  1. Updated on the 9th of Msitza ag Dargund, 578 E.S., to account for the lines of Joren I and Josef of Galahar, and the dissolution of Hanseti-Ruska.
  2. Republished as of the 1st of Wzuvar and Byvca 573 E.S., to account for changes made to the law through legislation of the Royal Duma, implemented Edicts, and for the reintegration of the Herzen Haurul into the Haurul Caezk, so that the Kongzem only has one lawcode.
  3. KRUSAE ZWY KONGZEM Issued by the CROWN On the 1st day of Wzuvar ag Byvca of 573 E.S. EA BYK ZWE ZANYOTSKER ZWEER EA TER PETRAVEZKER. “I WOULD HAVE PERISHED HAD I NOT PERSISTED.” IT IS STRENGTH AND ENDURANCE THAT DEFINES THE HAESENI PEOPLE. These are the words written by King Sisigmund III ‘the Golden’ over a century ago. In this time we have driven back both Emperor and King. Now the eternal enemy lay crushed beneath twenty-thousand boots. The Haeseni have proven their strength by steel and blood. Our realm persists, as it shall for a thousand years. The Haurul Caezk was first written in 340 E.S., the year following the proclamation of the Edict of Separation and the independence of the Kingdom of Hanseti-Ruska from Orenia. It was rewritten in its entirety throughout 400 E.S. by order of ‘the Golden’, and had persisted largely unchanged throughout the reigns of the three Kings to follow. We stand now 103 years since the signing of the Peace of Eastfleet and the de facto end of Heartlander Imperium. May this law be the only law to bind our people, from this day, until the last day. 7. THE THIRD MARIAN ADMINISTRATION KRUSAE ZWY KONGZEM Issued by the OFFICE OF THE PALATINE Naf zwy 16th i Misitza ag Dargund i 547 E.S. HIS ROYAL MAJESTY, MARIUS III NIKOLAS, KING OF HANSETI AND RUSKA AS THE MONARCH @Dogged Following the shocking deaths of his parents and predecessors, King Ivan VIII and Queen Nataliya I, Marius ascended the throne on 539 E.S. (1986 F.A.) at the age of twenty-four. The young monarch did not waste any time after the unfortunate accident that claimed the lives of the Twin Crows as plans to reform the Kingdom's noble structure almost immediately came to fruition alongside the success of his diplomatic efforts to maintain the remnants his father's legacy: The Covenant of Man. His Majesty has always aimed to be a champion of transparency and is often seen amongst his people when he does not work tirelessly with the Aulic Council to administer the Kingdom. ______ HER ROYAL MAJESTY, JULIYA ELENA, QUEEN OF HAENSE AS THE CONSORT @annabanana1014 Since their childhood and before their betrothal, Princess Juliya Barclay and the then Grand Prince Marius always remained close. King Ivan VIII saw this relationship flourish and, alongside Prince Alfred I and Leon II of Reinmar, sought to strengthen the ties between the Haeseni and Reinmaren further through an alliance of marriage. At a young age, the darling Princess was a common face seen throughout the city of Naevaldev. When it came time to finally rule as Queen-Consort alongside King Marius III, Her Majesty did not hesitate to call for the restoration of the Royal Courts which she fittingly named "The Hope Court" (New Marian: Ve Nadziesk Kort). ╠══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣ THE AULIC COUNCIL “Va Eyvize ve Krawn.” ‘To Advise the Crown.’ The AULIC COUNCIL (New Marian: EUYLIK KONKIL), or officially known as the AULIC COUNCIL AND PRIVY COUNCIL OF THE CROWN, is composed of commanding members of several Aulic Offices, who hold authority over the Kingdom’s legislature, military, law, interior affairs, treasury and foreign affairs, second only to the Sovereign of Haense, and advises the Sovereign on matters of varying significance. Historically, the Aulic Council has been composed of several trustworthy advisors who oversee the Offices of Palatine, Marshal, Speaker, etcetera. In most cases, those born of nobility have held a seat on the Council although there have been cases where members of the gentry have also held a seat on the Council. As per tradition, these Aulic Councillors [...] ‘are distinguished by the unique bulavas forged using different metals to symbolize where their authority reaches in the Kingdom. The reign of King Petyr I saw the creation of the first Aulic office, the Lord Palatine (f. Chancellor of Haense) which has since been occupied by many under the reigns of the Haeseni monarchs.’ Since Petyr I’s reign, the Aulic Council has emerged as a flourishing body of Haeseni government. 8. VE HERZEN I VE DUMA THE SPEAKER OF THE DUMA KRUSAE ZWY KONGZEM Issued by the LORD PALATINE On behalf of THE CROWN On this 21st day of Tov ag Yermey of 539 E.S. VA BIRODEO HERZENAV AG ELDERVIK, THE LORD SPEAKER HENRIK AMADOR RETIRES THE CHAIR AND THE NEW SPEAKER HAS BEEN ELECTED. The Crown would like to express gratitude towards Lord Amador for his many years of loyal service to the Royal Duma and to our Kingdom. Throughout the entire reign of Ivan VIII and Nataliya I, and for a short period under our liege Marius III, the Lord Amador had maintained order within the halls and served both loyally and productively. Multiple bills were introduced and passed in the hopes to revitalize our capital city following reconstruction. May he find the remainder of his years tranquil and free of stresses as he settles into a life of deserved retirement. Following the Lords retirement in the Duma Hall, it was time for the boyars to elect his successor. In a tight race between the Duchess of Vidaus, Lady Tatiyana vas Ruthern, and the Margravatal Heir of Kvasz, Lord Sigmund Ludovar, Lady Ruthern managed to score the victory of nine votes to a commendable four. Following the election and confirmation of the Lady Speaker, Lord Ludovar managed to secure the position of Lord Handler. Lady Ruthern has long served the Kingdom in politics from an early age under the tutelage of the previous Lord Speaker. The newly elected Lady Speaker wishes to breathe fresh air into the Royal Duma by reintroducing term limits for Royal Aldermen as well as the restoration of the Royal Inquisitor, one of which has already been accomplished. The Crown holds no doubt in Her Excellency’s ability to ensure the steady flow of policies and the fair process of our longstanding Duma. ╠══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣ IV JOVEO MAAN, His Royal Majesty, Marius III, by the Grace of Godan, King of Hanseti and Ruska, Grand Hetman of the Army, Hochmeister of the Order of the Crow, Prince of Bihar, Dules, Lahy, Muldav, Solvesborg, Slesvik and Ulgaard, Duke of Carnatia, Vanaheim, and Valwyck, Margrave of Korstadt, Rothswald and Vasiland, Count of Alban, Siegrad, Werdenburg, Alimar, Baranya, Graiswald, Karikhov, Karovia, Kaunas, Kavat, Kovachgrad, Kvasz, Markev, Nenzing, Torun, Toruv, Valdev, and Werdenburg, Viscount of Varna, Baron of Esenstadt, Kraken’s Watch, Kralta, Krepost, Lorentz, Rytsburg, Buck, and Astfield, Lord of the Westfolk, Protector and Lord of the Highlanders, etcetera. 9. VE HAUCDRAGUS THE ROYAL CURATOR KRUSAE ZWY KONGZEM Issued by the LORD PALATINE On behalf of THE CROWN On this 21st day of Tov ag Yermey of 539 E.S. VA BIRODEO HERZENAV AG ELDERVIK, THERE IS A COMMON SAYING THAT HISTORY MUST BE TAUGHT SO WE MAY LEARN NOT TO REPEAT OUR MISTAKES. From the reign of Sigismund II until the end of Josef I, the Royal Curator sat on the Aulic Council as the cultural advisor, master of archives, and the Kingdom’s premier historian. After the dissolution of the position, various attempts to upkeep the growing archives were made by genius scholars, the courts, and well versed in historians. These efforts are well applauded and recognized by the Crown, however in recent times it was determined that our archives were largely outdated and far too sporadic in its upkeep. Therefore, by decree of our liege Marius III, the Royal Curator shall be re-implemented into the Aulic Council and shall assume its previous duties as cultural advisor, chief educator, and master of archives. The effort to maintain our history and culture as it was under the helm of Sir Viktor Kortrevich, VKML, requires a