to do something. This was written for the Judites, but can also be used by nuns, priests and laymen. The Hours should especially be prayed in seminaries. It can be prayed alone or together, or sung in Chant. I have left my settings of the Chants so that people may use them. Thy humble Slave in God,

C  (All crossing themselves): Adjutorium nostrum in nomine Domini. [Our help is in the name of the Lord.]

 

R : Qui fecit caelum et terram. [Who made heaven and earth.]

 

C : Gloria Patri, et Horeno, et Omnibus Sanctis! [Glory be to the Father, and to Horen, and to all the Saints!]

Antiphon: Domine, exaudi orationem meam! Et clamor meus ad te veniat. [Lord, hear my prayer. And come to my call.]

 

 

C : De profundis clamavi ad te, Domine; Domine, exaudi vocem meam. [Out of the depths I have cried to thee, O Lord: Lord hear my voice.]

 

R : Fiant aures tuae intendentes in vocem deprecationis meae. [Let thy ears be mindful of the voice of my supplication.]

 

C : Si iniquitates observaveris, Domine, Domine, quis sustinebit? [If thou, O Lord, will mark iniquities, who shall stand it?]

 

R : Quia apud te propitiatio est; et propter legem tuam sustinui te, Domine. [For with thee there is merciful forgiveness: and by reason of thy law, I have waited for thee, Lord.]

 

C : Sustinuit anima mea in verbo ejus; speravit anima mea in Domino. [My soul hath relied on his word; my soul hath hoped in the Lord.]

 

R : A custodia matutina usque ad noctem, speret Orenia in Domino; [From the morning watch even unto night, let Oren hope in the Lord.]

 

C : Quia apud Dominum misericordia, et copiosa apud eum redemptio. [Because with the Lord there is mercy, and copious redemption.]

Kyrie

The ‘Kyrie Eleison’ is the Church’s plea for mercy on behalf of the entire world. It is not usually considered a Psalm, lacking an antiphon and being only two words.

[Almighty and everlasting God, by whose spirit the whole body of the Church is sanctified and governed, hear our prayers for all the orders therein; that, by the gift of thy grace, all in their several degrees may serve thee faithfully.]
