Life Corruption

Blackish-brown living venus flytrap lunging at camera

Background & Origin

While some mages sought to use the void to bring life into being, other less scrupulous wizards realized that they could simply twist life that already existed to their will. They sought not to make life to do their bidding, but to mold and warp innocent creatures and even plants to their whims. From granting flora sapience to turning men to monsters, Life Corrupters are the master puppeteers.

Explanation

Life Corruption is about controlling other lifeforms, but hypnotism is the bottoms. Puppeteering as an appropriate word for this magic, because it revolves around controlling other life to do your commands. Similar to Life Evocation, it is about other creatures attacking in the mage's stead but commandeered rather than created.

-Life Corruption is a [2] slot dark magic with [4] tiers.

-Life Corruption can be practiced with a valid [MA] under a character with a valid [TA] in Life Corruption.

-Life Corrupters may not learn Live Evocation.

Abilities

Instill Trust [T1/NC]: Slightly warping the minds of their victim, novice Life Corrupters may cause the victim to briefly see them as a trusted friend.

Mechanics:

Spoiler

After [3] emotes of sustained physical contact with the victim, the victim will see the Corrupter as a close friend for the next emote. They will treat them completely as such, telling them anything they would tell a close friend. After the emotes are up, the victim will have no memory of them. (The emotes, not the corrupter.)

Redlines:

Spoiler

-This is not a total trance, and they still have full power over their mind, they simply act as if they have always known you.

-A Corrupter may not hypnotize the same victim more than once in [1] IRL day and may not hypnotize more than [3] characters per IRL day.

-The victim may pull away at any time during the [3] emotes contact as they would any normal grab.

Warp Flora [T2/C]: Using their power to corrupt the land around them, Life Corruptors may warp flora to grant it sapience, and the living plants will follow their commands for the rest of the battle, before falling into a pile of ash.

Mechanics:

Spoiler

A life corrupter may corrupt up to [3] nearby ([8] meters) small plants, turning them into Death Blooms. Despite the name these are not actually flowers, and resemble oversized venus fly traps, with razor sharp jagged teeth. They will bite the sorcerer's foes as emoted by the sorcerer. The plants have a range of [2] meters from casting location. The plants require only [1] emote with a sharp weapon or offensive magic to destroy, [2] with a blunt weapon. The spell requires [3+number of plants corrupted] emotes to corrupt the plants. They may add emotes to the corrupting the plants to grant every plant as many of these boons as emotes added:

  • Sharper teeth, capable of piercing leather.
  • Venom, which causes severe pain for 2 emotes after biting.
  • 2 heads, [requires 2 more casting emotes] to allow it to attack two people in an emote.
  • Durable, requiring an extra emote to destroy.
  • Legs [requires 2 more casting emotes] to allow it to move [2] meters per emote.
  • Long lasting, lasts [2] more emotes before disintegrating.

Redlines:

Spoiler

-The plants will automatically disintegrate either at the end of combat or [2] emotes after summoning.

-The plants may not be used for any purpose other than biting a foe.

-Boons that the wizard intends to give his plants MUST be stated on the first emote of boon-adding and cannot be changed unless the spell is interrupted.

Enrage Creature [T3/NC&C]: More experienced Corrupters may throw the mind of their victims into total disarray, causing them to mindlessly attack and destroy anything nearby. This can be allies or enemies, or just inanimate objects it will break.

Mechanics:

Spoiler

Over the course of [7] emotes of line-of-sight with a target within [6] meters, a Corrupter may use a 5th emote to instill a great and irrational rage in the victim's mind, causing them to go berserk for [2] emotes, indiscriminately destroying everything that crosses paths with them. Anything larger than an olog requires [6] emotes of line of sight.

Redlines:

Spoiler

-In order for this to be effective on descendants or anything more intelligent rather than just CAs, the Corrupter must be at least T4.

-In order for this to be effective on mindless constructs such as golems, the Corrupter must be at least T5.

Add Attribute [T4/NC]: Corrupters may magically and temporarily modify the physical abilities or form of themselves or another, from adding the ability to spit acid, to giving them saber teeth. In other words, they give themselves strengths of other races or creatures.

