Buddylist Mechanics

I understand that this isn't the most specific but... how does the buddylist work?

 

How does it store the buddylists? Does it load the respective file as they log in? Is everyone in a massive database? Individual? Are the buddylists loaded once and stored in a massive array and then unloaded?

 

I was talking with Telanir in the help chat but he left before I could absolutely BOMBARD him with questions. I thought here would be a good place to ask, since its more accessible to everyone.
