The Family Silas

By: Bobert082885

A lost soul, a vagabond, a humbled warrior, a hero. Allister Silas was an old man when he first came to Asulon from Aegis and older still when he joined the Rangers of the Forest. Many of the younger Rangers would tell him that he was too old to join. Allister however, kept up with the strongest of the bunch, never the best, but better than most. He lived up to his name, Allister which meant protector of mankind; and Silas, which meant forest dweller. He would spend his days patrolling roads and forests with his fellow Rangers, protecting all who travelled these places. Allister had a son with a woman he rescued from some thieves one night. She gave birth to a baby boy, who Allister named Allard. Allister and the other Rangers lived off of the land, hunting and setting traps for their food. Allard would be taught all of this as he grew into a man. Allister stayed with the Rangers until his wife passed on. After that Allister's body seemed to start falling apart. Old injuries started to hurt again, he started to become weak and his back began to hunch. Then one day, he left the Ranger camp with his son. The Rangers never seen Allister or his son again.

Allard was a famous hunter who lived in the town of Solace many, many years ago. Allard was a tall man, strong and proud. He was a man of the wilds. He knew nothing as a boy but the trees, grass, plants and animals that dwelled around him. Allard moved to Solace with his father he became too old and battered from his life as a Ranger to continue. They lived well. Allard was a great hunter and always managed to bring home enough minas to survive, and they never asked for any more than that. Although life in the city was good, Allard always dreamed of being outside of the city gates. He didn't like the sounds and smells of civilization. Every night when he came home from a hunt he would wait anxiously for the next day to go on another. One day though Allard's father died. He went to sleep one night and just didn't wake up. Allard had seen many Rangers die at the hands of bandits and seen many more bandits killed by the Rangers. He was simply thankful that the merciful God allowed his father to live such a long life. Allister had taught Allard about Aeriel when he was a young boy and Allard always believed.

With his father dead and nothing to keep him in Solace Allard left, heading north along the coast. It was here that Allard felt at home. It was here that he was able to feel like himself. Like he was free. Allard fed himself with the plants and animals he would come by. He would wash himself in the streams and ponds and he prayed occasionally to God, for guidance and to be shown a path or given a purpose. He was a Puritarianist just like his father, one of an ancient and dying religion. God heard Allard's prayers, but would wait for the right time to answer him.

Early one morning Allard was still asleep, in a meadow underneath a big oak tree. He was suddenly woken from his sleep as he heard a rustling of bushes. He stood up fast grasping his sword tightly. A pig came rushing through the bush. Snorting and squealing in fear he rushed past Allard, as fast as a pig can go. Then just as Allard was about to let his guard down he heard another rustle, from the same direction as the first. Something was following the pig, it must be a wolf Allard thought and his grip on his sword tightened once more. The bush right in front of Allard shook and rustled. Then the great and merciful God sent his answer, one that Allard could not ignore. Her name was Moriah, which means ordained by God. She was a tall slender elf. She was stunning and her beauty captured his soul. Her hair was yellow as the sun. She stopped and looked in surprise at the dirty man standing before her. Allard simply froze, he had never witnessed such beauty. Moriah and Allard's meeting was fate, it was destined and both of them fell in love with each other on the spot.

Allard and Moriah were wed in secret and they both traveled together until they came to the Cloud Temple Forest. It was here that they settled down, where they built a home and had a child. Allard had found his purpose. To be a father, a protector and provider. He was ecstatic about Moriah having his baby. Some people judged them for their love, others supported it. But none the less, whatever or however others viewed it, it did not change how they felt.

Moriah suddenly became ill. She began to throw up. She started to lose weight. She had contracted a sickness that would soon kill her. She was afraid, not that she would die, but that the baby may. Allard tried every remedy, every herb, every potion. Nothing worked, she became more and more ill as the pregnancy went on. Then, on Ahad of the Second Seed and on the 28th year, she gave birth to a boy, a boy who she named Ackerley. Shortly after giving birth she died. Leaving Allard holding his newborn child in one hand and his dead wife in the other. Allard was filled with both sorrow and joy. He carried Moriah's body back to the meadow where they had first met and buried her under the old oak tree he had been sleeping under. Then he sat, with his son in his arms and a tear ran down his cheek.