scholar with a natural aptitude for history and an exceptional work ethic. Both the Palatial Government and Crown came to a consensus that Lord Rickard Hieromar Kortrevich, our Grand Maer, fit this criteria and more. His Excellency is entrusted to update the currently outdated archives, undertake projects to enrich our culture, and maintain our proud heritage with the Lead Bulava in hand. 10. VE EDYKT I NAUVALDEV THE EDICT OF NEW VALDEV KRUSAE ZWY KONGZEM Issued by the LORD PALATINE On behalf of THE CROWN On this 21st day of Tov ag Yermey of 539 E.S. VA BIRODEO HERZENAV AG ELDERVIK, LONG AGO IN THE AULIC COUNCIL OF SIGISMUND II, SAT THE ROYAL CURATOR. For its entire existence, the Royal Curator had been in charge of maintaining the culture and recording the history of Hanseti-Ruska. In Arcas and New Reza, under the guidance of Benedict Cardinal Jorenus, then Bishop, and later Princess Alexandria Karina, the office truly flourished with the establishment of a museum and maintenance of the Royal Archives. After the death of Sir Viktor Kortrevich, VKML, Royal Curator and co-founder of Baruch & Kortrevich publishing, the seat remained vacant and eventually vanished altogether. No longer. The role that both culture and history plays in our rapidly progressing society is not something the Kingdom can afford to leave unmanaged. Despite the best efforts of Royal Archivists since the abolishment of the Curators Office, mainly Lord Henrik Amador, the records proved to be too much to handle for one single person to maintain. Therefore, it is the wish of the Crown, that the Royal Curator be reinstated as an official position under the Aulic Government where they shall sit on the Aulic Council, serve as the primary manager of the royal archives, chief educator and cultural advisor of the realm. ╠══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣ ARTICLE I: ESTABLISHMENT OF THE CURATOR The Royal Curator shall serve on the Aulic Council and wield the Lead Bulava as the Manager of the Royal Archives, Chief Educator, and Cultural Advisor of the realm. All heraldry and collars by @Zanthuz THE ROYAL ORDERS OF MERIT ATSK TIZ CEHZ AG KAROS “Act with Heart and Honour” VA BIRODEO HERZENAV AG EDLERVIK, AWARDED TO THOSE WHO HAVE MADE SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE KINGDOM, THE ROYAL ORDERS OF MERIT ARE ONES OF GREAT PRESTIGE. The inducted shall be linked to a relevant order in which they have served as paragons. With it comes the honourifics of ‘KOM’, ‘KOA’, or ‘KOU’ to represent Haense and Her people. The orders shall indefinitely be awarded to any Haensemen, regardless of their birth or bloodlines. The Royal Orders of Merit were originally established with the Edict of the Lily Garden of 469 E.S. by King Georg I, named after three of the most notable people of the ages in their pertinent areas. This Edict retired the Civil Knighthood of Queen Maya and the Lily, where these two are distinguished in that those inducted into the Royal Orders of Merit as a Kossar are not permitted to be referred to as a Ser or Dame. We do therefore proclaim the following: THE ROBERTINE ORDER OF MERIT KOSSAR OF MERIT (KOM) Named after the twice-served Lord Palatine, Robert Sigismund, the father of Biharism. Robert of Bihar served at a tumultuous time in Haeseni history, and persevered through the toils of the time, accomplishing many feats and forming the fundamental principles that Haense was founded upon. Robert of Bihar exemplifies the high status of excellence and merit set today that only few achieve and are rewarded for. Individuals who have demonstrated outstanding applied intelligence, administration, and charity may be considered for induction. Those who are deemed worthy will have displayed their promotion of central ideals, institutions and charity in service to the people of Haense. Kossars of the Robertine Order of Merit are entitled to use the signature KOM. THE WAILER ORDER OF ARTS KOSSAR OF ARTS (KOA) Named after the prolific historical author, Alistair Wailer. Alistair Wailer