An Unexpected Arrival

The rains pounded on the tents that still stood. Ryan Darkwood walked to his tent, passing by smoldering ash and dying embers... it had been a long day. The horror scenes from the battle still fresh in his mind and the adrenaline of discovering the terrorist dying down. As he approached his green and brown tent, it soaked with water, but remaining resilient, he noticed something different. A little girl, not more than two was sleeping in a small woven basket outside his home. Covered by a large leaf, she was protected from the rain. Scratching his chin, he removed his Lumidrim helm and kneeled next to the girl.... a note.

 

Dear Ryan,

I understand that it has been a long time since we met... two years. I've missed you more than you can understand, I bore our child when you were gone. I know that you wished to return to Malinor, that's why you left. But, I believe she should grow up on the mainland as well. To grow up in Malin's forest. News has reached us about the Corrupted attacks on the Grove and the Tree. Please keep her safe. I've never decided on a name.

The wood elf stared at the note for a long time. Soaking in every scrap of ink to his mind. She would never set foot on the mainland again... not after what happened. It was up to him to raise this child and he would do his best effort to do so. Taking the basket inside, he began to make preparations.