All things happen for a reason, that is what my father taught me. Yeah, all things happen for a reason...

My name is Ackerley Silas. I was born on Ahad of the Second Seed in the 28th year. My mother died giving birth to me, my father never truly knew what from. I only asked one time, when I was seven years old I had a dream. At the time the only other person I knew was my father. I had never seen a woman before... but somehow I dreamt of one. She told me she was my mother and that she loved me. I didn't know her, but, I felt nothing but love when she told me that and my heart burst into flame. I awoke in a cold sweat, then softly drifted back to sleep. The next morning I asked my father who my mother was. That was when he told me she died giving birth to me. Then I asked him why she died, and he said "Son, your mother and I wanted to have you so much, you know? We could not wait. She so loved the thought of you, and when you started to kick! Oh, you should have seen the way she smiled! She was an elf, elves have so much love, but they're magic too. I think son, that she loved you so much, she put all of her energy and compassion into you. She gave you everything she had. That is why you are who you are, that's why you're so special Ackerley." My father continued to tell me that she named me Ackerley because her and my father first fell in love in a meadow of oak trees. Ackerley means, dweller at the acre meadow.

I can still remember the first time he took me hunting. I wouldn't stop messing around and scared off everything my father tried to catch. I thought it was fun, that was until I was told it was time to head home and we hadn't caught a thing. My father and I went hungry that night, yet he never yelled or even got mad in the slightest. I swore from then on I'd be obedient and do as my father asked. I learned to use the bow and immediately loved it, it felt like it was a part of me. My father was always impressed by my accuracy and he said I got it from my mother. He was always good with a bow and a great hunter, but he would always say "You should have seen your mother hunt!"

I was seventeen when my father died. He went east to hunt in the Mallowlyn Woodlands. He fell victim to a bandit attack, I told him he was going out far too late. He managed to kill one of the men who had attacked him, but the other had followed him back without my father knowing. By the time I rushed out to my father’s aid and laid him in his bed my front door was being kicked in. The second bandit rushed in screaming for my father. My father grabbed me and told me what must be done. I was frightened, but still I stood ready. I had never killed anything before. The man burst into my father's room. I drew the string of the bow as the man let out a roar of anger. "ROOOAAAA-" his scream was cut short by a Thud! As my arrow pierced the side of his skull. I ran to my father's side, he was silent and had stopped breathing. He was dead and had gone to be with mother. So I took his sword and left.

I left the cloud temple forest, and traveled far to the west until I was lost. Until I seen no man, woman or child. I was filled with sorrow and pain, and I began to search for purpose. I struggled to believe that which my father had always told me... everything happens for a reason. I traveled alone for seven years, and on the 52nd year of the First Seed I seen my mother for the second time. I slept in the sands on the beach and that night she came to me in a dream. She told me to pray to God. She told me to ask him to guide me. She said that all of this world was given to us by the Creator. Then, once again I awoke in a cold sweat, and then softly drifted back to sleep.

The next day I asked God to help me, I prayed to him for guidance and promised to protect all life I encountered. That was when I got a strange urge... one that defied my very essence. I felt compelled to head east, back towards Cloud Temple, back to where I tried so hard to get away from.

I travelled east until I reached the hills and valleys of Lakemere. I sat and took a rest by one of the many streams that flowed through the beautiful terrain. I sat and pondered all that had happened in the last several years of my life. Memories of my past were flashing through my mind, my first few hunting expeditions, my first kill, but mostly, my father's death. I also thought of my mother and how I wished I could have met her, even just once. I was resting by the stream and thinking so long that it began to get dark, so I decided to settle down for the night. The next morning I wandered off, further east and ever closer to my destination. I was approaching the Mystic Mountains of Aquila when I seen a young man being harassed by several bandits. Bandits killed my father years ago. I felt so much pain when they took him from me, but that sorrow that I had felt years ago has since grown into hatred.

