In your own words, define what the act of Roleplaying is:

This is the art, and it is an art if done with passion and enthusiasm, of creating a character. Expounding on this characters like their history, personality, ambitions, hopes and fears. Then stepping into this role

completely, submerging yourself and acting as this character completely in order to breath life into them. To act totally and interact with others as this character, in short to act out this role.

In your own Words, define what the act of Meta-Gaming is:

Meta-gaming is acting on information that you acquire as yourself out of character, that your character would not know. To avoid this one needs to use common sense and understand what you can act on, and what you cannot. For instance you yourself do not come from Asulon, however your character does. Hence certain research you do in the wiki about the history of the world would not be meta-gaming. Yet anything you hear on skype, TS, OOC or because you were aware of information regarding anything via the forums that as a character you would have no way of knowing. Must not be used, even if it doesn’t seem advantageous. This is meta-gaming. This can be as simple as calling someone by name when you haven’t been introduced, to using information you hear to wreck an in game RP event.

In your own Words, define what the act of Power-Emoting is:

Power-gaming is either playing a god like character that has no flaws, or is the process of taking away another players choice to interact, or directly affecting their character without there approval or permission.

First definition of Power Gaming- I play Vlad Darkhawk....he is 20ft tall, has the strength of a thousand men, diamond hard skin that is impervious to everything, he can fly, lift continents on his shoulders and blow so hard that the very seas turn to mist and rain. Can you see the problem here....and some characters can go on and on. The problem is Vlad is not a joy to role play with as he robs all meaning full interaction. There will be no trails and tribulations because he is practically a god. Also romantic entanglements are out....I mean would you want to kiss him, if he could blow that hard?

Sadly I have played with more than enough “Vlad’s” in my time, and I can safely say, that life without challenge takes the fun out of role play for them as well.

Second definition of Power Gaming

Vlad is told off for his character and proceeds to roll another one. “Brian Hawkins a lowly unskilled lumberjack”. Well he’s learning. While out on his travels in the forests of Asulon he is beset by three bandits. They role play very adequately a mugging. Brian proceeds to slice one of their heads off using his rusty and now kind of blunt axe with a cry of. “Brain steps smartly forwards and cleaves bandit one’s head clean from his shoulders”. Bandits get upset, start crying Power-Gaming. Vlad thinks...Oh oh....I have been accused of this before. What the devil is it?. Well it’s simple, he used an absolute statement rather than an open ended one.

This interaction robbed the player of anyway of retaliating. What Vlad should have done was used the much more open and interactive friendly statement of. “Brian steps forwards and raises his axe to defend himself from the first bandit.”

This not only does this not unfairly affect another's character her, and un-realistically I might add. An unskilled lumberjack against a full armed and experienced bandit would have to have some good history to explain how they could be effective. It also promotes a long and probably very exciting role play fight interaction that maybe results in Brain taking a beating, and losing some items. However he would have something great to add to his character development, as well as had some entertaining and enjoyable interaction. It’s important to realise role play isn’t about winning but the enjoyment in the interaction with the world, and the people around you.

Third definition of Power Gaming...

So Vlad is learning, he’s got rid of the god like character. Now knows what another definition of power gaming is. Do you think he’ll go three for three. *winks*. So Brian the lowly lumberjack decides he’s had enough of being a Lumberjack. Heck if you get your backside handed to you by bandits, where is the fun in this. So he looks down the forums, looks at the different kingdoms and thinks. What Ho....King Godfrey. Well I fancy a bit of the royalty. He begins to roll a new character “Richard” who is King Godfrey’s brother. Oh dear poor old Vlad is going to fall into another pitfall, because he has neither asked permission or approval from Mogroka himself to do this. So what he has done is again affect someone else's character and story and hasn’t given them any chance to dispute it.

Characters generally are quite personal things, and a lot of people devote a lot of time to them, an their history. Making it as complete and realistic as possible. Affecting their world without permission is just as much power gaming as any of the others. And to be honest is just as likely to anger.

