NASTASIYA REZA VAS RUTHERN Daughter of Princess Maya of Haense and Dmitry var Ruthern 1874 - 1928 "Afraid of death? Why would I be afraid of death?" A young Nastasiya queried boldly, her brows furiously knitting together as she evidently detested such an accusation. With unbridled anger that typically came with her age, she charged forth to clash her longsword against her opponent’s- as if she were attempting to make him retract his statement. "Because you fight like you are scared," A pale boy quipped in response, thrusting his own sword forth to deflect her strike with ease. He was younger, but more experienced in the field of swordsmanship- therefore stronger than her, something Nastasiya would never admit even on her own deathbed. The Ruthern hesitated, apparently his words had struck a chord. The boy took no mercy on her though, in her moment of weakness he extended his foot to kick her shin, sending her flailing body into the ground. Her sword clattered to the ground next to her, the world spiraling around as she was sent into a daze. The hazy shadow of the blonde’s figure loomed over her, kneeling to offer a hand, “Why do you keep fighting?” No response emitted from the grounded girl, her verdant eyes rolling into the back of her head as the world warped and went black. . . The old and withered Nastasiya was torn from another feverish dream, one out of the series of them where she was in the prime of her youth once more. The throbbing pain in the back of her head lingered and the ache in her heart resumed once more. So many dreams, yet all of them were memories of those who were no longer with her- splotched and incomprehensible like parchment ruined by spilled ink. A quivering palm raised to place itself over her heart, which fluttered at the mere reminiscence. The elderly woman was not as alone in the world as she felt though. She proudly mothered seven well-achieved kids, and frequently served her signature cookies to eight adoring grandchildren. Though for Nastasiya, that wasn’t enough. From a young age she had always been ambitious, with aspirations to become a knight- only to be crippled at the age of seventeen. Ever since that incident, she had always held a muted bitterness in her heart for the world. Despite being raised in a household where the virtues of GODAN were held above all, Nastasiya could not help but believe GOD had some participation in her unraveling. With some struggle and a bit of wheezing, she heaved herself upright to gaze out the window. It was a lovely landscape that looked over the lands of Vaska, but nothing like home. For a little over five decades of life, Nastasiya found herself in a quaint home in Valwyck- the same place where she had moved in as a little girl, the same place where she and her siblings would play, the same place where she found her first love, the place where she had raised her kids.. And the place she thought she would die in. The world had other plans of course, and she found herself in a new world– Aevos. Part of her yearned for a hero's death that might’ve been rewarded by recklessly charging into the Mori chaos, a death that would’ve satisfied her younger self, but she was unable to build up the courage required for it. Why of all times, why was she so scared to die now– when there was nothing left to lose? Before, she was ready to risk it all with her comrades… all of whom are dead now. She helplessly sunk back into bed and turned her palened face towards the hearth in search of an answer. Above the fireplace was a portrait of her daughter and her own family of Ivanovich, Nastasiya’s legacy. A faint smile appeared on the wings of her lips, emphasizing the traces of wrinkles that inhabited her visage, in that moment… she had forgotten her previous sorrows and was blissful. Why do you keep fighting? The question rang loudly in her ears, the voice of her childhood best friend and lifetime lover. It was true, she had been fighting all along- though not the kind that involves a sword. She had spent a lifetime mourning over the thought of what could’ve been, that she never got to enjoy the present, which left her behind just like that. It was time to move on… time for the fighting to cease. Nastasiya realized that she was actually blessed to have never become a soldier because it was true, she was a coward, she spent a lifetime blindly running; but now it was over. She clutched at her chest once more, this time feeling for a golden cross that had always adorned her neck- gifted to her by the late Princess Maya of Haense, her mother. Just for a moment- that perfect moment- the sun casted into the Vaskan Keep, shrouding the old woman in light. An eerie chill