I didn't even say a word. I simply stormed towards the bandits, with my father's sword already drawn. I wasn't as good of a swordsman as my father, but my vengeful hate for the bandits had gotten the best of me. One of the bandits turned to see me approach. He began to ask me what I thought I was doing or something, but before he could finish I drove my father's sword right into his gut. He gurgled and choked as his two friends advanced towards me. I began to fall back, two men at once was going to be no easy fight. One of them swung a heavy axe downwards on me, but I was quick enough to get out of the way. I turned and punched the man across his jaw and he stumbled to the left. This gave me just enough time to stab him quickly in his side before his friend had a chance to jump around him. But my father's sword got stuck in the man's side. It was an old sword and I had not kept it sharp. Before I knew it the other man was right over top of me, his sword coming down on my face. I let go of my father's sword as quickly as I could and dropped backwards. The tip of his sword dug into the left side of my forehead and dragged its way down, over my eye and out my cheek. "ARGH!" I screamed, grasping the side of my face. Blood was gushing down my face, my shirt was soaked with it. The man tried one more time to deliver the last killing blow, but was stopped as my father's sword tore through the front of his leather jerkin. The man they had been trying to rob had come to my aid and killed the last bandit.

The man took me to his home, I had blacked out from blood loss and almost died. I was blind in my left eye, I had no depth perception and was afraid I would never shoot my bow again. I no longer have the vision I once had. With the bleeding stopped I headed eastward again, towards Cloud Temple, towards my destiny. I wandered through the Western Cloud Temple Forest and thought about what I would find at the temple. What did Aeriel have in store for me when I got there?

As I crossed the long stone overpass towards the Cloud Temple I began to feel weak. As I approached the sanctuary my legs got sore and I suddenly had to stop, so I sat down and waited. I knew that what I had come for would soon be here, I got no messages, no signs... I just knew.

Several days past, the monks were kind enough to feed me while I waited and prayed. Then, as if someone had grabbed either side of my face and forcibly lifted it upwards my vision was centred on the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Her eyes were as blue as the sky on a clear cloudless day. Her hair was the color of the earth, dark and brown. She was rugged looking and only a little shorter than I. She looked strong, yet it felt like I could see her every weakness. She approached me with a worried look on her face and I could see suffering in her eyes. She seemed to know where she was going, but wasn't sure about what she was doing. Someone gave me a push again and suddenly I was up and on my feet. I stood before her and bowed. I don't know why. I just did.

We talked for a long time, she told me her name. It was Verya Tawariell, a beautiful name. She told of what had lead her here. I in return, told her my story. It was as if we were meant for each other, like we had to lose everything to find each other. We decided that we would go together from here on out.

And this is where the real story begins...

Other Information about your Character: Ackerley is unsure as to what the future holds for him at the moment. I didn't want him to enter this world with a prefabricated dream, I wanted him to experience the server and decide what would be best for himself as he develops and becomes a more realistic part of your world.

Open-Response-Questions

Each and every question must be answered with a minimum of a single full paragraph and entirely in RP.

Whilst traveling from the Cloud Temple you see a small halfling, being harassed by two armed warriors. They appear to be trying to steal money from him, how does your character respond? I was on my way home from Cloud Temple after stopping to pay my respects to Aeriel. On my way home I was stopped by a familiar sight. Two men were stopped in the middle of the road standing over a much shorter person, about the height of a child. They seemed to be harassing the small person, they were bandits and I could tell from the look of them. Mostly from the way they spoke. Harsh and forceful.

I stopped several tens of meters away and yelled to the men "You there, if you value your lives I advise you leave that person alone!" they stopped immediately and turned towards me. They didn't seem scared, so I decided to fire a warning shot. My aim was dead on, but they took my warning shot for a misfire and began to chuckle amongst themselves. "You missed!" I heard one of them yell. "I didn't miss at all." I replied.

