The Salty Salmon fast travel

As of late there has been much debate over the usage of the Salty Salmon fast travel system we have in place, and have had in place for a few months, however recently it was shut down, a hole emerged in it's barnacle-crusted hull and thus had to be put out of use until someone could fix it. Unfortunately, not many people have been RPing the breakage and have been coming to and from the Vale by jumping over the restrictions and taking the boat anyway.

Which is why I decided the people of the Vale should decide whether to keep the fast travel or get rid of it for a time. The pros and cons for this are as folllows:

Pros for keeping the Salty Salmon fast travel:

- Brings more people to RP with in the Vale, as the saying goes, 'the more the merrier', and fun and interesting roleplay can amount from meeting these strangers.

- Creates an easy and free way for Halflings to come to the Vale and occasionally leave if they so choose.

- If it did not exist then some Halflings may get bored and frustrated of the long and treacherous walk to the Vale and our population would decrease.

- It is a fun concept that has further potential in the future.

- Due to it's small size, orcs and armoured people are unable to use it at all, therefore keeping out nasty folk that intend to kill/eat us.

- Makes for easier trade with people, the Vale obtains materials that we might never obtain elsewhere.

- New Halflings can find the Vale easily, creating an ever growing population of fun people to sustain roleplay and for Branborough to thrive.

Cons for keeping the Salty Salmon fast travel:

- Although armoured people and orcs cannot use the boat, this rule is frequently broken by people that break RP and do not have a care for the secrecy or culture of the Halflings.

- Not having the fast travel protects us from people that will come here to do us harm, especially after Johndo was eaten by orcs and made into stew, we could be targeted.

- The Salty Salmon detracts from the out-of-the-way atmosphere the Vale has, a unique atmosphere of being secluded and peaceful from the rest of the world.

If there are any points I have missed feel free to add them in a comment, everyone's opinion is welcome here, Halfling or not. Comment with what you think!

"Oi say we keep it!"

((the salty salmon has been the most convenient thing in existence for me as I have many alts and this is a quick way to get to my favorite roleplay spot. Please do not get rid of it.))

((In my View you need to make it very clear that bandits, Orcs, or anyone that wants to hurt up CANT Go on this Ship Put up A bilion Sign make tons of consiquencies anything to just say STAY OUT to all who come to harm. I think that we should keep it))

(( I agree with keeping the Salty Salmon.

Daeon - The reason Orcs aren't supposed to come is because of their weight. The Salty Salmon is much too small for a band of Orcs to row their way all the way to one of the Southernmost civilizations, the Halflings.

We could always warn against bandits, but since they might be humans, Elves, and whatnot, they would have the ability to sneak on the boat.

We DO need a sign that says, "This boat is much too small to support an Orc's weight." I believe. ))

Well right now no one is supposed to be using the boat in RP. It's not a terrible crime if you are a halfling, but when we encountered some orcs despite the fact that I boarded up the sides of the boat and took away the walking plank at the other end, that's not cool.

One solution might be to have a locked door on the other side (as well as ensuring that it is 100% impossible to jump and get through).

((I don't know I almost like the thought of the hafling community being more secluded from the humans orcs and whatnot. If we could set up a way for new haflings to get here when they first come into the world that would be great. For now since we don't have that I suppose I'll have to lean twords keeping it just so we can get them here without trouble. Another thing about the haflings not being able to travel back to the temple and to other places is that, I thought haflings weren't supposed to like traveling and preferred to stay in their peaceful towns but maybe I'm wrong))

((I say we keep it, though we need to find a way to make sure orcs won't abuse it, as they have in the past, and I have been eaten for this reason. The only way they can come is by foot, and even then they wouldn't know the exact location.

Back to the boat though, it has greatly improved the Vale as we always have new people coming and creating interesting rp, it is fun, and convenient as people don't need to walk a long way as stated in the op. The abuse of the boat even when it is closed can be solved, so yes, keep the boat))

((How about the boat only comes a few times each month? possibly correspoding with festivals? we could lock up the fast travel area when the salty salmon is undergoing 'repairs' in the off seasons, I hardly believe that if this was real, a single boat can't go back and forth, hundreds of times in a week, without something breaking on it. Too bad we can't have someone stay on the salty salmon 24/7 to bring people to the vale, if we had a real person, Orcs wouldn't break the rule.

Another Option is maybe instead of having the salty salmon in the dock area, it could be a bit away in a secluded dock? You would have to either know a halfling in character or be a halfling in order to know where it is? Kinda like with the new dwarven capital?))

I like the idea of needing to know someone who will tell you where The Vale is. It keeps it a very exclusive place. That being said, if it weren't for the Salty Salmon, I would have never, ever found The Vale, so there would have to be a viable alternative.

((I wouldn't mind having my character be a boat master or someone who lives out side of the vale and guides new Halflings to the Vale, But I don't know when I will get MineCraft, and this problem should be solved soon...))

I think the boat should go. My reasonings for this are ;

Back in Aegis , Dunwood was a very exclusive place. People genuinly didnt really know how to find it and I loved it like that. At the start of Asulon , when I really got into Halflings , it was the same. It was almost like a test , you had to find Branborough and I always thought that finding the true home of the Halflings was the first step in proving yourself in order to get a burrow [ I also still believe people should have to really prove themselves for a burrow , but that's getting off topic ;) ] , since only true halflings could find it.

Yes , it brings more halflings since it's easier to get to , but I still think the boat should only be there for festivals and during times when it is not a festival , the boat is shut completely, like 100% impossible to board. Our main recruitment times for getting halflings were usually meant to be at festivals anyway , when we show off how good it is to be a halfling and give numerous reasons for playing one.

Lastly , Halflings arent born travellers they are quite content when they reach their true home , Branborough. They shouldnt really want to go out and explore everything , for they keep themselves , to themselves. Or that's how I always percieved it.

One last thing about putting signs up. You can put up all the signs you want about the boat being far to small to support orcs or people in full armour , but it does not mean they will choose to read any of them.

If we lock the boat and make it completely impossible to use without the key and only gave the key to those who have walked there the first time, we could have a win-win scenario. If you do the work, you get it easy next time

I do like that idea.