was momentarily ceased by a blanket of warmth that felt like an embrace, “It is time, mamej… Let me say the prayers for once, Maya…” She murmured contentedly, her dainty eyelashes fluttering shut. There would be no more fear. EPILOGUE In the vast emptiness of darkness behind her eyelids, she felt a falling sensation. Desperately, she reached up, feeling that somebody was there- an all too familiar feeling. A bronze hand emerged and pulled her up. The sun was above and bright, coarse sand gritted under the surface of her boots and suddenly she was back in the Colosseum of Haense in Almaris, “Vy must have hit vyr head too hard.” Beyond her squinted eyes Nastasiya spied the person speaking to her, a fellow comrade from her youth- that had been somehow lost over the years. Her eyes broadened with disbelief and her heart might’ve stopped if there was a pulse to inhibit in the first place, “Nie… niet possible,” The Ruthern said playfully, going along with the strange scene, joyously sweeping her forgotten sword off the ground, “Where are the others? Where are Magnus, Loran and Georgie?” Her sparring partner shook her head, a reassuring yet amused smile taking its place upon her tender countenance, “It’s niet their turn yet,” She stated ominously whilst taking on a practical fighting stance, the tip of her sword tauntingly pointing at the brash Nastasiya- whom was brimmed with newfound energy. “Ea’ll catch them later then,” The Ruthern declared, brushing the thought off before eagerly hopping into the spar, an activity she hadn’t been able to participate in since seventeen years of age. The citizens of the Petra, much like a majority of the world, have been hard at work to build a new land to sustain future generations to come. When the Archduchess Renilde I first stepped foot onto the lands that would be dubbed as property of the Petra. The first seeds of the nation were sowed into the vast fields that surround the city of Vallagne. For days, the citizens watched and carefully tended the fields of the Petra, anxious whether the seeds would germinate in foreign soil. When the first sprout was reported, joy broke out. For the following months, farmers cultivated more and more of the surrounding land until a healthy surplus of crops was produced. While a majority of the crop was distributed throughout Petra and to Her citizens, much still remained. To celebrate such a success achieved in hardly a year, the River Court suggested that a festival would be deemed proper for such an occasion; to not only celebrate such fertile soil and its offspring, but to a safe voyage from the old world to the new and to the individuals that have made the name ‘The Commonwealth of the Petra’ possible. Reformed by Justine Margaux Aldersberg Every respectable sovereign has a court of their own, promoting culture and arts among the people of the realm. It has been over forty years since the first variation of the River Court was established by the late Archduchess Carolina, and it has slowly progressed since then. The resignation of the last Chamberlain, Dame Anne de Vilain, and the invasion of Almaris led to a temporary yield in the progress of courtly culture. But with a new continent shall come a new era, as many refugees of all backgrounds seek sanctuary in the Petra, the Petran culture is expected to adapt and flourish with the establishment of a new court. PURPOSE The River Court serves as a beacon of culture for the society of Petra. While the Court wishes to preserve past values such as an enlightened mind and intrigue, there is a reemerging push for entertainment. Knowledge, culture and etiquette shall be cultivated alongside the presence of elaborate festivity. The minds of the youth shall be enriched with the opportunity to ward under the educated nobility, and the society of Petra shall flourish with the aid of the River Court and Her courtiers. COURTIERS Any who wish to learn the Petrine customs and educate themselves on the various arts of the Commonwealth are welcome to be part of the courts as a courtier. The courtiers tend to have little to no responsibility, aside from attending Court, unless they choose to take on a role or project. Those who do fill a position in the Petran Court are expected to fulfill the responsibilities that correspond with their selected role. The Court is ever changing, and due to this there is constantly an addition of roles or an open position, if there is one that interests you… contact the Chamberlain! COURT CHAMBERLAINE [ @sondher ] The Court Chamberlaine is seen as the head of the Courts. They report directly to the Archduchess and are tasked with the management of the Courts. As the Chamberlaine