The Beast of the Bleakfall

And with it has come tribulations new to this Commonwealth. On the twelfth of the Snow’s Maiden, we saw the freezing of the River Petra. Its trade lanes now lay closed, unpassable by boat. Amidst talks with the Bourgmestre of the Free City of Chambery pertaining to a recent attack upon the city did the Commonwealth discover a newfound ill of this Bleakfall.

 

As the river froze before our very eyes, a beast of immense proportions came forth upon the ice. As tall as three men in stature, covered in fur as white as the snows which now dot the Meadowlands, its weight near sundered the thick surface which had formed upon the River Petra. Slowly it approached, each step pounding the ice as it strained beneath its largesse. When it neared, it uttered but one word: 

 

“Food.”

 

A demand, for it was made apparent that were its hunger not sated, it would take what it desired from the Free City, and those denizens who now stood upon its docks in shock of the creature. The tension was cut abruptly as the beast snatched a steed upon the dock, its neck snapped without so much as a second thought. With this, the beast lumbered back to where it had originated.

 

The Bleakfall has come, and with it hardship. Hardship is nothing new to this Commonwealth, though I promise you now that this beast shall not be permitted to steal and reave as it pleases. The Free City is an integral part of this realm, and thus it shall not suffer under my watch.

Khasef Bastien sets out a scarf and a pair of woolen mittens in his preparations to head homeward. A hiemal chill rattles the windows, and he shivers.

Arakawa's mouth tightens at the thought - of Petra bound by unrelenting snow, their stores of foodstuffs now threatened by this arctic beast. 

 

"That beast will find raiding our food a costly venture." He vows.

 

Small cylindrical casings of brass scattered his workbench - some open, some filled already with their payloads of Arcane components. Turning to pick up his artificed staff, he rams one home with a satisfying click.
