~*<>*~ The First Halflings ~*<>~

The modern halflings themselves are the product of halfling and halfling reproduction, however it was not always like this. Long ago in the lands of Aegis when humans and dwarves first came into contact, they mated. These matings often came from the product of too much ale, or perhaps a special joy in the heart of each parent. However, it was not normal for humans and dwarves to mate. It was frowned upon, just as any child that is a product of ale is. The very first half dwarf half humans, not yet halflings, were shunned by their societies, cast into social isolation amongst each other. As these dwarf-humans began to mate among themselves, about the only people they could find, they began to develop their own traits over hundreds of years. Eventually the, now halfling, race developed an extremely short stature, large feet, and a love for ale and parties. The halflings, who lived in the outer villages of Oren or in small communities in the cities, soon refused to fight altogether, not picking up the Orenian blade. Eventually, led by respectful families known as the  Took, Brandybuck, and Goodbody, the halflings formed a single semi-hidden community in the hills. This single community was then carried on in different settlements on different realms. Now the halflings live to about 200, dwell in a peaceful collective community, and have a central governing system for their village.

~*<>*~ The Village ~*<>*~

The current halfling village, Gimblewood, is tucked away in the Dale on the Cloud Peninsula. It is shrouded by forests and hills, but once you get out from under the dark canopy a wide expanse of hills and a sparkling lake underneath a looming mountain stands before your bare-feet. The village is home to the festivals, gatherings, games, farms, and housing.

~*<>*~ Housing ~*<>*~

The village has a restricted amount of burrows, the halfling home of choice, within its rolling hills. This is to avoid over stagnation of the hills, for it is an old saying that “The hills are alive.” The hills are the halflings castles, their shelters, and their dwelling. Without hills a halfling is nothing but a city hobbit. Housing is given to halflings (or hobbits, whichever you prefer) who are active for one Harvest (irl) week and UNIQUE jobs (not nexus, although they can incorporate it into their nexus skills. For example, one halfling  is a therapist, another is a physician.

~*<>*~ Skins ~*<>*~

A halfling skin always consists of the same basic rule, no shoes. A halfling skin can vary from a simple overalls to an intricate coat outfit. One skin to not use however is the generic Bilbo or Frodo one, if you desperately need a unique skin to your customization send me, Cmack, or The Shroom Druid a message.

~*<>*~ The Modern Community ~*<>*~

As of the time of writing this guide the halfling community is active, underneath its cover. Usually, when in the weekdays or busy school/work days, halflings do not boost in activity until a party, festival, or event. But every once in awhile you can find someone walking around the village, approach them and RP, you’ll never know where it can take your character!  To get involved with the community, make reaches out to the other halflings regarding your proffesion. Offer to sell to people your goods or services. The absolute BEST way to get involved with our Halfling Community is to invite everyone to the Inn for drinking, story time, and smoking.

~*<>*~ The Accent ~*<>*~

Almost all halflings speak with a similar accent. There are many variations, it depends on their upbringing and era of birth. The basics are not pronouncing the “t” in the middle of words. You also don’t want to say very confusing words, if its confusing like “complicated”, horten it. Eventually by spending time around other halflings, you’ll pick the accent up

Example:

“Lo’ , tha’ ain’ very comp’ica’ed mis’a.”

Rupert’s More In Depth Guide:

Typically, halflings have a sort of Irish accent from the modern world today, however there are some notable differences.

  • Halflings have a difficult time pronouncing the letter T during mid-statement, however they can easily pronounce it as the first sound of a statement, for example:

Normal: This is a test statement.

Halfling: This is a tes' sta'emen'.

Notice how in “statement,” the first T isn't replaced with an apostrophe. The “st” sound remains pronounceable.

  • Halflings typically don't pronounce the H sound when speaking. You can also drop the “oo” sound in words, and instead replace it with “e” or “a” (You -> Ye, Ya), for example:

Normal: How are you?

Halfling: 'ow are ye?

  • Some accents don't allow the halfling to pronounce the sounds “to” and “too”, and instead would replace them with “ter,” for example:

Normal: What do you have to do today?

Halfling: Wha' do ya 'ave ter do terday?

  • Lots of times, Halflings won't pronounce the "er" sound at the end of a word and instead replace it with "a", for example:

Normal: How are you, Mister Proudfoot?

Halfling: 'ow are ye, Mista Proudfoo'?

Again, the "st" sound will remain strong, but in the word "foot," it would drop the T.

  • Halflings typically don't pronounce "ing", and instead only pronounce the "in'" sound, for example:

Normal: How are you doing today?

Halfling: 'ow are ya doin' terday?

Friendly tips:

  • Your character will be able to pronounce the random consonants in the beginning of words. "Green" is not "'reen,” "more" is not "'ore,” etc.

  • Many halflings choose not pronounce the “th” sound, and instead replace it with a D (That -> Dat). This is completely up to you, however when I learned in mid-Asulon, it was not a typical thing to do.

  • Have fun with it! Mix and match to make your accent unique!

~*<>*~ Being Proper ~*<>*~

The one thing that holds back many halflings is lack of understanding. They do not understand the culture and importance behind being “proper”. What is being proper? Being proper is acting and behaving the way the halflings have been slowly developing for generations since Dunwood in Aegis. The modern properness may be slightly different from Aegis, but there are the same basic principles.A proper hobbit does not wear shoes, wield a blade, wear armor, or live in a city. A proper halfling does live in the hills, wield a shovel, have bare feet, wears halfling garb, worships the Squid or Pumpkin Lord, and drinks ale.

I planned on making a Halfling alt to be immersed in their RP, as it seemed quite fun. He will probably only be used once or twice, but thank you for this guide Heff!
