Ramblings from the tattered Pages of Gulroid’s Journal:

Opening Page:

‘Tis a sad fact of life that not every dwarf gets along with his elders. I know that Farunt, who sired me, was once a compassionate dwarf who served the nation and the King well in many battles and managed to attain fame for the Duril family. But his beard is now old and notted, and his eyes are grey and mournful. He sits by a roarin’ fire staring into ‘dose flames when he is not doing his duties as a baron. His eyes lose focus and his ale grows warm clenched in his calloused fingers. S’been like dat since me brother , Dorgril, passed. Took an arrow to de neck in an ambush many years ago. Could’ve been worse I suppose. But no dwarf wants the dishonor of being killed from afar. He would prefer to die axe drawn, fighting to the bitter end. But I guess we don decide how we die in de end. His bones be encased in stone along with out ancestors. I couldn’ lift an axe when he died, but I remember the tears hitting the cold stone floor when we got word. Farunt spent three sun rises carving out the stone which Dorgril was to be placed inHis death hit de family hard. Me mother eventually recovered but Farunt, it would be a stretch to call him father, never was the same. He’d poured his years after retiring from active military service in the Legion into amassing money to provide Dorgril with the best of everything. Farunt had big plans for him. But never for me. I was the runt. I never excelled as ‘father’ had wanted me to. Dorgril was always the brightest and best. He could swing his axe harder, memorize the maze of tunnels faster, and had a way with words that be uncommon in dwarves. Since den the family has stuck with me to fill my brother’s shoes. I never could. I never will.
