The State Army of Riviä The Standard of House de Hartcold The State Army of Riviä is the official army of the Duchy of Riviä. The State Army is composed of several different regiments, under the Duke and his vassals. The State Army was founded by Duke Thomas de Hartcold I of Riviä shortly after the ascension of the Duchy of Riviä. The State Army is tasked with protecting the citizens of Riviä, whether it be from insurgents or declared enemies of the state, and with upholding the laws of the land. Riviän Men-At-Arms fighting against the Halsworthy Garrison during the Sacking of Halsworthy, 1667. Regiments The Lions Brigade The Lions Brigade is the personal regiment for the House of de Hartcold, the Lions Brigade is stationed in the Capital City of Riviä, Gävoles. The Regiment is under the direct command of His Grace, the Duke of Riviä. The Blackreach Brigade The Blackreach Brigade, also known as the Black Knights, is the personal regiment of the House of McCarthy and is stationed in Blackreach Castle. They are under direct command of His Lordship, the Baron of Blackreach as well as His Grace, the Duke of Riviä. The Phoenix Brigade The Phoenix Brigade is the personal regiment of the House of Tarly and is stationed in Ibelin Castle. They are under direct command of his Lordship, the Baron of Ibelin and His Grace, the Duke of Riviä. The Ducal Artillery Brigade The Ducal Artillery Brigade compromises experts of siege-craft and operators of trebuchets, ballistas and catapults. They are stationed in the Capital of the Duchy of Riviä, Gävoles and are under the direct command of His Grace, the Duke of Riviä. Riviäm Men-At-Arms fighting against the Silvervein Horde at the Battle of Blackden, 1650. Ranks Senior Command Grand Marshal The Grand Marshal is the highest ranked member of the State Army. Appointed by the Duke himself, the Marshal embodies all the attributes and the characteristics of a perfect leader. He is a distinguished soldier, having participated in many wars, loyally serving the Duke. He is a leader capable of commanding an entire army. In the State Army, his word is law, only being undermined by the Duke’s authority. Upon his death, the Duke may choose a new Marshal from the Commander’s. Commander The Commanders are the High Officers of the Army, personally selected by the Duke or Marshal to serve. They handle the workings of the regiments, appoint and promote officers, as well as lead their forces to battle. They are also the only officers who can command if necessary troops of other Sergeants or Captains. In the absence of a Marshal, one of the Commanders will lead the entire army into battle. They are capable fighters and leaders, advising the Marshal in matters of grave importance. Officers Captains The Captains are the Officers inside the Army. Selected by each Commander, they are soldiers who have shown aptitude in both leading and fighting. They are capable squad leaders, leading both recruits to show them how to work as a team, as well as veterans in dangerous missions. They handle trainings, promotions and make sure that their regiment is functioning smoothly. They are usually in charge of large garrisons, such as the Capital Guard. Sergeants Sergeants are skillful soldiers who have shown promise to be good leaders. They become the assistants of Captains, helping them run training courses, suggest promotions, monitor members and take up squads in missions of low to medium danger. With time and practice, these Sergeants may one day become Captains themselves. Ranks of Foot Master at Arms Master at Arms are experienced soldiers who have acquired veteran status inside the state army. They are responsible for overseeing the training of new recruits in the State Army, trying to get them up to the standard of what the Duke and the Grand Marshal expect. Potential Sergeants are chosen from this rank, as they have the skill needed but lack the leading experience. Man at Arms These are warriors who have spent years in the army, proving time and time again their skill and loyalty. They are capable warriors, some even capable of going to missions of high risk. They are an example to follow for the recruits. Footmen Footmen are warriors who serve as basic infantry in armies of the human nations. Comprising the bulk of the State Amyrmy, the footman is the heart of the war machine for the Duchy of Rivia. Fighting in close formation, they use proven tactical methods: Advance slowly with shields raised, then draw swords and close to melee range. They are attuned to formation fighting, and coordinate their attacks. They are capable of bringing down well-armored opponents if in a group. Recruit The Recruit is an ‘Unofficial’ rank, the rank given to those who just recently enlisted in the State