HUNGRY

Many years ago lived a boy, not too young, yet not too old: he was deemed an adult. He lived in a large manor somewhere in the country of some distant kingdom, and there his life was easy. He had a family, a loving one at that; a mother, father and six siblings. Every day he would play and eat then sleep and repeat over and over again.

All the while his family lived in such luxury, there was a war raging. This war rendered thousands starving, unable to find even the slight bit of nourishment. One cannot blame the boy and his family for the privilege they were afforded, however this courtesy does not extend in all circumstances…

One day, the boy went out into the forest, a bag of bread and sweets by his side as he ventured to cure his boredom. The usually safe forests however, carried a different air; the quiet murmurs and growls from the distance that soon approached. Soon, two young boys, younger than himself had approached him; they were sickly, pale and boney. “Food, sir” The asked gently. The boy simply looked at them with a bemused smirk across his face.

“Please, we’ve not fed in weeks..” They’d ask again weakly.

“Well, perhaps if your fathers worked ******* harder the war would be won and your pathetic little stomachs would be fed!” He’d scoff back, proud of himself for the rebuttal. The starving children said nothing, their eyes and faces weak; they turned and left into the now departed sun, and too the cruel boy returned home - that night he stuffed his face with so much bread, sweets, cakes, desserts. Fattening himself up for the day to come.

Again, he woke; he ate, dressed, ate and then left the castle once more and ventured into the forest. He found berries to fling at his sisters back at home, sticks and twigs to have the carpenters make toys of, but…

“We only wanted bread”

That night, when the two starving children returned home to their little hovels, they ate well. Their mother smiled as she stirred the thick stew, pouring the chunky bits and liquids into the bowls of her family; her husband, and her seven children.

“Eat up” She’d say happily, as, for the first time in weeks her family would enjoy the childish delights of a full meal.
