A Sleepless Knight

In the first twilight hours of the coming day, when the Imperial City had long since entered it's slumber and the memories of the waning day before were laid to rest along with the heads that carried them, all was peaceful in the air and on the wind. Harsh winter frost had given way, and though a chill cascaded down from the inky sky to rest upon the city, it was clear that warm spring nights were soon to come, bringing with them life and the noise of crickets chirping on such clear nights. But this night, there was no sound in the estate district save for the gentle whipping and whistling of the wind.

Within one estate, where mother and newborn son lay sound asleep in a pair of strong, battle-hardened arms, a single candle was lit in a far removed room, casting a gentle yellow glow across the bunk. There, with the door having remained shut for at least the past three hours, a muscular torso, adorned with a series of scars across its surface, sat leaned against the wall in a cot. A sheathed ferrum short sword lay across the man's lap, it's hilt gripped firmly in his left hand. His right hand sat close to his chest, to which his chin was nearly pinned. Rolling over in his fingers was a plain golden ring, secured to a leather band which hung around his neck. For several minutes he sat in silence like this, before finally opening his eyes to look down at the ring. In the candlelight, an engraving could faintly be made out on the inside of the band:

Adelina

((If there's any interest, I'll make a part two.))
