Reflections on Fatherism : First Treatise

The Theology of the Ruric

Spoiler

The Fatherist has always believed in the divinely inspired nature of Thoromir. Our first and most venerable Prophet, and the patriarch of the entirety of the modern Rurikid. The Father selected him to enlighten the races of man to the Father’s truth. It is to him that the holy essence was first granted and from that original essence that all Flamebrands and Hearths descend. The Father charging him to be a beacon of his revealed truth, and to shield the faithful, with his own flesh if necessary. In that sense there is no single mortal more venerated and holy in the entirety of the Fatherist pantheon of ancestors. For Thoromir, selected by the Father dwells at his right hand in the firmament. But I shall speak more on the particularities of the firmament at a later date.

As a result of his divine inspiration and blessing the issue of Thoromir are, in the eyes of Fatherists conferred the divine right to rule. Their patriarch chosen directly by the essence of justice and truth, our saviour from the ravenous maw of the abyss. Thus the Prophet’s bloodline remains revered and esteemed, despite the numerous conflicts that occured within. The methods of selecting the most appropriate heir of the first Prophet vary depending on the moment of history. In the earliest days the eldest son of the previous heir took up the mantle upon the expiration of his father. The Father having chosen a male, thus the charge of ruling and defending the Fatherist peoples must fall in turn a male descendant of the first Prophet.

Then came the turbulent times wherein the law of eldest was discarded. In the wake of the death of Edvard, the line of Eiriksson rose to power. Thus came the lengthy period of internal conflict, apostasy and heresy as the various branches of the family struggled for control. With the offences against the divine culminating during the rule of Javier and his son Jevan. This branch of the Eirikssons renouncing the Father and declaring the Fatherist realm a godless secular one. No longer able to tolerate this apostasy High Keeper Arthas ashed Jevan then introduced the Rurikmoot. An undesirable institution but one superior to the bloodshed that had preceded. Under the Rurikmoot each Rurikid male could call a Rurikmoot a single time in their lifetime to challenge the incumbent monarch. At which point, depending on the era all of the Rurics or all of the Clanned Chieftains would cast a vote on who should succeed as the next defender of the Fatherist people.

This tradition continued until the fall of Ruriksgrad, being briefly replaced with the law of eldest under Thoromir II’s Nordengrad. However with his untimely death and the return of Eiriksson rule the Nordish peoples were soon at war once more with the Empire. Following the sacking of Nordengrad moots were briefly reinstituted at Dunharrow, spawning two bloody coup attempts upon failure before the practice of moots was entirely removed. Its extinction mirroring that of the Alvarsson line of Frey. Thus in the days of Morsgrad we have returned to the Eldest law. Yet with the return of the Eldest law we have arrived at a peculiar conundrum. My eldest son Edmund, whilst loyal to the Fatherist realm is a canonist. Therefore he is not a Ruric and cannot to that end succeed me.

To be a Ruric requires two things. First, one must be able to patrilineally trace their descendance directly from Thoromir I. Secondly one must be a practicing Fatherist. Why? As stated previously the Fatherist throne is the seat of Thoromir. In that sense any who would properly grace it must be a legitimate heir of Thoromir I. One must be a male of his direct bloodline. And one must be able to properly hold the faith of the divine Father and of the people by upholding and promoting the Fatherist values of our faith. While simultaneously serving as the shield of the people and the hearth from the heathen and the demonic forces that seek to extinguish our proud fire.

In that sense it is not sufficient merely to be able to claim the blood of the Prophet. One must also uphold his divine revelations if they are to be held as a legitimate descendant of the Prophet. This applying not merely to those who would succeed the throne but for all who would bear the mantle of ‘Ruric’. To be a Ruric is to be a beacon and a bulwark to the Fatherist people. Their holy presence rendering them as minor shrines and objects of veneration depending on the piety of the Ruric. For the most pious it is not uncommon to include a lock of Ruric hair or another such memoir in the local family shrine. This heavy birthright is the duty of all born and raised as Ruric. Those who fail to adhere to this demand, to be a beacon of faith and a shield of the faithful are ashed. Forevermore stripped of the name Ruric. Those who have failed to uphold their sacred duty as a shield. A charge first lain upon Thoromir I are not only stripped of their name but forevermore banished from the reach.
