        PREFACE // PRAEFATIO

“And I am the Lord GOD without peer, and My power is the only power, and My eternity is the only eternity, and all the eons of Virtue shall sustain the righteous.”

- Virtue 7:9

As a new era dawns, and the world once again faces the threats of heresy, corruption, and the vile creatures of Iblees, the Order of the Grail emerges as a proud chapter of the revered Order of Saint Lucien. Sworn to protect the sacred Grail of Saint Lucien, we stand as an unyielding bastion of righteousness and the sword of GOD’s justice. Rooted in tradition, strengthened by faith, and guided by the teachings of Saint Lucien of Savoie, we rise to defend the faithful and uphold the light of truth and virtue.

HISTORY // HISTORIA

The Vandorian Order (1437-1447)

In the turbulent post-Exodus age, the decaying remnants of the Holy Orenian Empire and the Church of the True Faith faced new and perilous challenges. Once-peaceful lands fell prey to roaming bands of lawless marauders, eager to plunder any wealth that remained after years of ceaseless factional warfare. Abresi, a former beacon of Human aristocracy and power, crumbled into a den of vice and sin. Where order once reigned, petty gangs now brazenly roamed the streets, even daring to rob the High Pontiff himself. Neither church nor clergyman were spared from these hostilities, with thieves only staying their hand for the promise of precious tithes. Fed up with the assaults on those who sought peace, Lucien II sent out a call to all devout men willing to take up arms in the name of the Cross.

Though the majority of the Order of the White Rose had departed with Emperor Horen V for the mythical lands of Aeldin, a small group remained behind in an unsuccessful effort to defend their fortress of Ard’Kerrack in the heartland of Kaedrin. After being driven out by a coalition of Raevir, Flay, and dwarf-backed Adunians, these veterans found themselves aimless and destitute on the streets of Abresi. Among them, Jack Rovin, a former man-at-arms of the White Rose, founded a mercenary band with his son, Voron Rovin, and a displaced Adunian noble, Rymuel Elendil. Originally performing minor contracts, the group gained fame by helping defend Shadowcastle in 1439. Their valor caught the attention of Lucien II, whom they saved from a group of marauding bandits. Grateful for their intervention, Lucien II invited them to serve the Church as holy warriors, defenders of both the sword and the cross. Though hesitant at first, the men eventually agreed, recognizing a higher calling in service of the divine. In 1447, they established the Order of Saint Lucien, naming Lucien I, Velwyn Ashford, as their patron saint. In homage to their lost home of Ard’Kerrack, they built their new fortress in the mountains of Eastmarch, naming it the Temple of Ard’Krallachh. Thus began the legacy of the Order of Saint Lucien.

The First Order of Saint Lucien (1447-1460)

The Order soon swelled in numbers, with penitents from across the land seeking to join its ranks in hopes of absolution and the promise of salvation in the Seven Skies. Their burgeoning influence drew the ire of local nobles and rival factions, most notably the Decterum, the official military force of Oren, which viewed the Lucienists as rivals. Despite these tensions, the Lucienists remained in good standing with King Heinrich ‘the Bastard,’ avoiding outright conflict with his forces. However, clashes between the authority of the Church and the ambitions of local lords continued to grow.

Even as tensions simmered at home, the Order of Saint Lucien found success abroad, particularly in aiding King Heinrich’s campaign against the Grand Kingdom of Urguan. Their expertise in siege warfare, a skill long forgotten since the Exodus, proved invaluable in the expulsion of the Urguanite invaders. The Order's martial prowess did not stop at the battlefield; they led inquisitions against cultists and heretics in New Malinor, where they revived the old practice of taking trophies from fallen Elven enemies. Rumors of a genocide strained relations with the Elves, but the Order pressed on, unyielding in their mission to purge Iblees’ followers from the land.

The Order’s strength grew further when they established a new bailiwick near the ruins of Ard’Kerrack, expanding their reach across the kingdom. But their rise to power also sowed resentment among the local Raev population, leading to a series of conflicts known as the Raev-Lucienist War. Internal struggles escalated when High Pontiff Lucien II was poisoned, with whispers accusing Grand Master Jack Rovin of complicity in the assassination. This internal strife, however, was put on hold as the greater threat of war with the Urguanite alliance loomed once more. Despite their internal and external struggles, the Lucienists endured, holding firm in their defense of the Faith.