In-Character:

Character Name:

Katherine Evelyn Argent

What Race are you? (You may only be Human, Orc, Elf or Dwarf!):

Human

What Sub-Race are you? (note, you aren’t required to have a sub-race):

Biography (Please make this at least 2 paragraphs long. This must include the history of your character and his life as well as age, appearance and personality, etc.):

Raymond Argent thought he was the luckiest man alive, although born from humble beginnings he showed from an early age that he was adept at charm and persuasion. With his angelic looks, and innocent face topped off the with a mop of golden curls it was hard to think of him getting into trouble at all. However if he didn’t seek trouble, although it seemed it sought him and he should have spent a lot of his childhood getting soundly thrashed for one misdemeanour or the other. Yet his father was amazed to see that time and time again it seemed he could talk or persuade his way out of it, with not only humour, but charm as well. Often it seemed coming out of these infractions often rewarded for his actions rather than the punishment he required.

Thoughtful of these obvious talents he did not persuade him to pursue the farming trade as he himself had, but to offer himself as an apprentice to a Master merchant. To not only put his skills to excellent use, but also to gain him a profitable and prestigious career. This was a godsend for the gangly youth and he absorbed knowledge like a sponge. Soon not only learning all his masters secrets and skills, but excelling in them. His profession went from strength to strength till he was a Master himself, owning a lucrative and very profitable business with many contacts and assets. Buying a grand house in Arethor and while out taking his evening constitutional he spied Ariella. With her voluptuous figure, wild cascading auburn hair and snapping brown eyes he decided he had found his true mate.

However Ariella was not easily won, not as placid as women should have been in this time, she challenged him severely. From a very wealthy family herself it didn’t seem to matter to her about Raymond’s wealth and status now, but rather the “scruffy” farm lad he once had been. However she was unprepared for his wit, and persuasive charm and although it took time, and tested him sorely she agreed to be his wife. Things were Idyllic, she stayed at home sewing, painting, arranging flowers. All pursuits that Raymond saw as womanly. While he did the important work of providing. She bore him four sons in quick succession strapping boys it turned out. And while they had passable skills as merchants. Did not have his flair for the persuasive sadly.

Then along came “Katherine” who really put the cat amongst the pigeons. Initially overjoyed at the bold beauty of their new daughter, she shared her Mothers milk pale skin, deep brown doe like eyes and deep auburn locks. As she grew it also became apparent that she had gained other traits from her parents. She had her fathers easy way of falling into troubling situations and causing mischief, without his charm and persuasion to get out of them and temper her. Though this was not actually true. She had the skills no doubt, however she had also inherited Arielle's obstinence and plain speaking. This meant that if “she” didn’t think she had done anything wrong then she sure wasn’t going to apologise for it. She also seemed to be impervious to her Fathers considerable skills, and he found his ways of being able to control situations fell on stony ground.

She found herself that she was often getting soundly thrashed for her temper, attitude and doggedness to adhere to her own idea of what was right and just. This meant that Raymond often came home to a highly agitated wife and a tearful and angry faced daughter. As she grew it got no better either, she didn’t see why she had to be skilled in tapestry, sketching, flower arranging, baking and dress making. These were boring and she mastered them with little fuss. An accomplished rider as a teen she got the biggest beating of her young life when her Father caught her practicing with a sword of all things. Exasperated beyond belief. His wife set down to teach Katherine to read and write, these were things she actively enjoyed and because she mastered them much more quickly than her brothers made her momentarily happy.

Yet Raymond’s problems were far FAR from over. Katherine matured into a boldly beautiful young woman and Raymond knew that he would not have to charm or persuade any suitor to take her.