oversees the day-to-day practices within the court, they also must ensure that they are performed properly. She guides the education of the court’s wards and has the final word on all courtly decisions. COURT DEPUTY [ Vacant ] A Court Deputy serves as the right-hand to the Court Chamberlaine, often taking on the more tedious tasks of the Chamberlaine such as arranging projects and overseeing the work of the courtiers. They are tasked with intermittent checks on the education of all wards within the realm and setting the standard for their education along the will of the Chamberlaine. POET LAUREATE [ @slattador ] The Court Poet is responsible for teaching the art of Poetry. Usually, a former Courtier who studied under the past Court Poets is chosen for such a job and they will teach the generation to come. The Court Poet also writes poetry for the Commonwealth, usually for the Courts and society to enjoy. CHIEF ARCHIVIST [ @Smol] The Chief Archivist is among the most important positions of the Petrine Courts. They are tasked with the responsibility to manage the libraries and ensure Her history and records are preserved and taught among Her people. One is entrusted with a great task when appointed to this position as the safety of the Petran history is within their hands. As such they usually serve till death. COURT DRAMATURGE [ @Orlesian ] The Court Dramaturge is responsible for teaching and organizing the Court Theater. They are in charge of writing, passing and managing the theater scene, which includes running security checks on the Theater of Petra. COURT ARTISAN [ Vacant ] The Court Artisan is incharge of all subjects and matters related to the arts, such as painting, dance and music. They are also responsible for the curation of noble and historical portraits, and documents pertaining to music. The individual who fills this role should be creative and passionate on the subject of the arts, willing to share their knowledge to the citizens of the Petra. COURT ‘FOOL’ [ @SortedJarhead ] The COURT FOOL is typically held by an individual with an exceedingly humorous personality to captivate their audience. They provide entertainment at scheduled festivities and lighten the mood when it is called for. COURT ALCHEMIST [ @Drake Tenshu ] The COURT ALCHEMIST is in charge of distributing potions to the Petra when required, and to teach their craft to students. They should be able to note local herbs of the Petra and guide those who need them to their native location, and teach citizens about their properties. COURT MAGE [ Vacant ] The COURT MAGE is an individual well-versed in the practice of any sort of magic, though it is preferred they are knowledgeable on many types of magic. The Court Mage should be capable of spreading information about their practice and taking commissions for the Archducal Household and its court. CONFESSOR OF THE COMMONWEALTH [ Vacant ] The CONFESSOR OF THE COMMONWEALTH is a position traditionally assigned to Petra’s Bishop. They distribute alms to the poor while simultaneously working as a personal confessor to the gentry. MASTER OF THE HUNT [ Vacant ] The Master of the Hunt is expected to be the host of a biannual hunt in the vast yet bountiful wildlands and forests that surround the Commonwealth, along with instructing Petran citizens how to safely hunt and handle the equipment that comes with doing such. Whenever there is an event in Petra that revolves around the aspect of hunting, the Master of the Hunt is expected to be contacted first. MASTER OF THE ATTIRE [ @Marshi ] The MASTER OF THE ATTIRE is tasked with keeping track of the trends of Petran fashion. As haute couture moves into the wardrobes of Petra’s citizens, the Master of Attire is responsible for establishing the regulations of fashion and the desirable way of dressing oneself. MASTER OF THE HORSE [ Vacant ] In a place with a chivalric and martial background, the Master of the Horse is responsible for the maintenance of an important tradition- the selecting of Petra’s most capable horses to assist the Order. This is an honorary title that is typically granted to Knights. MASTER OF THE CELLAR [ @Etow ] The MASTER OF THE CELLAR is charged to confirm the quality of wines, spirits and such. They are responsible for introducing and stocking only the finest of both the old world and new. WARDSHIPS Wardships align with the values of court life. The idea of educational integrity beginning at a young age is an important custom within Petran society. A young ward’s mind is nurtured with lessons of history, the arts, health, swordsmanship and modern sciences. A wardship is not exclusive to just the young, it can extend through all