Once More Unto the Breach

An old, frail man sits in a chair, watching the water under the Temple lap on the dock. With a sigh, he thinks back on his life.

His earliest memories were of the Cloud Temple. Aegis. Oren, and Al-Kahazar. Queen Dawn's Bakery. Elaine, Lex. His first friends in this world. Things were peaceful.

The Undead. Protecting Her Majesty as they first arrived. Armed with nothing but an iron blade and leather boots.

Winterfall. Bell. Assaulting the Fort. Defending the city from the Undead themselves. Failing miserably, and only barely escaping out of a burning tavern.

The War. Fighting on many fronts, always eventually being forced to retreat. Only able to win battles because of the Ascended.

The man winces to himself.

The Verge. A brave new world, quickly destroyed by those quick enough to rip the land of its resources. No point in opening it.

Exodus. Fighting the Undead back, away from the boats. Watching the land die as we left. Weeping for lost friends.

Arrival. Asulon. Wandering the land, starving with a party of others. Finding the new temple.

Peace. The farm. Gwonam. Healing Wounds. Being part of a family.

Love. Yahra. A new life. A true chance. The rose.

Betrayal. Losing everything. Forced to fight again. Going farther than he ever had.

The End. Dueling with beasts beyond comprehension. Gaining nothing in the end.

The man opens his eyes, and looks behind him. A young dark-elf woman stands behind him. He smiles. "Come, Sen. Listen to a tale. A tale of your father, and of me."

Passing the Torch.

After telling his tale, and the things he had learned, he gives a final gift to the woman. His strength, the fire that kept him living throughout these years.

The man smiles one last smile, then takes a well-needed rest in his chair.

(And, that's it. The End of Shuness. My first perma-death. Now, I begin work on my next character. Should be up in the next few days.)