Mechanics:

Spoiler

This spell can be used to add physical attributes and abilities to a creature. This can borrow abilities from any CA or independent summon, as long as those abilities are not borrowed in turn from a magic. For adding a magic ability, consult ST. Adding an ability takes [10] emotes of direct contact with the target. Any physical attributes such as a tail will inflict extreme pain when added. Bodies not tailored to certain abilities will suffer. (e.g. a descendant spitting acid will severely burn their throat.)

Redlines:

Spoiler

-Any one creature can have at most [2] corrupted attributes attached to it, although T5 life corrupters may sustain [1] more.

-Attributes last [1] IRL weeks, and magic-borrowed ones only [3] days. The same attribute may not be applied to the same creature more than once every [6] IRL weeks.

OOC Purpose:

Spoiler

The purpose of this piece is to essentially add a dark version of Life Evocation, revolving around forcing existing life to your will rather than making your own. I have tried my best to balance it, but I can understand if certain parts, especially Add Attribute, need more tweaking. I think it accomplishes a dark variant in that it is not "life evocation but you can summon evil stuff" because you can probably already do that. One thing to be considered is that I currently do not have a prepared character to grandfather this magic (sense my only current character is a revenant) if it gets accepted, but if I have not unlocked my second character slot I will very soon. So, if it gets accepted I can simply make it a grandfather. I might also add some things to gear it more toward the physical attributes pre or post potential magic acceptance. (As an addition submission obviously post acceptance.) I know I have made trashy lore pieces before this is at least attempting to move past those. I know I am a novice lore writer, but I am doing my best.

Fizz here, gonna give ya my opinion!

I see what your going for, but I honestly don't think this will pass. The Redlines need work, and the descriptions of the spells also need more work. I also see this overlapping with many magics already. (Deity, druidism, other dark magics). It also seems a bit confusing to me oocly, and it seems crucial information is not there. Overall, id take a step back... and ask some voidal magic users what their input is. Im not a voidal mage (yet) on any personas, so it would be wise to contact them. Good job with the lore though, I can tell you put thought and time into this. I hope to see more of your lore ideas soon!

Have a good day!

it's a good try! when you're first starting out with writing lore, it's usually a good idea to start small. this is a very ambitious lorepiece, and until you have way more experience on how magic works on lotc, I wouldn't try to write something as complex as what you're trying to achieve.

Also, generally, magics OP as this without any drawback are frowned upon.

some things that you could work on are:

- drawbacks. your abilities and the magic itself needs serious drawbacks to make sense.

- more detailed and specific redlines. you have to consider EVERY SINGLE scenario, and ask yourself: how could people powergame this? Right now, this magic opens up a lot of avenues for powergaming.

- a severe reworking and rebalancing of the abilities. many of the abilities here would never pass, in any magic.

However, I think that this magic, in general, is unviable. Don't be discouraged, though! You'll learn over time what kind of magics the LT likes and dislikes.

Here is a really good page for you to peruse - click and read through every page linked through this page to get an idea for how lore on LOTC works.

But, you shouldn't give up! Just be sure to give the post I linked a real good read.

Good attempt don’t give up, fizz and metamancy gave good critique and took the words out of my brain.

This is pretty much what I thought the reactions were gonna be XD. I am currently working on heavily nerfing it and will probably completely replace dominate creature. Does a magic even have to have 5 tiers? cause if not I might just totally remove dominate creature along with a 5th tier. Cause I am not really sure what to put in the 5th tier.

Tbh dude, this magic is probably completely unviable. Magics don't NEED to have 5 tiers, no; but generally it's good to have 5 tiers. I would read up on the CANON ENERGIES.

here's another useful post (not calling you a dummy LOL)

and here are the canon energies

i meant it when i said your first lorepiece shouldn't be this ambitious. make some amendments, write up things like alchemy additions before you try to tackle a whole magic.

I have heavily nerfed it but ye I agree. I should probably spend more time on my Revenant.

After a while I am thinking I might make a feat that keeps Warp Flora because that is prob my favorite ability (and the only one with a shred of balance XD.)
