The Crystal Expedition - Field Log #1

[This forum post represents an in-game book. I encourage people to find the tome in role play to say that they have read it. I do not own any art.]

Considering all that has happened on this venture, I find it best to ease my thoughts by recording what I have witnessed into text so that all may know of what transpired once I publish my findings of this most fascinating subject. For the sake of privacy- the names of my companions have been omitted from this first of hopefully many records, less those who would deem this ‘heresy’ of the vile and most radical of ignorant whelps shall not have harm befall them.

 

The First Phase: Encounter

 

Having been informed that we would be studying a strange crystal, my companions and I ventured into the deep forest to locate the construct. It was mesmerizing to behold; a crystal made not of any identifiable gemstones upon our plane- I had rightfully guessed that it came crashing to our world from the Great Beyond- that place known as the Void where other things dwell. This can be confirmed, for within the treetops the branches look broken and in the sky appeared to be a faint ripple- akin to a sewn shut hole barely noticeable to the eye. (It is thankful that the eyes of elves are keener than that of men, no?).

We had learned that this stone was sent to our plain as some object to allow whatever had sent it to learn of our world- for the sake of privacy, I will occlude how this was found out- though I mus hazard some spell of the voidal arts if I was to guess; my knowledge on the exact method is sadly not within my grasp of understanding. Nevertheless- such a notion piqued my interest. I know little in truth of what lurks beyond the Veil- save that it is home to thinking things that brew themselves from the very liquid essence of space, time, and all the things inbetween. I believe that the object is some form of communicator- a beacon of sorts to allow the creature past it to see and hear what happens before it. This… is somewhat accurate.

 

The Second Phase: Awakening

 

We woke up the crystal via our magister that had come with us connecting to the Void. Immediately once that other realm connection was made, the crystal responded to it- beginning to quest out towards our wizard, all the while it spoke utter nonsensical sounds in a language I can only assume to be what is known as Moon Speech, that alien tongue used by those Other Things. Thus my first assumption was proven right (as it naturally is of course, for my genius is supreme).

 

The crystal then seemed to touch our magister through bands of glowing mystical light. Referencing the many texts about voidal magic within the Eternal Library- I have best estimated that what the crystal had done is a spell known as Voidal Feeling to gain some form of understanding of us, or rather some form of that spell that may be more complex then what is normally preformed. After it had taken on the task of feeling our magister- its language soon turned from gibberish nonsense to fluent elvish, and even words of the common tongue! I find myself impressed by such rapid learning ability in such a short manner of time- which makes me posit a theory that time does not exist as we understand it within the Void. Perhaps time moves both faster and slower at the same time, which allowed the entity that we spoke to to rapidly understand our language in such a fast pace of time compared from our point of view (though if this is valid I have yet to confirm).

 

During our conversation, the crystal began to ‘voidally feel’ the surrounding dirt, stones, plants, and even wildlife. Turning them into their base components as it seemed intent on discovering the world around us. That is when the leader of our group posed to the crystal a question which I had come up with- we asked the crystal if it would part with a piece of it, so that we may bring it back to our lab and study it. 

 

It agreed, on the condition we gave it a piece of ourselves. Our leader, no doubt proud of his own abilities, accepted the terms- and the entity began to try and take his hand- or what we thought was just a hand soon turned to half an arm, to his full arm, to the entire right side of his body. Panicked by this, our leader told us to break the crystal and ‘kill it’. An understandable but in my humble opinion- short sighted statement- for the creature stopped trying to pull him apart.

 

As an aside to this- I believe that the creature did not seek to actively kill him. I believe in truth it did wish to merely take his hand. Yet the thing we spoke to is as alien to us as we are to it. Does it possess a concept of what we call ‘a hand’? Does it even know what limbs are? The creature may believe we are entities made of the same ‘other world’ stuff itself is made up of- and thought it could merely pull us apart like clay, and preformed other various feats of magic that magisters of the arts also can preform.

 

Back to the subject- upon ceasing trying to pull him apart, the creature began to use the most complex of magics I have ever witnessed to forge itself a body of stone (see my drawing of such for more details), and began to try and terminate the life of the group leader. Thanks to his own cunning magic, we managed to evade death. As we left, we witnessed the crystal continue to stalk the woods. Whatever it is, the being has not yet calmed down.

 

Conclusion to the Report

 

I truly am fascinated by this crystal. If my theory is true- that it is some form of device in which a Voidal Horror or some entity akin to it will use to learn of our world- then this is an opportunity never before seen. To be able to document how such a creature would familiarize itself with our realm is something I may never be able to witness again. Already- I make preparations to soon return to the creature to see if I can coax more information from it- and perhaps even teach it of our world. I do this not for selfish ambition, but for the fundamental and righteous progression of knowledge!