This was a correct assumption, suitors did indeed approach but Katherine cared little for them, instead much preferring her writing and reading, and now often lost in her own thoughts gazing at passers by out of the windows of their rather grand house. More to the point Katherine didn’t just spurn her suitors, she was also unscrupulously honest as to why, and that didn’t go down at all well. Ariella now grinning to herself imagined she knew what was wrong with her unruly, head strong daughter and sneaked a peak at her journal.

However she couldn’t have been more wrong. Instead of her assumption that Katherine was pining, infatuated by some young man who had yet to approach, she was horrified to read that Katherine had been making a detailed plan to pose as a “Man” of all things and try and pass herself off as a knight. Showing the evidence to her husband, Raymond became shocked and worried for his obviously too strong willed young daughter.

Instead when they next heard of ladies to be chosen for the courts of King Godfrey himself, they dressed her aesthetically, bade her to be on her best behaviour and quietly hoped. Katherine was as surprised as her parents when she was accepted and enjoyed her duties as a woman of the court. As a lady in waiting the activities that she thought would bore her were accepted, in return for being allowed to read much more knowledge and material in the castles great libraries. Also she was a novelty, that she had the ability to read and write. she found to her annoyance that the other women of court didn’t much care for it.

Katherine found she was very fond of King Godfrey and found him very fair and just in his treatments and ideals and was proud and honoured to serve him. However her problems were with the knights of his court. When she found out that ladies in waiting were often gifts to Knights who had proven their worth to his Majesty she was incensed. Did she matter so little ?. She wasted little time in letting them know either way, if there company or favours were not desired by her. This honesty and plain speaking while at first refreshing got quickly tiring for the knights who tried to woo her.King Godfrey was fond of the young woman, now in her twenties but he often despaired when he heard the tales and whispers of his knights. For all her beauty and intelligence she was just too different, too fiery for most of their tastes. Why bother with someone with so much attitude when there were other, equally as lovely women at court with much more amenable personalities.

What are your Character's ambitions?:

Katherine wants to find a use and acceptance as who she is, and not just as a pretty arm ornament for some man who she is probably more intelligent than, and treated little more than a pet. Adept and reading and riding, and very much passable at the “supposed” womanly pursuits she is not unskilled, but her passion and fire make her an un-restful choice for a mate. Especially one who wants someone with a placid and docile nature to compliment their more aggressive and domineering personalities.

Other Information about your Character:

Katherine although a fire cracker and often outspoken is very fair and just, as well as considerate and empathic for those around her. However it takes someone with a lot of patience to bring out or even recognise these qualities. King Godfrey himself see’s them, however he has the wisdom and maturity to recognise this. Where often times his knights are impetuous and full of the vigour of youth to court such patience. Especially when there are plenty more willing females among the courts, more than happy to bare their company.

Katherine stands at a petite 5ft 2, and is very pale skinned with large sherry brown eyes. Her hair is very long and a deep auburn shade that falls round her shoulders. Her clothes are good quality, clean and well kept as befitting her role as a lady in waiting.

Open-Response-Questions

Answer at least three out of five listed!

Whilst traveling from the Cloud Temple you see a small halfling, being harassed by two armed warriors. They appear to be trying to steal money from him, how does your character respond?:

Katherine had spent several happy hours at the great libraries of the great monks of the cloud temple learning more about the history of Asulon, and more importantly the great and holy empire of Oren. Mounted on her bright bay mare Guinevere she was enjoying the ride amongst the sun drenched paths on her way back to Arethor. Her mind was lost in thought, pictures forming in her mind of the great struggles and tribulations of the people. Their bravery, their courage and strength in the face of extreme adversity. She had read of the beauty of Ageis before it’s fall, and of the great crossing when they had to flee the might and evil of Ibless. She shook her head in disgust, she couldn’t understand why people here would worship him....she could share the King’s disquiet at this, she really could. Harsh voices and someone pleading broke her all too swiftly from her reverie.