With every victory, the Order of Saint Lucien solidified its place as one of the most formidable forces in post-Exodus Oren, its legacy forever entwined with the turbulent history of the realm."

The Second Order of Saint Lucien (1521-1526)

The fall of the original Order of Saint Lucien, combined with the political and military upheavals following the Schism War and the destruction of Vanderfell in 1491, left the Lucienist tradition seemingly buried in the ashes of history. However, the ideals of the Order lived on in the hearts of a few survivors and devout followers who longed for a return to the days when faith and martial discipline walked hand-in-hand. Among them was Baudric Rovin, a distant descendant of the original Lucienist Grand Master, Jack Rovin. Disguised as a simple monk, Baudric traveled across the Isles of Vailor, gathering a group of men loyal to the ideals of Saint Lucien and the Vander traditions. His pilgrimage led him to the faraway Caliphate of Khalestine, where many former Lucienists had sought refuge after being declared traitors by the reformed Kingdom of Oren under King Andrik Vydra.

In Khalestine, Baudric found both old Lucienist allies and a new Qalasheen populace ready to embrace the holy brotherhood. Among his recruits were Adil the Eagle-Eyed, and Nafis Yar, the Qalasheen bastard son of one of Ser Raigeki’s descendants, a key figure in Lucienist history. Unlike its predecessor, the Second Order of Saint Lucien allowed the initiation of women, and Aisha became the first female sister of the Order. Baudric officially declared the reformation of the Order in a secret ceremony in Khalestine’s Bailiwick, generously donated to the Lucienists by Caliph Faiz Kharadeen. Here, Baudric was crowned Grand Master of the revived Order of Saint Lucien and knighted Nafis Yar as Grand Commander, alongside Peter Rovin and Darius de Denesle.

The Second Order's emergence was timely. In 1520, the Dukes’ War erupted between the Ashford-controlled Kingdom of Oren and a coalition of powerful duchies. Seizing the moment, Baudric led his Lucienist knights into the Battle of the Forest, disguised as monks while blessing the loyalist forces under King Olivier. At the height of the battle, the Lucienists revealed themselves and charged into the fray, leading to a decisive victory over the Ducal Coalition. This victory won the Lucienists both glory and renewed favor with the High Pontiff Daniel II, who had long been an ally of Baudric during his priesthood.

With their reputation restored, the Lucienists participated in further campaigns, including the Siege of Barrowyck in 1521, which saw the downfall of the Ducal Coalition. However, despite their military success, the Order’s existence remained precarious. The Church of Canon had outlawed the reformation of the Order following the disbandment of the first Lucienists, and though High Pontiff Daniel II accepted their protection, the Lucienists' presence drew ire from certain factions within the Church. Nonetheless, the Lucienists refrained from looting the captured city of Brelus and returned to their base in Ard Ghorrock to focus on purging Khalestine of its cultist infestation.

The Second Order of Saint Lucien ended in 1526, with its disbandment following a series of internal and external pressures. Although short-lived, the reformation left a lasting impact, with its traditions surviving through the Qalasheen and Vander cultures in Khalestine.

The Third Order of Saint Lucien (1654-1665)

The Third reformation of the Order of Saint Lucien was sparked by a chance encounter. In 1654, Robert Rovin, a descendant of the Rovin line and a wandering holy knight, entered Adelsburg while wearing the long-forgotten tabard of the Lucienists. Despite it being over a century since the Order's disbandment, Robert sought to revive its legacy. His chance came when he crossed paths with High Pontiff Everard IV during a wedding in Santegia. In the midst of the ceremony, Santegian terrorists launched a brutal attack on the High Pontiff, but Robert courageously intervened, rescuing the Pontiff and buying enough time for his escape. When asked what reward he sought for his heroic actions, Robert declined any offers of wealth or titles, humbly requesting instead to be ordained as a priest.

Impressed by Robert’s piety and courage, Everard IV granted his request, sending Robert on a three-year journey to spread the Canonist faith. During this time, the Holy Orenian Empire was embroiled in a civil war in Urguan, and Canonists were being openly persecuted in Adelsburg by heretics and raiders. Upon completing his pilgrimage, Robert returned to Everard IV with a solemn report: a church militant was desperately needed to defend the faithful. Robert offered to reform the Order of Saint Lucien, gathering his small band of followers to serve as holy warriors under the Church of Canon. The High Pontiff agreed, and in 1654, the Third Order of Saint Lucien was officially reborn.