is one of the first and most revered Haeseni authors. He has given us an abundance of books and essays that have broadened the minds of all that have read his collection and inspired many others to take up the quill and add to the ever-expanding library of Haeseni works. Alistair Wailer personifies the artistic and literary nature that our Creator endowed all with, and the gift that only a few use to its full potential. Individuals who have demonstrated outstanding literacy, artistic or musical talent and produced great works may be considered for induction. Those who are deemed worthy will have displayed their skill and masterful works of art in the furthering of their field within Haense. Kossars of the Wailer Order of Arts are entitled to use the signature KOA. THE WALTON ORDER OF THE UNYIELDING KOSSAR OF THE UNYIELDING (KOU) Named after the valiant knight, Ser Walton ‘the Wall’. Ser Walton was Knight Paramount during the reign of King Karl III where he served loyally and diligently until his final breath. In the years prior, he had been the knight to end King Sigismund III’s suffering in a duel to the death by order of the King. Individuals who have demonstrated outstanding loyalty, courage, and leadership in their duties to their Kingdom may be considered for induction. Those who are deemed worthy will have displayed their strong moral character and selfless service in defense of the Crown of Haense. 12. Updated on the 6th of Tov ag Yermey, 533 E.S., to account for the ascension of Nataliya I.
  13. KING IVAN VIII & NATALIYA I’S ADVISORY COUNCIL KRUSAE ZWY KONGZEM Issued by the CROWN On this 6th day of Tov ag Yermey of 533 E.S. VA BIRODEO HERZENAV AG ELDERVIK, THE CROWN’S ADVISORY COUNCIL IS COMPRISED OF THE AULIC COUNCILORS AND THE BOYARS. The Aulic Council, as established herein, are the chief officers and advisors to the realm which oversee its daily runnings, ultimately overseen by the Palatine as the Crown’s head of government. The Palatine’s Office is the only permanent fixture of the council. All other positions within are summoned by their own merit befitting of the position, as well as with regards to the competency, loyalty, and perseverance of those who may then hold the aforementioned positions. Additionally, all Aulic Councilmen are granted an inherent position as Jovenaar throughout their tenure. The Boyar Council is composed of unofficial advisors that are specially handpicked by the Crown itself for their specific expertise on certain topics, or their undoubted loyalty to the state. Further, it is hoped that those wishing to be elevated to a ruling or advisory position have a great understanding of this most renowned kingdom, including its history and its overarching values. It is the wish of the Crown that this document shall alleviate any misconceptions or confusions of the government and its workings. THE CROWN THE AUTHORITY ABSOLUTE XXIII KOENG HIS ROYAL MAJESTY, IVAN VIII, KING OF HANSETI-RUSKA A sickly child, Ivan VIII was born to King Aleksandr III and Blessed Queen Amaya of Venzia, and his appearances to the public were limited for this reason. He was hardly, if ever, seen beyond the limits of his quarters or of the Esrova Prikaz at most. He was formally introduced at Royal Court at the age of nine, and raised with the spectre of war looming over the horizon in Veletz. When war was declared, he had barely reached majority. Though this might have been cause for fear to other young men of the time, Ivan took to the thrill, and the mortal peril, of battle with a warrior’s enthusiasm. As if granted a second wind in life, to make up for the sedentary youth he had lived, Ivan never seemed more alive than when he first whetted his blade at Breakwater, or when he was marching at the head of a Brotherhood column, or in the thick of battle slicing away with his beloved sabre. He did not take a general’s command, but offered much support to his Father’s command at battle, and endeavoured to serve a strong example to the common strelt. When he inherited the