Looking up and shielding her eyes from the sun, she saw two armed warriors menacing a small halfling. Knowing she should turn the horse round she deliberated on what to do. Should she leave him, should she

try and intervene. However she knew she was not armoured, indeed only had her belt knife for protection. Chiding herself would the brave people of Ageis have made it to these fair shores without fortitude and steel in their backbone. It was just going to take some prior thought is all. She was resourceful, intelligent. She was sure she could find a way out of this. Quickly reaching up, mussing her hair into disarray and pinching her cheeks roughly she bade herself cry.

Kicking her horse forward into a trot, and weeping uncontrollably she began to call in rising panic “Daniel.....Daniel....where are you?”.

Startled the warriors dropped the Halfling who quickly scampered backwards, and looked aghast at the wild woman who rode quickly towards them on her horse...”Please, please!!!” she beseeched!! “Are you guards, my young brother has gone missing. I was meant to meet him at the cloud temple but the monks tell me he set off on his own. Please please help me look”. Fumbling on her belt she threw a laden

purse full of Minas at them. “Here, here....as payment. Please help me search!!”.

Wheeling her horse round she saw the Halfling making his way into the woods, and the warriors were greedily eyeing the coins, she knew now no longer listening to her. Breaking her horse into a canter she made much haste down the path away from them, lest the warriors suddenly come out out of the Minas induced stupor.

Your character wanders into Alras, and comes across a small stall, behind which a well dressed man is standing. He’s offering various wares, the merchant turns to you and says in a posh accent " 'ello there, what can I do you for today?" What is your character response?:

Katherine strolled along the markets of Alras, it was chilly, a crisp and cold day. Her thick cloak was wrapped tightly around her, the hood pulled up covering her flame bright hair. She was browsing the stalls amongst her with much interest. The spices and smells of food, wafting in the air, making her mouth water, and her stomach rumble appreciatively. Hearing an excessive growl issuing from her midriff she laughed suddenly. However it wasn’t time to eat just yet, her impatient stomach would have to wait. She was here shopping for fabrics for a new gown. Up ahead she could see gaily coloured fabrics blowing in a swift breeze and made her way towards it with quick light steps.

Gazing at the myriad shades of velvet, linen and silks, she stroked them softly with her fingertips, as the Merchant bustled over and said in plumy posh tones.

“Ello There, what can I do for you?”

Katherine eyed him, and while she knew that he was probably a contact or at least an acquaintance of her Father as his wares were such high quality, she didn’t want to drawn attention to the fact that she

was his daughter. Maybe she could get herself a good bargain herself. Taking hold of a bolt of deep green velvet shot through with threads of gold, she held it up to the merchant to show her interest.

“What about this?, what is it cost good merchant?” she asked with a raise of her delicate eyebrows, and a charming smile...

“Oh that’s beautiful cloth, feel the nap, the thickness, the quality....” The Merchant said in the wheedling tones of someone trying to extract the maximum amount of minas for his wares.

“That’s genuine gold shot through there!” he continued, eyeing her with a practiced eye he leered. “With your colouring, that wonderful hair you are trying to hide....why it would make a fabulous dress!!”

Tucking the errant hair back into her hood she grinned at his persuasive attitude, she had heard this many times before. Sucking air in her teeth and schooling her face into a mask of displeasure...

“Hmmmmm how much is it then, is it overpriced due to it’s great....quality???”

“Oh no Ma’am....it’s very reasonable, I always strike the best bargains!” The Merchant stated loftily. “It’s a very reasonable 300 minas a length...”

“300 Minas a length but if I need several that will be quite a cost, it would need to be ALL real gold to sanction such cost” Katherine stated stoutly....”And here...” Holding it up to the light she inspected it closely...”isn’t there some separation of the dye here?”

The merchant gulped suddenly, glancing around to see if anyone had heard, blanching slightly. “No, no....dear lady. It’s merely the shadows cast by my stalls canopy, how about I call it 200 minas per length it

you buy in excess of 3 lengths?”