Army. They usually have little experience and thus are treated harshly to improve their skills and to validate their loyalty. They are given the worse tasks of all, meant to steel their nerves and mold them into proud members of the Army Specialised Ranks Quartermaster The Quartermaster is a major part of the State Army's efficiency and power in and outside of war, the rank of Quartermaster is normally assigned to a veteran officer or master at arms who has a skill in labouring. They are responsible for the administering of the barracks, laying out the war camps and looking after the essential supplies. Standard Bearer The Ensign is the rank given to those who take up the privilege and risk of fighting in war while carrying the standard of the Order and raising it proudly, a symbol of Order’s might. They are usually very capable soldiers, possessing the necessary skill to fight the enemy while holding the Banner. Disciplinarian The duty of the Disciplinarian is to ensure all soldiers in the State Army are kept in place and act accordingly to the precedents set before them. Normally these men are the ones who would lead drills, form lines and deal out a according punishment to soldiers who need it. Physician Physicians, also known as medics, are soldiers who specialise in saving lives, just as much as ending them. They are usually Men at Arms, but any rank with the necessary skills may also be appointed to this position. Physicians tend to stay in the rear guard, treating the injured soldiers and escorting them away from the battlefield as the rest of the Army pushes forward in its assault against the Duchy's enemies. From inside and outside the walls of Gavöles, the capital city of the Duchy of Riviä, the clank, clank, clank of the raising portcullis would be heard echoing throughout the silent sky. As soon as the thick iron gate was fully winched up, a loud echoing roar would be heard coming from a war horn. As soon as the war horn was finished, 400 Riviän soldiers, clad in their steel armour with each one carrying a spear with the standard of House de Hartcold upon it, would march out of the city led by Captain Theresa de Hartcold, eldest daughter to Duke Thomas I de Hartcold. As the last few soldiers left the city the portcullis would roll down, barricading the entrance from anyone entering. As the soldiers marched down the road from Riviä, you could hear their every footstep and every crunch of the gravel on the road beneath their feet. As the battalion of soldiers approached nearer and nearer towards the city of Halsworthy they could feel the climate change from the bitter cold of the far south to the warm breeze of the south west. In the horizon the walls of Halsworthy could be seen before every single soldier in the formation. The Battalion would reach the front gates of Halsworthy, the purple and white banners of House de Hartcold and the Duchy of Riviä would glitter in the wind. Captain's Theresa de Hartcold would bellow out at the top of her voice “Company halt” as her order was finished, a mass clattering of feet against the gravel of the road outside of Halsworthy would be heard echoing around the nearby area. But no sound was heard coming from inside the city. “Bring the battering ram forward and smash open those gates’ Theresa yells at the top of her voice, clearly taking control of the situation. The rolling of wheels would be heard as he giant wooden battering ram slowly approached itself towards the front gate. Underneath the roof of the battering ram each and everyone if the soldiers yelled “HEAVE” as the pulled the thick, wooden log with the metal tip backwards then swinging it forwards. BASH! “HEAVE!” BASH! “HEAVE!” “BASH” until suddenly the gates of Halsworthy were smashed open. The men of Riviä would charge in with their swords in hand towards the 100 man strong garrison guarding the city from its besiegers. All across the city the sound of metal upon metal would be heard with the sounds of men screaming their last. The town was now littered with destruction, weapons and carnage. Red, purple and green are the new colors of what was once a peaceful, city, which has now become the stage of a long, destructive battle. The air which would normally be vibrant with the sound of work, trade and craftsmanship is now thick with the scent of death and decay, the mere sense of it will make you run away. The green white and blue flags of Halsworthy were cut down and burnt, being replaced with the new purple and white flags of House de Hartcold and the Duchy of Riviä. “HALSWORTHY IS HEREBY UNDER THE OWNERSHIP OF HIS GRACE, THOMAS I DE HARTCOLD OF RIVIÄ. LONG MAY HE REIGN” Screams of joy and clinks of ale were offered around, truly, this was a good day for conquest. But at what cost.

