Application Support - Role-Play Questions

Recommended Posts

This is a post about the Role-playing questions in the Application.

Why am I making this post?

To me personally I believe that this is the most crucial part of an application. You either type out an small one or two line scenario or you make an powerful power graph that goes into detail. In picking to spend more time on each question shows your willingness and determination to get into the server but more importantly your Role-playing skills.

Where should I start?

When I help people I generally ask them to write there idea with no description just get the basic idea down first. Thinking of what to write & thinking of good vocabulary to use can slow down your writing often making you loose concentration of your idea more onto how you say it. Get the basic idea down first.

Here is my example;

Whilst traveling from the Cloud Temple you see a small halfling, being harassed by two armed warriors. They appear to be trying to steal money from him, how does your character respond?

Fomsil stands behind a tree and listens for information such as names or places. Once they have gone he goes to the Halfing and tells him what he has found out. He takes the Halfling's name and says he will return the Minas if caught.

Question is now answered. I have my basic line of what is going to happen and could easily post it. Although that would mean I have spent less than a 30 seconds on it which require little if any effort.

What should I do with it?

Pick where you can change or add in information; copy and paste it again and highlight the parts which you can spend time on.

Fomsil stands behind a tree and listens for information such as names or places. Once they have gone he goes to the Halfing and tells him what he has found out. He takes the Halfling's name and says he will return the Minas if caught.

I have selected the parts now what?

Fomsil stands behind a tree

Look for the parts that can be improve and can't be improved such as 'tree' can be and 'Fomsil' can't be. Pick out the key words 'stand' 'tree' these are your main expanding points;

Stand:

  • The way Fomsil moved the the tree fast, slow or sneakily.
  • Was there any stick or branches that he had to step over to avoid snapping which could have caused attention to him.
  • Was he just standing behind the tree or was he occasionally peaking behind the tree?

Tree:

  • Did he have to stand side ways because the tree wasn't thick enough to hide him (fat dwarfs;))
  • Was the tree smooth silky white bark or rough jagged bark.
  • Did he have to lean into the shade of the leaves?
  • Was there any spikey plants that he had to avoid putting his hands on or even an spider up near the top of the tree?

These are the things you can think of and there are tons more that just show how imaginative you are.

Now to improve it?

Yes. If you have made a check list or mentally remembers some points work your way though them. You may even think of some knew ones. In doing this it allows the writer to show his imaginative skills and effort to get in; before I came to this server writing or reading was something I never enjoyed. Now I have helped well over 50+ people with applications from server applications to villain Applications.

My improved;

Fomsil quickly eyes out an tree a few steps away and slowly takes large steps closer trying to avoid the sticks and twigs that flood the floor. Various small holes in the floor test his balance skills as he moves closer. Fomsil slams his back against the ragged bark and breaths an heavy sigh of relief that he made it. He nervously turn round and hugs the tree with his stomach trying to avoid the sharp nature plants that cover the ragged bark. Taking occasional peaks around the tree in hope to catch a glip of one of the bandits face he see's a scar on the left bandits eyebrow that he knows he can later identify him by.

After the bandits search the Halflings torn pockets taking any minas or small items in there they laugh forcefully and points to an hill and dares the Halfling to go there. Thinking that that is the place they will return to Fomsil rummages through his back to find an paper attacked to an feather & ink sac and begins to sketch out the mountain. The bushes behind them begin to rustle so the bandits rapidly make off into the distance fleeing in fear of guards. Fomsil comes out from behind the tree, instantly the Halfling turns round shaking and scared by what just happened. Fomsil smiles and moves closer not to quickly to scare the Halfling.

At a distance Fomsil asks him is he okay and he nods slightly. With his acceptance of a nod Fomsil approaches the Halfling and shared the information that he has gathered from what they said. The Halfling began to cheer up and felt grateful that Fomsil risked his life to make sure these bandits get caught.

After talking for a few minutes Fomsil kindely asked him for his name and reassuringly told him he would do everything he can to get these bandits caught and his minas return.

Shaking hands and nodding farewell the pair both walk there separate ways hoping to meet again in better circumstances.

Conclusion

I used the exact same paragraph and expanded with detail each part turning from an simple, boring and effortless answer into an proper Role-play situation.

I hope this inspires some new players to try to take more time and effort into there Role-play answers.

Please note to the applicants that read this: Size is far from a standard. Whereas iAmSparta took roughly 5 paragraphs of varying lengths, this doesn't mean you must do the same. It is recommended you strive to enhance your answers so your character's thought process may flow, but that doesn't mean it corresponds with length nor any eye candy you might present. A good vocabulary is looked upon positively, as it is often signs of maturity and an above average familiarity with the English language.

Overall however, it's the end effort that counts. When you give it your all and prove you actually care about your application (showing a complete lack of effort is enough reason for denying an application, keep this in mind), that is when you are viewed in high appraisal and are far more likely to get accepted. Showing that you can fathom a role-play situation in a way that has a lot of effort and a lot of passion is vital to getting through the application process.
