TO THE EMPIRE AND ITS ALLIES, I OFFER CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR VICTORY.

THE Dwarves have fallen, Orcs gave in to surrender (much to my surprise), ruins will be the only reminder of where borders once stood. It is no small thing to stand alone at the height of the world. I will not linger much on those who came before you.  Those aforementioned, who carved themselves deep into the mountains, believed it to see them through the coming ages. It did not. The aforementioned, no less certain, trusted in their strength as an answer to all things. It was not. Those who come to heads with humanity believe themselves enough.

And, in the end, they were not.

Such endings are neither rare, nor are they remarkable. What is remarkable, however, is this: Mankind stands where few could. In the time I have lived, such a time much too long to count, I have seen patterns take form again and again. A people rise, carried forward by pride, fear, a hunger to achieve something greater than themselves, or perhaps something simpler still. At the core of all motivation is the refusal to remain as they are. Of all races, it is mankind who embodies this most completely. Elves are given centuries, and with their extended time, patience to refine, to perfect. How fortunate are they to hold strength in time itself? Orcs and such adjacent are given an undeniable strength. Others are all shaped by their own gifts, each defined in part by what they are granted at birth.  Mankind is granted none of these in abundance. Their lives are brief, their bodies unremarkable in natural traits, their place in the world forever uncertain. Yet, this fact has never halted them.

They do not do this slowly, for they lack the patience and time, but they hold something far less tangible and far more relentless than anything else. Humanity will reach, they will grasp, and they, in their stubbornness, will refuse the shape they are given. In doing so, they reshape the world around them, in doing so they demand more from the world than it was ever made to give. That is to say, Mankind is defined by what it refuses to lack and boundless ambition. There is something to admire in that, whether one wishes to admit it or not, even if it is in equal parts cause of tragedy and progress, both past and present. They will forever hold an insistence that what stands before them is not enough, that there will always be more they can yet see beyond the horizon.  And, perhaps, that is their God given right.

I find no reason to call it good, nor any reason to call it wrong. It is simply the way of things.

It is with no doubt that the Empire’s victory will be remembered as strength, regardless of how negative or positive that strength may be looked upon. Achievements by humanity then, now, and onwards will be told more cleanly than it was lived. It is proof of what is Mankind’s nature, for they cannot live without such. Rare is it that any one man, woman, or child finds joy in being idle. Though, too, is their boundless ambition cause for their own shortcomings. Cause of historical patterns of victory and loss, of peace and violence. I will spend generations more witnessing such. I will spend years more watching them create, destroy, conquer, and relinquish. What holds my attention more is what follows after. Humanity never idles; I know this well of my ilk. Ambition does not end in the face of success, nor does it ever quiet itself after perceived obstacles are removed. It grows sharper with time, more certain, no matter how long given to fester. For if humanity is forced to remain idle and complacent they grow restless, it is not in their nature to do so. They will become restless, and in that restlessness their hunger to take more.

Rarely is it that we are left with little in equal force as opposition, this is what so many before having sought and so few have understood. To most this is cause of glory, but I find it simply raises one question. What does ambition become when it has nowhere left to go? I mentioned before that it takes the form of restlessness, but where will such be directed toward? I have seen moments akin to this, albeit not in the same form; heights achieved mistaken as endings reached. This is merely a threshold where I must ask the question,

Where does mankind’s ambition lead, when there is nothing left to conquer?

Some of you may find yourselves looking outward, though to what exactly I ponder. To the stars, perhaps? To the moon, perhaps? Will you conquer the sea? Such endeavors I will have no choice but to applaud. Others of you will look closer, toward one another. Perhaps out of malice, or weakness, perhaps not. Maybe you will uplift one another. Maybe it will be those of you who direct your ambitions in such ill manner, those of you who lack what wonder and curiosity humanity has always held, that will be the cause of my headache wherein I see myself stuck watching the same happenings over and over.

Your next steps, regardless, are ones I will remain to see as I always have. What anyone chooses to do following this grandiose display of what a united humanity is capable of will matter more than how the point was arrived at. So, I end with this, not warning or reprimand as I am not writing in the context of morality, nor do I care to hear about it:

There is little wisdom in clinging to struggle once struggle has passed, even if stubbornness is in equal part to human nature just as ambition. Too many mistake such stubbornness as some noble strength, believing honor in “fighting to the very end!” when this ‘end’ serves no purpose. Those who cannot yield when they must do not endure. You will break. History is not shaped by those who die trying to prove a fruitless point, trust in that many shall ensure you are remembered as a bumbling fool for that as only those of us who remain long enough to witness the aftermath have such control.