The Lucienists quickly established their new headquarters in Rhodesia, formerly known as Metz, where they constructed Kaer’Rosencrantz, their new fortress. The Lucienists wasted no time proving their worth. Shortly after their reformation, the Order found itself embroiled in the undead invasion that had plagued the Isles of Axios. The Lucienists fought valiantly, retaking the township of Ratville after it fell to the undead forces. However, their victory was short-lived. A deadly substance known as thanhium began to spread across Rhodesia, freezing the surrounding lake and threatening all life in the area. Realizing the severity of the threat, the Lucienists made the difficult decision to euthanize their dying livestock and evacuate the island, fleeing alongside other descendants to the Cloud Temple to escape the creeping spread of thanhium.

Despite the setback, the Lucienists persevered. Upon arriving on the continent of Atlas, Grand Master Robert Rovin stepped down from leadership, passing the mantle to Ser Rakim Yar, the son of Nafis Yar. Under Rakim’s leadership, the Third Order of Saint Lucien grew in strength, recruiting veterans from the Kingdom of the Westerlands who brought valuable knowledge of combating the undead. The Order quickly gained a reputation as one of the most formidable forces on Atlas, continuing the fight against the non-human threats that emerged from the ruins of Urguan and Mordring’s undead forces.

However, the Lucienists' resurgence was cut short by political strife. In 1665, Emperor John VI of Oren was killed in a coup orchestrated by his distant cousin, Canonius Horen, leading to the dissolution of the Holy Orenian Empire. In the ensuing chaos, the Lucienists found themselves caught in the crossfire of civil war. Their efforts to restore order and protect the faithful were met with resistance, and ultimately, the Order was disbanded once more after the death of Grand Master Rakim Yar. Though the Third Order of Saint Lucien had fought bravely against the forces of darkness and chaos, their legacy was once again confined to the annals of history, awaiting the day it might rise again.

The Order of the Grail (1998 - Present)

Though the Order of Saint Lucien may never fully reform, a new chapter has risen in the wake of the Robertsine Crusades, carrying forth the revered legacy of the Lucienists. This chapter house, the Order of the Grail, has proven its might in the holy wars against the infidels and now bears a sacred duty: to protect the Grail of Saint Lucien, bestowed upon High Priest Ro'eh Tzon, and to safeguard the faithful of GOD.

In the midst of the Grand Schismatic War of 2020, also known as the War of Crown and Crozier. The Order of the Grail of Saint Lucien stood as one amidst chaos. Sworn to the defense of the Pontifical States and the safeguarding of the Holy Grail of Saint Lucien, the Order marched alongside the soldiers of the Holy League into battle after battle.

MISSION // MISSIONIS

The Order of the Grail, a devoted brotherhood formed in the wake of the Robertsine Crusades, was established to restore a stable and armed militant wing within the Church of Canon. Sworn to protect the sacred Grail of Saint Lucien and to defend the faithful of GOD, the Order operates independently of any secular authority, granting it the freedom to undertake missions others might find unconventional. These missions include expeditions into the tainted lands of Iblees’ kin, the hunting of heretics and abominations, safeguarding the Clergy and its missionaries, escorting pilgrims to holy sites, engaging in charitable works, and educating the faithful in the word of GOD.

FAITH // FIDUS

The Brothers of the Order are bound to adhere strictly to the True Faith of Humanity, dedicating themselves to the long-forgotten sect of Lucienism, named after Saint Lucien of Savoie, the Order’s revered patron saint. As followers of this ancient faith, they are known as Lucienists. Their devotion not only shields them from punishment in the afterlife but also instills in them a profound sense of monastic duty. The traditional and conservative tenets of Lucienism compel the Brothers to act as pious representatives of their spiritual leader, the High Priest, upon this earth. Within the Order’s halls, many Lucienists devote their time to the task of writing books, reprinting copies of the Holy Scrolls, and preserving the theological works of the Church.

