Mi the Wandering Tree

Forest Dwedmar Folklore

The Story of Mi the Wandering Tree is not about a tree at all. His nickname just originated out of the fact that his green skin and fur made him look like a tree to those that spot him in the forest. One should not take Mi’s name at face value, as his story is one of punishment and regret.

Mi was believed to  be borned a dwarf, a mountain dwarf in fact. His name was Mirak and his clan was lost to time. Mirak was a devout worshiper of Grimdugan and tried to dedicate his life to mirroring the Brathmordakin of shadows and cunning. Through his life as a trickster Mirak gained a lot of wealth by tricking humans and other races. However, his life eventually became dry. He felt that he needed to do something greater, something that would really make Grimdugan bid on him in the after life. To this end Mirak decided that he was going to steal Grimdugan’s Obsidian Dagger and prove his worth to the Brathmordakin in that way.

Mirak was able to after many find the trunk of the cosmic world tree that connects the mortal planes to the other realms. He was able to reach Kaz’A’Dentrumm where he was able to trick the Legionaries that were guarding Dungrimm’s great hall. Once inside Mirak attended the daily bidding of the souls which was the only moment when he would have been able to get to Grimdugan. He tried to hide in such a way that he would be able to crawl to get the Obsidian Dagger from its sheath, however, once he touched the dagger Grimdugan saw him.

The Brathmordakin was furious at the dwarf. He let him know that he was aware of what he was doing from the beginning as he knows all that goes on in the shadows. The only reason that he had not stopped the dwarf was to see if  the mortal’s hubris was really big enough to try to steal from a Brathmordakin. With this Grimdugan tapped the dwarf on the head. He said that if he was unable to show respect to his patron then he was not worthy to be a dwarf. Once this was said Mirak’ skin and hair started to become green and his mouth started to grow tusks. Before his transformation was completed he was cast out by Dungrimm from his hall back to the mortal planes.

When the transformation was complete Mirak realised he was turned into a forest Troll, being unable to walk around unnoticed and no cunning. Saddened by his fate he tried to take his life in the form of a sacrifice in such a way that he could at least be worthy of the afterlife. However, before he could finish the ritual Anbella appeared before him. She told him that as the Brathmordakin of justice she cannot reverse his curse as it was deserved, however, as the Brathmordakin of mercy she could not let such a talented dwarf waste away in such a way. Because of this Anbella granted Mirak an intelligence above any other troll and a legendary skill in alchemy. She told him to learn her craft and that maybe one day when he masters it he will be able to turn his life around. Mirak now called Mi after his transformation as his memory became impared spent all moments of the day working on his chemistry, however nothing worked. To this day it is said that Mi is still trying to brew something to give him back his dwarf form. It is believed that Mi takes dwarves from time to time to help him with his experiments, be it to use  them as guinea pigs or to have them complete a task for him.
