If you want to be recognized in orc society, you need to be strong or smart, you need to demonstrate how strong or smart, and you need to do it in a way that people care about. Punching a mountain in half is impressive, but Orcs probably wouldn't consider you important, just strong. You need to be strong and helpful. Same with smart, you can know everything there is to know, and nobody will care unless you apply it in a way that helps the orcs.

It isn't that they're dumb, it's just that their culture basically teaches them "orcs are big and strong and everyone else can go cry themselves to death because they are not big and strong", and that's the attitude orcs have around other species. If orcs weren't paying attention to your instructions it probably isn't because they weren't smart enough, but because they didn't care. As for orcs seeming unintelligent just through what they actually know, it's because orcs aren't raised to read and write and be good at maths like humans, elves and dwarves are. They're raised to fight. Ask an orc 2 + 2 and it's a crapshoot if you'll get a proper answer, but ask him to kill a dangerous human with just a pointy stick, he will probably know exactly how to do it before you're even finished with the request. Of course... it's easier to see orcs as smart when my own is deliberately clueless.

I thought the Orcs and Elves liked eachother because of the whole "respect for nature" thing they've both got going. Course the elves respect it because it's pretty and we respect it because we know it can kick our asses any time it wants. As for the murdering parents thing I plan for Krah to be an idiot savant when it comes to orc raiding history.

I figured Ug was just a sort of grunt of respect, in the same way rugged barbarian types usually grunt and nod slightly and it just kind of developed from a sound into a real word.

I always figured a proper vibrant green was a sign of youth and it slowly changed over time to something more tan or whatever depending on the person and what particular colors they've eaten. I dunno where I got that to be honest. Reading all of this, I seem to have accidentally made Krah look absolutely perfect for his backstory by complete accident simply out of ignorance of how normal orcs look (he has quite a lot of hair for an orc, he wears thick clothes...)

I did see some WoW pics, but none of them had my idea of the proper beard, which is a beard and a moustache at the same time. I think that's just because orcs usually have tiny noses, so a moustache would look a bit odd. Still seems weird to me that nobody tried it.

Alright, just checking. I just find it odd that I can't seem to find a good picture of an Orc with a proper moustache/beard combo anywhere on the web.

I hate to bring up a relatively old thread but I was just staring at my humorously recolored avatar, and while admiring the manliness, something hit me. I've never seen an orc with a beard. So... Do they grow beards?... Can they? I know that in a lot of settings elves can't grow beards, I don't know if that applies here. Never really considered an orcish beard before, but now I think Krahnag might have to grow one.

I would like to note here that the reason that Krahnag wears a shirt/tunic thing is because he doesn't really live that close to the rest of the orcs and not because I didn't pay attention to the fact that being shirtless is something that all orcs do for a reason. yup I'm definately not stupid The alternative is that he's really self-concious.

I think my orc is a nice example of how the orc accent doesn't necessarily make you sound stupid. Because he spent a lot of his life in the wild and with his elfy friend, he doesn't have as much of an accent as most others do. However, he's also the dumbest person ever.
