VE ELDERVIK,

The courtly environment of the Kingdom of Haense can be one that is tricky to maneuver. There are a plethora of things that ladies and gentlemen might find different or complex to remember when it comes to etiquette.

In this exposition, we delve into the art of addressment, exploring the nuances that come along with it. Whether formal or informal, the initial words pave the way for a meaningful exchange, making the introduction a pivotal element in the craft of letter writing and conversation.

╠═════════════════════════════════════════════╣

ROYAL HOUSE

The highest ranking member of the KINGDOM is His (or Her) Royal Majesty. When  directly speaking to the King it is important to remember to use formal address, especially in public. After first addressing him in formal format, using Your Royal Majesty, it is at the discretion of His Royal Majesty if you may thereafter address him as the simpler Your Majesty.

The highest ranking members of society are those of His Majesty’s own household. The ROYAL HOUSEHOLD includes His Majesty’s brothers, sisters, and his children. In the event of a Heir-apparent to the Kingdom, their family would also be included.

All members of the Royal Family are to be addressed as His (or Her) Royal Highness in formal or passive settings, and Your Royal Highness in a direct setting. Although His (or Her) Royal Highness is used most often, in a less formal setting His (or Her) Highness is acceptable.

This is apart from the HEIR-APPARENT or THE PRINCESS ROYAL, who is uniquely addressed as His (or Her) Serene Highness, or of course Your Serene Highness in terms of direct addressments.

Some examples:

TO THE MONARCH ONCE ALLOWED

“Your Majesty, will you play me in a match of chess?”

TO A PRINCE OR PRINCESS UPON FIRST MEETING

“Your Royal Highness, who tailored your garments pray tell?”

SPEAKING TO A PRINCE OR PRINCESS ONCE ALLOWED

“Your Highness, how goes the weather in the northern district?”

ABOUT THE PRINCE OR PRINCESS TO ANOTHER

“Her Royal Highness has the most wonderful etiquette, she is most befitting of her title.”

SPEAKING TO THE HEIR-APPARENT UPON FIRST MEETING

“Your Serene Highness, did you sit in on the last Duma meeting?”

DUCAL HOUSEHOLDS

This is the second highest ranking in society. Only the most esteemed pedigree within the Kingdom are therefore granted a duchy. The correct way to formally address a Duke or Duchess is Your Grace.  Between nobility the Duke of the title may be addressed fondly as Duke [Last Name] or Duchess [Last Name]

The consort bears the similar stylings of, “Duchess [Last Name]” and “Lady [Last Name] or My Lady in less formal settings. They may also be addressed as Your Grace, the same as their husband. For male consorts the same applies, but Lady would be Lord and Duchess would be Duke.

The children will use the honorary title “Lord” or “Lady” in front of their names and in cursory settings “Her Ladyship” or “His Lordship”. For distant relatives of the house such as cousins of the main line don the stylings of “Lord” and “Lady”, but have no extra flourish for their signatures.

Some examples:

The consort or a female holder bears the similar stylings of, “Margravine [Margraviate]” and “Lady  [Margraviate] or “My Lady” in less formal settings.

The children of this titlage style themselves as The Right Honorable. For distant relatives of the house such as cousins of the main line don the stylings of “Lord” and “Lady”, but have no extra flourish for their signatures.

COMITAL & VISCOMITAL HOUSEHOLDS

The fourth and fifthest highest ranking class in society is the Comital Household and thereafter the Viscomital. Though in terms of addressment it is not much different from the Margrativate Household.  A Count or Viscount is to be addressed most formally as “The Right Honorable [Name], Count of [County]” - “The Right Honorable [Name], Viscount of [Viscounty]”, or as “The Rt Hon. The Count of [County]” - “The Rt Hon. The Viscount of [Viscounty]” on more written  occasions. He may subsequently be addressed as “My lord”, “Lord [County or Viscounty]”.

The consort or female title holder bears the similar stylings of, “Countess or Viscountess [Last Name]” and “Lady [Last Name]” or “My Lady” in less formal settings.

The children of this titlage style themselves as The Honorable. For distant relatives of the house such as cousins of the main line don the stylings of “Lord” and “Lady”, but have no extra flourish for their signatures.

A Baroness is to be addressed in formal settings quite similarly to the male stylage, “The Honorable, The Baroness [Barony]”, “Baroness of [Barony]”' or “Her Honorable, The Lady [Barony]” in a more hasty situation.

The sons and daughters of a Baron may use the stylings of “Lord” and “Lady”, but have no extra flourish for their signatures and similarly for distant relatives of the house such as cousins of the main line.