Smiling suddenly, and taking her belt pouch she emptied the correct number of coins into his out stretched hand. “Good man you have got yourself a deal!!” she exclaimed with great cheer.

The merchant wrapped the cloth carefully, and handed it to Katherine with a flourish. Nodding her head at him in acknowledgement of a barter well fought, she smiled with real warmth, before making her

way into the hustle and bustle of the market place once more.

Whilst wandering in the wilds, your character comes across a small hut, which looks abandoned. Inside it you see a chest containing a few iron bars, and a golden sword. How would your character respond?:

*missed*

Hungry and lost in the wilderness, you stumble across a small trading camp nestled among the forest, they greet you you in the common tongue, how do you respond?:

Katherine rode heavily through the forests, the tree’s and branches whipping heavily past her. Exhilarated she leant forward patting Guinevere's neck affectionately and encouragingly. The sun was drawing

lower in the sky and she knew her trip to the market had kept her much later than she had really anticipated. Knowing there were many dangers inerrant in the woods, and knowing that the court it’s self would be worried if she did not return before nightfall, she had no choice but spur her mount to go faster.

Suddenly her horse lost it’s footing and nearly stumbled, however the debris had made it throw a shoe. Katherine dismounted and spat a ripe curse as she inspected Guinevere’s foot. Walking her around it

was clear that her mount was also now lame due to the stumble and unable to carry her. Leading her and stroking her nose consolingly she made her way through the forest, hoping that she would make her

way to one of the main roads soon, before darkness really took hold.

The darker it got the clearer it became to Katherine that she was no where near the roads, and what’s more she couldn’t recognise any landmarks at all, in fact nothing looked familiar at all. Swallowing her panic she tried to hurry herself and Guinevere hoping that she would find something she would recognise soon. Through the tree’s up a head she saw light filtering through and hurriedly made her way towards it. As she entered the clearing, she heard laughter and chatter, it was a trading caravan that was setting up camp for the night.

“Hello there...” she called tentatively, leading her lame mount into the light of the fire. “My horse threw a shoe, and is now lame, and I became lost in the woods in my panic"!”.

The head trader came forward and wiped his hands hurriedly on his smock as they were grubby from setting up the tents. “Lady...please come forward and warm yourself by the fire, where were you travelling to?”.

Katherine shook her head ruefully, pushing her hood back and sighing....”I was trying to make Arethor before nightfall, fool hardy I know, however I seem to have taken a wrong turn in the woods!”.

The trader smiled reassuringly. “Dear Lady you are not far from your course at all, let Darius our Ostler and Farrier! have a look at your mount. He is very gifted at cold shoeing as we have to travel far and wide to ply our wares!, so our own beasts of burden are very valuable to us!!”

Katherine smiled gratefully and with relief as she watched a swarthy man walk towards Guinevere and bend to check her hoof. Walking gracefully forwards she crouched beside the fire extending her hands towards it to warm them. As one of the trader women handed her a flagon of milk and some bread and cheese she smiled in thanks, and indicated to the head Trader that she was more than willing to reimburse them for their help, services and hospitality, as she placed a purse of minas by her plate and settled down to enjoy the heat.

You hear word that bandits occupy the road outside the town in which you have been staying. The town guard have gathered, and are asking for assistance to help eliminate them. The leader of the party is offering a reward for any who offer their support. How does your character act on this information?:

*missed*

N.B I have alerted and talked over this character with Mogroka, and he may at ANY time alter and tweak her Biography as he see's fit. Katherine was created with the sole purpose of adding more RP to the Oren Empire as well as The Intrepid Society seven man contingent.

I also want to apologise to the App Team for posting this prematurely as I was copying it over from the word document. It's hard to concentrate and pop chocolate treats in a childs mouth who is doing a baby bird impression by your elbow. Many apologise, please feel free to slap me with a wet kipper.

*hugs*