A PROMISE OF REBIRTH  // PROMISSIO REBIRTH

The Order of the Grail, though charged with purging heresies through physical might, stands apart from all other holy orders by possessing the unique authority to offer redemption and forgiveness to those they encounter. A final plea for mercy is extended to criminals, thieves, and heretics seeking deliverance from both worldly and eternal punishment. Enlistment within the Order is lifelong, barring physical or mental unfitness. In rare instances, temporary service may be granted, though such individuals remain at the rank of a regular layman, with no opportunity for advancement beyond that.

CODE OF TENANTS // CODICE ET TENENTIBUS

CHAPTER MASTER

To become one of the Great Bailiffs, an individual must be elected by the Council of Bailiffs and receive the Chapter Master’s approval. In the event of the Chaptermaster’s death, the entire Council remains in place unless otherwise directed by the new Chaptermaster. The new Chaptermaster is chosen according to the will of the previous one. MONASTIC KNIGHT

Monastic Knights, distinguished by their white tabard with the red cross, have earned a vital role in the Order. Their primary duty is to protect the flock of GOD, but they may follow one of several unique paths. The Path of Justice calls upon knights to investigate sins and uncover the truth, serving as enforcers of moral righteousness. Knights of the Path of Diligence take on a scholarly role, sharing knowledge and wisdom with fellow members of the Order. Meanwhile, those on the Path of Repentance seek out sinners, guiding them back to the church and offering them a path toward redemption.

As experienced members of the Order, they serve directly under their assigned Sergeant-at-Arms, taking on the responsibility of mentoring newly sworn brothers. They guide these members in their duties and ensure the values and traditions of the Order are upheld, all while setting a strong example of dedication, discipline, and leadership.

BROTHER-AT-ARMS

Brothers-At-Arms, though still a lower rank within the Order, have earned the honor of being addressed as 'Brother' and are permitted to adorn their tabards with the white cross. They take on important duties such as patrolling, safeguarding priests, distributing alms, and acting as role models to those still progressing through the ranks. Their status reflects their dedication and growth within the Order.

INITIATE

Initiates are the grunts of the Order, making up the bulk of its fighting force. They are forbidden from bearing the Rhodesian Cross and may only wear the plain black tabard as a mark of their station. These recruits serve as foot soldiers, performing menial tasks, running errands, and accompanying sworn brothers on patrols and missions. An Initiate must prove themselves though unwavering devotion and discipline before being considered for elevation to a Brother-at-Arms. Until then, they toil in service to the Grail, bearing the weight of duty as they prepare for their final oath.

✠ KNIGHTHOOD ✠

Knighthood within the Order is reserved for only the most distinguished members, a highly prestigious position earned through exceptional service. Knights hold the authority to command any of the ranks of foot in the absence of both the Marshal and Sergeant-at-Arms. Their knightly title often reflects their rank and standing, such as a Knight of Justice in formal situations.

Nobles may safely send their sons to serve as squires within the Order of the Grail, without fear of forfeiting their inheritance, should they rise to the rank of Knight.

In rare cases, knights from other retinues are permitted to join the Order while retaining their titles. However, they must still swear the same oaths and are required to provide a levy of five men to serve as Brothers.

✠ Knight Ranks ✠

KNIGHT OF JUSTICE

Knights of Justice within the Order of the Grail serve as the vigilant investigators and enforcers of moral integrity, both within the Order and throughout the broader realm of Canondom. Sworn to uphold Canon Law, they are tasked with maintaining spiritual and moral order, ensuring that the teachings of the church are not compromised by hidden wrongdoing.

KNIGHT OF DILIGENCE

Knights of the Path of Diligence play a vital scholarly role within the Order of the Grail focusing on the preservation and dissemination of knowledge to strengthen the Order’s mission. They are responsible for educating fellow members and ensuring that the Order’s wisdom continues to grow. Their intellectual contributions are just as crucial as their martial prowess. Knights of Diligence act as the Order's intellectual backbone, offering guidance in both spiritual matters and practical warfare. They ensure that the Order is not only strong in battle but also wise in approach, passing on crucial knowledge about GOD’s enemies and arming their brothers with the skills needed to defeat them.

If a squire has not completed their squireship after a period of service, they are typically accepted into the Order as a Brother, with the potential for further training to become an officer. During their apprenticeship, squires often perform duties equivalent to those of a Brother when working alongside the ranks of foot soldiers.