throne, he sought with the same zeal he brought from the close of the war, to reform the knights orders’ of the realm that had languished under his father’s reign, as well as ensure the restoration of the Duma alongside his former Lord Palatine Ivo. Though he found much greater joy in the saddle and upon the battlefield than amongst papers, he has given his utmost alongside his wife Nataliya to reform the aged institutions of the realm, and return them to their greater heights. XXII KOENAS HER ROYAL MAJESTY, NATALIYA I, QUEEN OF HANSETI-RUSKA Born posthumously under the sign of Morrighein to Prince Franz Leopold and Natalia Kovachev, Nataliya Leopoldina was raised amongst the smallfolk in Waltonburg until the death of her mother. She was sent to the Royal Capital of Haense, Valdev, to become acquainted with the Royal Household and be taken under their care. In the coming years, the prophecy of the Twin Crows was announced to Royal Court, and similarly the entirety of Haense, detailing two flocks of crows uniting once more; Barbanov and Morovar. Thus, the former Lady Nataliya and Grand Prince were betrothed, and wed succeeding the victorious Siege of Breakwater in 506 E.S. In her time as Grand Princess, Nataliya served as Lady Regent of the Kingdom during the absence of Aleksandr II, and an edict soon passed granting herself, and any future spouses to the Heir, authority greater than that of the Grand Lady. Since inheriting, she has sought to reform the Haeseni Courts, and delved further into governance as made an empowered consort, and later successor to her husband after his attempted assassination. THE AULIC COUNCIL ‘Va Eyvize ve Krawn’ (To Advise the Crown) The AULIC COUNCIL (New Marian: EUYLIK KONKIL), or officially known as the AULIC COUNCIL AND PRIVY COUNCIL OF THE CROWN, is composed of commanding members of several Aulic Offices, who hold authority over the Kingdom’s legislature, military, law, interior affairs, treasury and foreign affairs, second only to the Sovereign of Haense, and advises the Sovereign on matters of varying significance. Historically, the Aulic Council has been composed of several trustworthy advisors who oversee the Offices of Palatine, Marshal, Speaker, etcetera. In most cases, those born of nobility have held a seat on the Council although there have been cases where members of the gentry have also held a seat on the Council. As per tradition, these Aulic Councillors [...] ‘are distinguished by the unique bulavas forged using different metals to symbolise where their authority reaches in the Kingdom. History has seen the addition of various Aulic offices to advise the King in matters such as stewardry, foreign affairs, and more. Presented below are these offices and who currently holds them at the leisure of the current reigning monarchs, Ivan VIII and Nataliya I, in ranking of authority. OFFICE OF THE SPEAKER ‘Va Yprezide Awvr ve Ylegizlatyre’ (To Preside over the Legislature) “The Office of the Speaker shall serve as administrator of the legislature of the Aulic Government, his Majesty’s Royal Duma, and oversee the integral functioning of the body and its frequent meetings.” - Aulic Edict, 341 E.S. XIX HERZEN Henrik Amador, 1st Vikomit van Zvezlund Henrik Amador, 1st Viscount of Zvezlund 524 E.S. - Present | 1971 A.H. - Present @critter Monarch(s): Ivan VIII, Nataliya I The Viscount of Zvezlund, serving as XIX Herzen and wielder of the Black Bulava, has been entrusted as the presiding officer of the Duma. [...] ‘responsible for calling forth sessions during each term and facilitating the deliberation of the Duma, and for delivering legislation to the Crown and the Kingdom of Hansti-Ruska to receive royal assent.’ (Speakers of the Royal Duma) The Lord Henrik has lived a life of erudition, and dedicated himself to the art of the pen and the legislature both. After the passing of the previous Lord Speaker Otto Ludovar, Henrik was nominated by the Boyars of the Duma to be the next in the office, and subsequently granted the Bulava by the Crown. OFFICE OF THE MARSHAL ‘Fitsk dlum ze Birodal’ (To Fight for the Realm) “The Office of the Marshal shall assume sole responsibility for the management of the Royal Army of Hanseti-Ruska, ensuring the protection of the Kingdom and surrounding Haeseni realm from hostile pretenders.” - Aulic Edict, 341 E.S. XXVIII HAUCKOMANDANT Caspian Colborn Lord Caspian Colborn 529 E.S. - Present | 1976 A.H. - Present @Sandman_Plays Monarch(s): Ivan VIII, Nataliya I Lord Caspian, serving as XVIII Hauckomandant and wielder of the Iron Bulava, has been entrusted as ‘the commanding member who holds the authority over the Kingdom’s military orders, second only to the Sovereign of Haense, and leads the realm as the head of Defence of the Haeseni realm.’ (Lord Marshals of Haense) In his adolescence a leal bannerman to the late King Aleksandr II, Lord Caspian was first a Ser for his efforts at saving the King’s life during a hunt gone wrong. Though the King eventually passed, he was knighted for his brave efforts, and served next as an officer in the Brotherhood under the command of the previous Lord Marshal Rickard Ruthern. Endowed with a youthful energy and vigour, he imparts the same unto the Brotherhood beneath his command. OFFICE OF THE TREASURER ‘Va Meynage ve Kongzem’s Tryzery’ (To Manage the Kingdom’s Treasury) “The Office of the Treasurer shall assume responsibility for the management of the Royal Treasury and the economic and fiscal affairs of the Kingdom of Hanseti-Ruska.” - Aulic Edict, 341 E.S. IX ARANYIAZ Mikhail Colborn, 4th Komit van Malkovya Mikhail Colborn, 4th Count of Malkovya 524 E.S. - Present | 1971 A.H. - Present @Kaladin Stormblessed Monarch(s): Ivan VIII, Nataliya I The Count of Malkovya, serving as the IX Aranyiaz and wielder of the Silver Bulava, has been entrusted as ‘the ranking member who holds the authority over upholding the Kingdom’s economic affairs, second only to the Sovereign of Haense, and leads the realm as one of the Heads of Economics and first aide to the Crown in all economic manners.’ (Royal Treasurers of Haense) Lord Mikhail has long served the government and endeavoured to better its economy with all work he has wrought. Proven first by a long and fruitful tenure amongst the Office of the Stewardry, he has earnt his new office as Lord Treasurer, where-in he may continue to ensure the Kingdom’s stocks are well-laden with all it may require. The Crown has utmost faith that he shall continue to ensure that the Haeseni man is armed, armoured and well-fed, as all Highlanders ought be in the realm of Highlanders. OFFICE OF THE EMISSAR ‘Atsk az ve Krawn’s Ropryzentav’ (To Act as the Crown’s Representative) “The Office of the Envoy shall assume the diplomatic responsibilities of the Aulic Government through international correspondence, the broaching of international treaties and pacts, the establishment of Haeseni embassies internationally and the hosting of allied ambassadors within the Kingdom of Hanseti-Ruska.” - Aulic Edict, 341 E.S. XVI SZARA Milena vas Ruthern Lady Milena vas Ruthern 533 E.S. - Present | 1980 A.H. - Present @MunaZaldrizoti Monarch(s): Ivan VIII, Nataliya I Lady Milena, serving as XVI Szara and wielder of the Ivory Bulava, has been entrusted as ‘the ranking member who holds the authority overseeing the Kingdom’s foreign affairs, second only to the Sovereign of Haense, and leads the realm as one of the Heads of Diplomacy and first aide to the Crown in all diplomatic manners.’ (Aulic Envoys of Haense) Having served the crown for a number of years in the guise of Royal-Cupbearer since her youth, Lady Milena’s rise to her newfound office has been supported by her strength of wit and of patience, and her willingness to lay down her life in service to her monarchs. Her gifts, her strong character, her loyalty to the realm and her personal ambition leaves her a most suitable choice for a position that requires both leal service and self-sufficiency. OFFICE OF THE GRAND LADY ‘Va Obdrazl Ameneir ag Steandik’ (To Uphold Manners and Decorum) “The Office of the Grand Lady shall assume oversight of the Royal Court alongside the Crown to maintain the quality of the Royal Courts and the social events held within them.” XXV HAUCHERZENAS Marjoreya vas Ruthern Lady Marjoreya vas Ruthern 517 E.S. - Present | 1964 A.H. - Present @ncarr Monarch(s): Aleksandr II, Ivan VIII, Nataliya I Lady Marjoreya, XXV Haucherzenas and wielder of the Rose Bulava, has been entrusted as ‘the ranking member of the Royal Court who enforces courtly etiquette to the highest standard and oversees the workings of the Custodian of the Palace and the Court Chamberlain, ensuring the quality of the events that they hold.’ (The Royal Court of 525 E.S.) Following the retirement of the late and Venerable Queen Amaya the Pure, the office of Grand Lady remained in vacancy for a time whilst the courts were under the guidance of Queen Nataliya, then Grand Princess. Thinking it unwise to leave such a vital position to the health of the nation’s culture and hearth empty, Lady Marjoreya of Vidaus was appointed to take up the Rose Bulava. She was selected to fill the empty office by virtue of her learned nature of the courtly traditions, and her extensive knowledge of the history of the Courts and prior functions. THE BOYAR COUNCIL The BOYAR COUNCIL (New Marian: Ve Boyar Konkil) is a group of councillors, often with a singular particular focus or a range that the monarch calls upon for informal advice and suggestion in addition to that of the Aulic Council. Those that reach the office are often chosen for their personal loyalty, diligence and competence to the monarch themselves. Created during the reign of King Sigismund II and once more formulated and codified during the reign of King Sigismund III, the council continues to sit with the intent to bring prosperity to the kingdom. In this position, they are granted the legal power to hear disputes and pleas of innocence, to oversee criminals of the realm, to decide upon trial or not, as well as to dispense the Crown’s Justice and appropriate punishment to those so deemed worthy of punishment. 15. VE MARIAN KURSAIN THE MARIAN RETINUE EA SZALMAR TER MZIDER “I Shall Not Falter” As Stanislaw levied his blade, it was not by virtue of his own strength that the old Bogatyr held it. No; for he had lived a great many years, and fought a great many battles. From the Coup of Lahy, where his King Barbov was usurped from his throne, to the Battle of Azen Plains that restored him to it, Stanislaw could not begin to count the dead - both by his own hand, and those at this side. And so it was that he knew, with each stroke of his blade, they were watching. His friends. His foes. They watched to see what became of their deaths, and the mantle of their sacrifice rested upon his shoulders. Knowing that, he would never falter. THE SONG OF THE BLACK THE MARIAN RETINUE HAS STOOD SOME TWO CENTURIES, FORMED BY DECREE OF THE GOOD KING MARIUS, SECOND OF HIS NAME. These warriors of fierce repute are drawn from steelforged second sons, daring daughters, and those most eminent streltsy raised to honour for the deeds. Regardless of their birth, all pledge unyielding loyalty to the Dual-Kingdom and the storied line of Barbov. It was not long since past that the Marian Retinue sat aside the Order of the Crow at their great table. And then in tandem, that they might each fulfill their own noble role in defence of the Kingdom of Sigismund. Now, in the 531st year since the Ascension, with the great revival of the Brotherhood of Saint Karl, is the Marian Retinue expanded, and the good Order of the Crow laid reverently to rest. Here follows a recounting of the reformation of the Marian Retinue, that all who consider it may look upon its banner with pride, or in fear. THE MARIAN RETINUE A Knighthood in Hanseti-Ruska is a most noble title earned and kept, and do all who wear it stand as equals; with no man held above another but for the wisdom he speaks or the strength of his swordhand. The Marian Retinue serve first at the behest of the crown, namely the reigning