years until eighteen. A ward is typically taken in by an individual of the Archducal House or the Round Table where then, the mentor is expected to raise them with excellent quality of care. A ward may be subjected to random tasks and assignments such as event hosting, adventures or acts of service. To become a ward, all that is necessary is a letter from the youth’s parent for consent and swear to follow the Pledge of the Seven Mercies The Ward’s advisor shall be the one to give the ward a trial determining if they’ve successfully completed their wardship. After completion, a graduation ceremony shall commence and the ward has the option of ascending within the courts by taking on a role, or doing whatever else they please. By the time a ward’s tenure is finished, they should feel accomplished after the amount of work they’ve done on top of achieving an elite education. SUMMARY OF COURT ETIQUETTE It is the responsibility of the Court Chamberlaine to set an expectation amongst the courtiers for behavior, these include: - That courtiers, at all times, respect their superiors and address them with their proper titles when conversing. [See Titles and Addressment] -That one carries themself with a respectful demeanor, and dresses accordingly. -That one refrains from physical contact outside a private setting. -That one begins or ends a proper conversation with a curtsy or bow. These are subject to revisal and may be extended, changed or removed entirely at any given time. The Commonwealth of the Petra has, for many years, severely lacked the means of festivity. For too long have the ballrooms of the Estenprome remained unused. All subjects of Almaris, with peaceful relations to Petra, are encouraged to participate. Local freshly-baked pastries and refreshments shall be provided, and abundant. The Archduchess carries a deep fondness for all things blue and therefore, encourages all attendees of the ball to abide by the theme ‘Under the Sea’. Each lady and lord of any background is expected to garnish themselves in elegant blue attire to match the corresponding atmosphere of the ballroom. The Ball shall occur on the 7th of Godfrey’s Triumph, 1919 in The Estenprome Ballroom. TIMETABLE WELCOMING CEREMONY Before the event begins, members of the River Court and Archducal family shall greet their guests. Published the 9th of Tobias’ Bounty, 1891 The Baron d’Artois was finally laid to rest after succumbing to his chronic illness on the 15th of Godfey’s Triumph, 1891. At just twenty-seven years old, Arnaud has left behind me, his wife, and seven children which were always so dear to him. My heart aches and refuses to believe that the charming boy, whom I met at thirteen years old, is gone. He had a love and fascination for poetry, dance, music and life all around. Though our relationship was not always perfect, he constantly put in extra effort to make sure that I was comfortable. I have never met another as caring and kind as Arnaud, it is a shame that he was taken from this realm so soon. Along with his family, he has left his ancestral home, Artois, into the hands of his eldest child and her regent. The young Lord was believed to have caught a fever, suffering for three years prior to his death. As he was conscious of his gradual deterioration, he prepared a contingency for the legacy of Halcourt. Originally he planned for me, Henrietta Halcourt d’Artois, to become Regent… but shortly before his death, I fell ill to the very same sickness which took my husband. Unable to muster the strength which is necessary to fulfill the tedious tasks of ruling, I resign from the position as Regent and grant it towards my late husband’s beloved sister, Béatrice Cateline Halcourt d’Artois. I have faith in her work and believe that she will do an exquisite job managing Artois. The Baronial title is now given to the late Lord Arnaud’s eldest daughter, Lady Nicoletta Anastasie Halcourt d’Artois…now dubbed the Baroness d’Artois. Until the eight year-old Baroness reaches the age of sixteen, Lady Béatrice Huntshill shall oversee the realm and take Baroness Nicoletta’s place in the seat of the Harvest Lords in Petra until her era of Regency reaches its end. My daughter, the Baroness of Artois, takes after her father. Not only has she adopted his characteristics, she has also developed his intelligence and love for writing. I have no doubts that once she is old enough, she will make a fantastic leader on the Commonwealth’s council. My blessings go out to my family. I pray that they do not catch this horrid sickness that has spread amongst my husband, my darling son and daughter, and myself. I pray for the health of the Halcourts and our future.
