The Eternal Crusade

Spoiler

‘No longer’ Godric thought to himself, his visage cold, harsh weather and the demands of war bringing hints of grey to his young features despite having seen barely twenty five winters. He walked briskly from the palace, shrouded in silence amidst the night of falling snow. In his hand, a beacon blazed. A torch, filled to the brim with ashen sap its brilliance blinded those who would not shield their eyes. So forward Godric marched, down from the palace stairs, more and more men of the great cliffed city falling into line behind him as he’d slowly proceed towards the flaming tree set in the middle of the city. Turning he’d face the gathered crowd, each woken by whispers and shakes. Rising wearily from their bed by the hearth tender of each home. The Duke was about in the middle of the night, surely there was business afoot.

Silhouetted by the Ash tree’s glow the young Duke turned to address the folk of Morsgrad. “To every man, death cometh soon or late” he’d say, his voice barely audible above the crackling flames, a shadow of a whisper. “We have but one life” he’d snarl the famous passion of his ancient bloodline rising within him “And to each of us falls the divine imperative, it is not enough that we merely exist, nor is it sufficient for us to avoid sin in ourselves alone. No. There is a greater sin, a sin committed ignorantly by far too many of us.” he’d exclaim, his eyes afire as he’d fall silent for but a moment “Tolerance”, the word would hang in the air, spat as if a cursed word, a word clad in filth and all the foulness of the world “There is no greater sin than tolerance, for he who tolerates sin, abets it ENDORSES IT. If we are to obey the divine. We can no longer tolerate sin in any capacity” with this Godric would fall silent, once more the shroud of silence would fall on the gathered, interrupted only by the elegant dancing of the falling snow.

With a fierce coldness to his voice Godric would croak, as if he’d not spoken for an eon “On this year, the seventeenth hundred and thirty seventh by the reckoning of man, I Godric, Duke of Morsgrad, do invoke my holy lineage to declare crusade. Eternal crusade. We shall wage war upon the witch, upon the sinner, upon the demon. No stone shall be left unturned, no coven shall escape the fires of wrath, no foul wytch or sorcerer shall escape the pyre.” With that he departed from the square, leaving the townfolk alone to the silence, to their thoughts, to the snow.