Ducal Line of Succession Issued and Confirmed by His Grace, Thomas I of the House of de Hartcold, 4th of Snow's Maiden, 1667 Succession to the Duchy of Riviä is determined by ancestry, gender, legitimacy, and religion. The Duchy is inherited by the Duke’s children, or in the case of childlessness, by the nearest line of children. The Duchy of Riviä has an utter primogeniture line of succession. Meaning that it is the right of the legitimate firstborn son of the duke to arise to the ownership of the Duchy as well as owning the title of Duke, in precedence to younger sons, daughters and illegitimate sons as well as all other relations towards the previous Duke. Regardless of their age, legitimised bastard children - whilst their legitimisation still places them in the line of succession of the Duchy - come after all true born children of the Duke regardless of the child’s age or gender. Succession is confined solely to the trueborn descendants of Thomas de Hartcold I, Duke of Riviä. Reigning Duke: Thomas de Hartcold I, Duke of Riviä I. James de Hartcold, Heir apparent to the Barony of Adylith, first born son of Duke Thomas I de Hartcold (b. 1648) II. Henry Fitzroy de Hartcold, Second born son of Thomas de Hartcold I (b. 10th of the Snows Maiden, 1659) III. Octavius Godfrey de Hartcold, Firstborn son of Thomas de Hartcold I and Antoinette de Hartcod (b. 5th of The Amber Cold, 1674) IV. Gael de Hartcold, Firstborn son of Thomas de Hartcold I and Antoinette de Hartcold, twin to Octavius (b. 5th of The Amber Cold, 1674) V. Richard de Hartcold, brother to Thomas de Hartcold (b. 1626) VI. Wilhelmus de Hartcold, Firstborn son to Richard de Hartcold (b. 1659) VII. Lanre de Hartcold, Uncle to Thomas VIII. Leonard de Hartcold, Firstborn son to Lanre de Hartcold, Cousin to Thomas (b. 1624)

Order of the Purple Lion Founded on the 9th of the Sun's Smile, 1666, The Order of the Purple Lion was formed by Duke Thonas de Hartcold, of Riviä. The Order is run and managed by a Grand Knight, a man who upholds all his values and oaths of their Knighthood. The Order is also a military organization, assisting the Riviän-Adylith Military in the defense of the Duchy, the protection of the citizens and the preservation of peace. On Becoming a Knight There are two main ways one can become a Knight. The first way someone can achieve Knighthood is by accomplishing a great deed of valor or courage, enough to gain enough recognition to be noticed by the Grand Knight, or to prove his loyalty to the Duke of Riviä enough where they receive the honour of Knighthood. The other way someone can achieve Knighthood by proving their skills and loyalty as a Knight is by becoming a Squire. The Squire would start off as Page around the age of five to ten years old where they would be taught the basics of a Knight's skill set. This would include: basic combat training, learning the Code of Chivalry, proper etiquette, reading, writing, riding, dressing his Lord and maintaining their armour, weapons and horses. Once the boy reaches the age of fifteen, or even older if the lord they are squiring thinks they are unready, they will start to undergo a more advanced stage of training, where they will learn: how to properly speak and write in court, further combat training, assisting his lord in battle as well as anything else if for some reason a lord squired someone beyond the age of ten but before the age of 18. Once the boy finishes his training he is deemed fit and ready for Knighthood by the Knight or Lord, he would then be knighted by either the Duke or Grand Knight where they would then be given a unique title. After the decision that someone should be Knighted, the night before the ceremony the Knight to be would undergo a Vigil. First, the Knight would cleanse his body in a ritual bath, showing purification. After their purification, the man would put on his armour before kneeling in front of an altar, praying in silence until the morning comes. The sword the upcoming knight owns would be placed on the altar, but the man would be prohibited to touch the blade. After the man is ready to be Knighted, the Duke would stand in his hall in front of the man. At the point of this the man would be told to kneel in front of him and speak the Oath of Knighthood, followed by the Oath of Fealty to the Duke of Riviä After the man did his Oath the Duke would repeat the oath and strike the man in the face, so the man would remember his Oaths. After being struck the Duke would unsheathe his blade and dub the man on the shoulder three times. After being dubbed the Duke would tell the man to rise a knight, with his unique title. Privileges of a Knight As a person a knight they acquire certain privileges that some people do not have. The first right the Knight has is to hold the title of ‘Ser’, as well as a one of a kind title given to him by the Duke. The Knight also has a right to take up a Squire, who would be his servant until the boy was ready enough to be knighted himself in the future. Along with that the deeds of the knight would be written down into the Lion’s Codex where they will be remembered for an eternity. Along with this the Knight would be apart of the gentry class, one of the lowest noble ranks there is, unless the knight already belongs to a noble family, which therefore means they can use a personal heraldic achievement. Upon death of the Knight the lands, if received, and titles the Knight obtained would be handed back to the Duke. The titles of Knight are not hereditary unless the Knight's son becomes a Knight himself and the Duke grants him his father’s lands. It should be noted however that a Knight in no ways means above the law. If such laws are broken by a Knight a quick trial would be held despite his rank. Any such behaviour where a Knight leads to breaking a law can lead to punishment. If a Knight breaks their Oath which they swore to remember can lead to severe punishment, from losing their title or to even being executed for their crime. A Knight's Oath Valor in adversity, Truth in speech, Loyalty in service, Humanity in bearing, Charity in compassion, Prowess in action, Defence in need, Justice in judgement, Honour above all. The Oath of Fealty I, [Name] of [Place], upon my life and honor, do hereby swear my Oath of Fealty to you, Duke [Name], of Riviä. In war I shall bring you victory when you assemble your armies. In peace I shall protect your lands and fight injustice. In life, I shall enforce your will and satisfy your demands. In death, I shall give my life for you and die honourably in the hopes my sacrifice was not in vain. My life and sword are your own until you release me, or death takes me. Duke Thomas de Hartcold would squint hard trying to read the letter, instead he gives up giving it to his arch-chancellor to read to him instead.
