 Lights Under Ildon

(Player version)

The Rumors

Word has been spreading through Ildon about something found beneath the city.

It started with minor collapses in older districts, followed by tunnels being cleared that didn’t match any known maps. At first, it was treated as routine maintenance problems in an old, heavily built-up city.

Then something was discovered that changed that assumption.

What was found wasn’t just more underground infrastructure.

It appears to be a larger constructed space beneath the city, but its purpose and origin are unclear. Reports from those who have gone further into it vary, and many details conflict depending on who is telling the story.

Some expeditions haven’t returned. Others have come back with incomplete or inconsistent accounts.

An exploring guild in Edrica has been formed to explore and assess threats. They are now hiring people to go below and document what is actually there.

Guild Notice (IC Responses Welcome)

Posters like this are appearing more often across Ildon’s lower districts and taverns. Some are torn down. Some are copied. Some are left alone, as if people are waiting for others to go first.

If your character would respond to this notice—questions, interest, warnings, rumors, or even refusal—feel free to reply in-character to Edrica.

Messages might represent:

  • Asking the guild for details before signing on
  • Rumors your character has heard about what lies below
  • Personal reasons for avoiding or accepting the job
  • Contact attempts, warnings, or counter-offers from interested parties
  • Networking/Partying with other people to go into the dungeons

Not all replies will be answered immediately, but they are considered part of the world.

Lore Framing

This campaign is designed to fit within LotC’s world without altering its canon events.

  • The underground city is isolated from surface politics
  • Its origin is deliberately unknown and ancient in nature
  • Surface conflicts remain background context rather than the focus of play

The tone leans toward:

  • Exploration over conquest
  • Mystery over certainty
  • Consequences over spectacle

OUT OF CHARACTER

Campaign Structure

This is a sandbox-style campaign with loose narrative threads rather than a strictly linear story. Players are expected to explore, make choices, and engage with the underground ruins at their own pace.

  • The underground city is the primary setting for exploration
  • Story elements exist, but are discovered organically rather than forced
  • Player actions shape what parts of the ruins are revealed and developed

If you are interested in participating, respond to this post in-character. After I assess interest in this, I will contact people to see what times work.

Drop-in / Drop-out Play

This campaign is designed to be flexible. I will probably set 2-3 nights a week to run it, and people can come and go. You won't be expected to join every session.

  • Players may come and go between sessions as needed
  • New players can join at any time
  • When joining an ongoing group, new characters will start at the level of the lowest-level party member

Exception:
If a completely new expedition group is formed, all members will begin together at the appropriate starting level.

System & Tools

This campaign will be run using D&D Beyond and Discord.

No purchases are required. All necessary materials will be provided through the campaign. Players only need basic familiarity with the platform, and help will be available if needed.

Ruleset Note

This campaign will use a heavily retooled version of Dungeons of Drakkenheim, adapted for Ildon and the underground setting. I will be using roughly the same story and maps, but it will be modified.

Expect:

  • Adjusted factions and locations
  • Reworked encounters and progression
  • A focus on exploration, survival, and discovery

Character Requirements

All characters must use races from Lord of the Craft.

Since this is run in Dungeons & Dragons, LotC races will be proxied using standard D&D races.

Examples:

  • Tabaxi → Kharajyr
  • Elf subraces → Mali’aheral / Mali’ame / Mali’ker
  • Dwarf → Urguanite / Dwed
  • Human → Any human culture

Mechanically, you use D&D rules.
Narratively, you are fully LotC.

You can proxy or modify things to explain why you have it, particularly with magic as the rules are different between DnD and LotC.

Expectations

  • Roleplay is the focus over optimization
  • Stay in character during play
  • No metagaming or powergaming
  • LotC cultural identity should shape decisions and behavior
