Estevot willed himself to his feet for the first time in years, and climbed up the stairs onto the deck of the ship that Lenora and Gus had gotten him on. As he gazed upon the karsts, smoke flowing up into the clouds, blackening the sky, part of him felt numb. His illness had forced him to stay out of the war as much as possible. His children had the gift of not having been too attached to their home, but for Estevot, it felt like the end of an era. His home was gone. His family was now in danger, every single one of them. And those who he thought he had faith in, had broken that. As he felt to his knees, coughing up blood, he silently offered a prayer to God. He didn't know if he was listening or if he had been forsaken for not following the Church, but he chose to not let them take his faith that God loved his creations. He prayed for the souls of those who had fallen, on either side. He prayed for his family, that they would be safe, and that they would not be hunted now that the war had ended. And he prayed most of all, for the future. That such a war, where an overwhelming oppressor attacked the less fortunate and those who were viewed as lesser for nothing more than selfish gain, would not happen again in his lifetime, and that those who forced such a war to happen, they would know God's justice, and he prayed for them to find redemption. With that, he steeled himself for what was coming. He had a duty he had not been able to tend to for years now. No more. It was time for Estevot Heymor to be a shield again.
