COLOURS

Within Daelish culture, colours upon our tartans hold a symbolic nature over our dress. Below is the list of our most commonly worn tartan colours and the symbolism affiliated to each.

GREEN

Signifies those who come from nearby forests or prairies, a dominant colour in nature, those who utilise the colour green within their tartan are heavily involved in the outdoors, in activities such as hunting, fishing, farming and foraging.

BLUE

Blue represents those who herald from nearby lochs and rivers. It is associated with wisdom, protection and loyalty. The rarest colour to appear on tartan, as it is reserved primarily for clans of nobility.

RED

Worn in battle so that blood does not show, red symbolises the bold and the brave, those with courage and strength. One of the most common tartan colours to be worn, as every Daelish man is one of battle and defence of his clan and people.

BLACK

The colour of darkness, black is assertive and authoritative. It is adorned by clans who have a more political role within Daeland.

YELLOW

Yellow is the least common colour to be worn as it symbolises a religious dedication and focus within a clan. It also indicates a devotion to a higher philosophical understanding.

MEN

KILTS

A kilt is a type of knee-length garment worn by men as a major element of the traditional garb as well as a moniker of their clan ties. The kilt is a length of woven wool that is permanently pleated, aside for sections at each end, and wrapped around the wearer's waist in such a way that the pleats are massed at the wearer's back, while the flat unpleated ends overlap to form a double layer upon the front.

TREWS

Trews, also known as "truis" or "triubhas", are men's clothing for the legs, a traditional form of tartan trousers from conventional Daeland dress. Trews can be trimmed with leather, usually buckskin, especially on the inner leg to prevent wear from riding on horseback.

FULL PLAID

A full plaid is a long piece of tartan, typically only seen on members of pipe bands or upon nobility during formal events. It is wrapped around the wearer's chest and under right arm, pulled firm to the body. The plaid is twisted on the left shoulder with one loose end falling behind the wearer's back. The front face of the plaid is usually secured by a brooch or clan badge, worn upon the left shoulder.

BELTED PLAID

The belted plaid is a large blanket-like piece of fabric which is wrapped around the body with the material pleated or, more accurately, loosely gathered and secured at the waist by means of a belt. Traditionally, a portion of the belted plaid hangs down to the knees (for men) or ankles (for women).

SPORRAN

Since the traditional kilt does not have pockets, a sporran is a pouch that performs that same function. Made of leather or fur, the sporran is chosen to complement the formality of the dress worn with is. It is worn on a leather strap and conventionally positioned in front of the groin of the wearer.

WOMEN

TARTAN SKIRTS

A tartan skirt is for women wanting to wear a kilt like their male equivalents but find themselves wanting something more feminine and flattering. This long plaid skirt falls to the ankles. Much like the kilt, these are a length of woven wool, pleated in the behind, though these folds are loose in comparison.

EARASAIDS

An earasaid is a draped garment and a traditional part of female Daeland dress. Essentially, the women's version of the great kilt. Earasaids might be plain, striped or tartan, brightly coloured with that of a clan or made of lachdan (undyed wool).

SASHES

A sash is a large and usually colourful ribbon or band of  tartan worn around the body. They are typically adorned by those of nobility and reserved for formal affairs, while rarer amongst the common folk. Sashes come in a variety of colours and similarly to tartan, the colour holds important significance. It is usually held in place by a clan badge or brooch.
