Overview

House Callaghan is a bloodline hailing from the cliffs and golden wheat fields of Numendil. Known for their fierce sense of duty, unwavering resilience, loyalty, and martial abilities, the Callaghans made a name for themselves through hard work and dedication, initially coming from nothing. In the time since, they have pledged themselves wholly to the cause of their home, Garenbrig, serving as devout knights, stewards, and champions of honor. Their household thrives on discipline, loyalty, and the enduring belief that strength is proven in sacrifice.

History

House Callaghan traces its roots not to ancient kings or storied bloodlines but to the soil, to farmhands and shepherds who once tilled the rugged lands of the highlands. In time, a desire to rise above their station stirred within them. Seeking more than the plowshare, they left their homesteads behind and found a new purpose in the fiefdom of Garenbrig, before it was called a Principality. Through years of loyalty, hardship, and sacrifice, the Callaghans carved out a name for themselves, not with titles but with deeds. Whether standing guard upon city walls, marching off on distant crusades, or confronting the shadows that haunt the realm, they have earned their place through action.

House Morals and Values

Humility ☘

The Callaghans rose from humble beginnings, once mere farmhands and field workers before earning their name through service. Every member is taught to carry that humility with them, to remember where they came from, no matter how far they rise.

Protection ☘

Safeguarding the innocent has always been a cornerstone of the house’s identity. Through steel and service, the Callaghans proved themselves in battle. Today, at least two members are expected to serve in arms, whether as knights or soldiers.

Chivalry ☘

After settling in Garenbrig and Numendil, the Callaghans embraced the code of chivalry practiced by knights and the Radiant Guard. Honor, courtesy, and duty are values they hold fast in word and deed.

Perseverance ☘

To endure hardship without complaint is highly valued in the Callaghan household. They believe strength lies in one’s sword arm and resilience through life’s burdens and trials.

Kinship ☘

Family stands at the heart of the house. Loyalty to one another, across generations and circumstances, is not merely expected but cherished. Each Callaghan carries the weight of the name with pride and lifts their kin in turn.

Knowledge ☘

House Callaghan encourages the pursuit of learning through martial discipline, books, or lived experience. Understanding one’s world, people, history, and trials is key to leading and surviving well.

Culture and Traditions

Adaptability ☘
The Callaghans are no strangers to wandering or resettlement. Wherever they make their home, be it village, or distant fief, they strive to honor the customs of the land. Yet, they do so with thought, not blind acceptance, embracing what aligns with their values while holding firm to their roots. They adapt not to blend in, but to endure without losing themselves to the gears of another’s design.

Knighthood ☘
Knighthood within House Callaghan is a fundamental piece of stability within the family. It is not just a matter of house pride but also purpose, showing their loyalty to their home and the citizens. When a Callaghan is knighted, whether from the Dawn, Radiant Guard, liege, or another order, the newly-made knight returns to the family hearth and burns a piece of their old training gear (a dented pauldron, frayed belt, or worn bootlace).

Mourning ☘
Death comes for all, and House Callaghan is not exempt from mortality. When a family member dies, regardless if they share blood or were adopted into the family, their remains are to be burned atop a pyre. Once the funeral for the deceased family member concludes, those in the family wear a black armband, ribbon, or belt on their person for a maximum of a year.

Should a Callaghan’s remains be unrecoverable, a house banner shall be burned in their place, along with an object or item close to them.

Blessing of Malchediael ☘

While not required of every kin, House Callaghan proudly bears the blessing of Malchediael, the Aengul of Courage. Those who accept this blessing stand as shields against the spawn of darkness. Through this blessing, they find strength to rise against fear and face horrors that would turn lesser hearts to flight. Though it is not required, it is strongly urged for at least one Callaghan to bear the blessing of Malchediael, and aid in the fight against the dark.

Marcáil na Gairme ☘

When a Callaghan sets to their path, be it in arms, stewardship, healing, trade, or another honest craft, a token of their chosen calling is made for them. This token serves as both a mark of pride and a symbol of duty, to be carried wherever they go. Though any family member may forge it, tradition holds that it should not be crafted by the one who bears it.

Coming of Age

Once a Callaghan, by blood or adoption, reaches twelve years of age, they begin the family’s coming of age tradition. This rite may commence any time between twelve and sixteen and is expected to be completed by eighteen. At the start, the young Callaghan is given a dulled sword, and any sharp blade is taken from them (though they may carry other means of defense). They must then undertake three unique trials, chosen to suit their strengths and test their weaknesses. Upon completing these trials, the dulled sword is replaced with a sharpened blade, a symbol of their determination, growth, and resilience.