monarch(s) and their issue. Secondarily, should the Lord Palatinate and Aulic Council believe themselves in need, the Knights of the Marian shall serve expressly as their agents by extension of the crown’s authority. Otherwise, they shall act independently upon the merit of their own will in defence of the realm and the expansion of its glory. The title of ‘Knight Paramount’ shall be afforded to the most sage and senior member of the Order, provided they survive the storied Drowning of the Blades. It is they who shall attend to the maintenance of ‘Ve Laurya Kossar’ or ‘Knight’s atlas’, in which is contained all the deeds of knights living and dead, for so long as the Sers have stood. Unlike Orders of ages past, the Knight Paramount holds no true power over their brothers save for the prestige they bear. Command shall be determined as decided amongst themselves, or through the Crown and Aulic Council in accordance with the mission at hand, where might the most fitting warrior assume command of that which they are best suited. Distinct from the Order of the Crow; squires, pages and the like have no formal role amongst the retinue, though those knights of fair hand are well encouraged to take up their service. That the kingdom’s youth might one day learn, through practice at arms and histories and dutiful service to assume the place of their forebears. In this, noble scions might take up such common duties of squirehood such as the care of arms and armour, heraldry and general assistance amongst another of the realm’s great warriors. THE ROLE OF A KNIGHT Above all, the Marian Retinue stand as those foremost agents of the Crown, chiefly responsible for the well-being of the royal family and by extension, the enforcement of their will. Their duties might well encompass any aspect of the governance of the realm, be it diplomacy, command, or in more menial pursuits such as tax collection and the keeping of the peace. As well as their service to the crown, any fair knight ought to be expected to amass tales of personal triumph. No man is as fearsome in the lists as the winged knights of the Marian, nor amongst the lairs of darkspawn and devilry that plague the Kingdom of Sigismund. As guardians of the Edlervik, each knight shall be afforded a small parcel of land in which to shepherd and defend. Most commonly, towers in a fashion of the margravates of old, that they might stand vigilant upon the outer reaches of the realm or the farms and farrows at its heart. TO BECOME A KNIGHT Any trueborn Haeseni, bar those who stand to inherit land and title, might by the strength of their will ascend to knighthood amongst the Marian Retinue. Those of the nobility may be presented to the Crown at court by the heads of their house; for should their noble blood and pedigree prepare them for the charge of squirehood. The honour of knighthood is open as well to those of common blood, who have been recognized by the Crown and Aulic Council to have displayed great deeds and brave heroics in proof of the value of their character. The valour of a Marian must be proven beyond all doubt. Following their nomination, all aspirants must undertake the knightly Trial of the Bogatyr, laid upon them in court by the Crown and its most esteemed Oracle. An aspirant shall undertake a grueling quest, often into foreign lands, and by tradition must bear the cursed scabbard of Stanislaw, said to bring about great misfortune. Such an adventure may constitute a hunt for a great beast, the retrieval of some storied artifact, a service to an allied realm, or the destruction of the enemies of the Crown. Should they succeed, the aspirant must face a final trial; dubbed the ‘Iborwald’ or known to most simply as the trial of Slavomir, in which one’s own prospective comrades in the Marian Retinue shall turn on them with sword in hand. Provided they survive such an endeavor and acquit themselves with dignity, the aspirant shall be knelt before the Crown by their brothers, that they might swear the honoured Oath of the Bogatyr.