The first one to begin his approach towards me was the first to be slain. The men had thought I was a poor shot. I would show them just how good I could shot. I pulled another arrow and shot, the arrow stuck into the mans shin and he dropped in pain. "The next arrow will be the last I need to fire if you continue this nonsense!" The second man quickly ran off into the bushes. I would let him go for now, I am tired and only want to rest. I simply walked on leaving the man lying on the road trying to yank the arrow from his leg. The small person tried to thank me as I walked past, but I cut him off and said to him "You should be more careful. Someone might not show up next time this happens."

Your character wanders into Alras, and comes across a small stall, behind which a well dressed man is standing. He’s offering various wares, the merchant turns to you and says in a posh accent " 'ello there, what can I do you for today?" What is your character response? After a long day of hunting I had began to travel eastward towards Alras, I wanted to sell some of what I had to buy something nice for my dearest Verya. I wandered into Alras and had no trouble selling the large animal I had just killed. I made a decent amount of minas, and began searching for something Verya would enjoy. While wandering the market I came to a stall with a well dressed man selling assorted wares. Wonderful gems, clothing, jewelry and books. I looked for a while but found nothing I thought she would like. I apologized to the merchant and told him that I'm afraid he has nothing I thought she would be interested in. So I left Alras to head home back to Verya and on the way I seen what I had been looking for. Sitting in a field to the south was a patch of beautiful flowers... just what she would want. I picked one and continued home with a smile across my face.

Whilst wandering in the wilds, your character comes across a small hut, which looks abandoned. Inside it you see a chest containing a few iron bars, and a golden sword. How would your character respond?:While out hunting one night I came across an old abandoned hut in the forest. I could tell it was abandoned, there were holes in the walls and it looked like there had been a fire here at one point or another. I figured I'd head in to take a look around. Maybe there was something I could use? As I searched through the rubble that lay scattered on the floor of the hut I came across a chest. One that was not damaged, or locked. I opened the chest and to my surprise there was sever iron ingots inside as well as a beautifully crafted golden sword. Since no one was obviously using this stuff I figured I'd at least take the iron ingots. Might be able to fix up my father's sword a little with it. The golden sword though, however nice, was not the sort of thing I was interested in. I had my father's sword and it was all I had ever needed.

Hungry and lost in the wilderness, you stumble across a small trading camp nestled among the forest, they greet you you in the common tongue, how do you respond? one day while out hunting I was attacked by the largest wolf I'd ever seen. He was quiet and took me by surprise. He had attacked from behind and though I managed to jump out of the way the wolf took off with my quiver... leaving me with no arrows. With no bow I was forced to go home hungry. However on my way home I came across a small trading camp, they greeted me politely and welcomed me in. I was hungry and could see they had lots of food, they were also in the middle of setting up. I offered to help set up their trading camp in return for a meal. They accepted the offer and I occasionally return to this very camp to trade with the traders here.

You hear word that bandits occupy the road outside the town in which you have been staying. The town guard have gathered, and are asking for assistance to help eliminate them. The leader of the party is offering a reward for any who offer their support. How does your character act on this information?: I approach the guards and offer to lend a hand. They gladly accept the help and inform me that a reward is in it for me if I do. The guards were young men and I could see that they had not seen much battle. I was still quite young myself, but I knew bandits well. I have dealt with them many times before during my life and this would be no different. We quickly dispatched the bandits, but when I was offered the reward I simply refused and continued on.

Anything else you would like to say?: Ackerley's description is available in JamminJenn's application... likewise her description is available in my application. Her application will be available shortly. Thank you for your time.

Your application has been...

Accepted!

Just... wow. Easily one of the top three applications I've ever accepted. I'm blown away by the tremendous effort you've put into this application and the careful research you've clearly done into the server. I definitely hope your travels with Jenn are fruitful and time on LOTC long.

The only thing I have to caution you on is that your Out-Of-Character definition is off. OOC simply refers to you as a person and what you do, not your character and what they do when you play as them In-Character. But this detail means nothing compared to the rest of the application.

Welcome to Asulon! Please wait patiently for a GM to whitelist you.
