[Bug & Feedback] Horse Breeding

I'm saying the opposite, in fact.

It's a fantastic thing to take pride in what you do and by all means continue it, but don't jeopardise others' role-play just because it doesn't meet up to your arbitrary standards.

Doing horse RP for the sake of horse RP is great, and I honestly don't see how this change is going to affect you aside from giving you more competition. People will still come to you to RP. In fact, the addition of other breeders will give players who just want to treat you like a merchant NPC somewhere else to go.

However, the former system was anything but fine. It was a tedious system highly prone to human error and exploitation. It left players hanging while they waited for a GM to answer their modreq to breed every two weeks. Many breeders in fact did not even role-play it, just modreqed and threw a bunch of golden carrots at a GM until they bred the horses for them. It let players work together to exploit the system by moving horses between stables to breed far more often than they were allowed. It made horses become rarer than I think they should have been, perpetuating many more problems like horses disappearing on logout and horse thefts/murders.

The former system was anything but ideal and didn't even encourage good horse RP outside of "build a good-looking and reasonably adequate stable set up for the GM to look at once". In no way does this new system discourage you from providing good role-play, and I personally want to see you continue it. Your horse RP is excellent and I would hate to see it ended because of a change in the system.

The fact is, the amount of people that came to any stable, not just mine, declined more and more as the horse bubble began to pop. Now that anyone can breed, people can pretty much breed another person's horse and walk off with a foal if they have the gold to throw out. I have had so much gold i use blocks to make golden apples for the simple reason that I can.

As for the human error and exploitation. Yes, that's replaced with technical errors and the chance of breaking now. Humans were better in the previous system. One that with very little tweaking, could be fixed up. Yes, it would be hard at first, but it pays off in the fact it would smooth out wonderfully after it had settled. There would be more chance for people to gain a stable.

Yes people didn't really RP breeding the horses. I know I did, I would ask for specific clones of horses when i was doing very intent breeding. I worked to develop breeds in rp to fit roleplay niches for people. Yeah, i can still do that. But I have far less opportunity to do so.

Yes, I can continue what I was doing with a fair amount of ease, there really is no competition for me whatsoever, with this system or without. I have a surplus of everything. My stable is borderline mary-sue because I pretty much have no challenge. I actually want competition, real competition. I want to have to really go head to head with a challenging breeder. I want to be annoyed that someone is better than me. I want to be frustrated that someone is more skilled than I am at a craft and strive to surpass them.

There are nearly fifty horses sitting in my stable with no owners. Fifty chances for a person to RP with. Fifty chances for someone to compete with me. Fifty chances eliminated because someone can't spend a minute or so right clicking a spawn egg.

I could go around, gather up a raid party to go out and rip apart other stables. I could forcibly tear away what newer players have. I could shred them with relative ease by pulling a few strings. But i don't want other players to experience constant heavy loss so i can stimulate something. I don't want to have to butcher people's horses so that maybe they'll come around to by another at my or another person's stable.

I want to be selfish and roleplay, sorreh.

Tell you what: Breeding is so resource-intensive at current times that it is difficult to be a successful breeder on your own terms. Until this is changed, why don't you petition a GM, show him/her your stable and all your efforts, and in return you get a chestful of golden carrots which you can use to breed happily while others run out of money almost instantly.

It's a compromise. I'm not saying I necessarily encourage the compromise, just that it is indeed a compromise and it would indeed fulfil the desired purpose. Because honestly, I don't assess the chances of mechanical breeding being once more removed as particularly large.

As wonderful as this idea seems to be, there is still the matter of no one will want to buy horses anymore, or stop at stables. I managed to get some gold by trade, but with it as consuming as it is, it still takes away rp used to have people buy horses. I liked the old rate cause breeding was less frequent, made people need to come to stables to buy horses and required a proper stable to breed. Also, less people had horses.

I have given away horses just for the sake of RP. Because of I enjoy the rp. But now little to no rp comes to my stables.

Edit:: New bug. I get the "Your mount appears ready to breed with other horses". Okay cool excited. Get another to do the same, baby. YAY! I am happy! Try on two other horses, not only do no babies come, but I also watch as they go for 2 other horses that havent had carrots. wtf? So try again, they take the carrots, i get the message, and again they go AWAY from each other to different horses. Try again with two different horses. Same thing. Now I wasted 2 stacks of golden carrots on horses that wont breed with others with carrots. Okay officially hate the new system.

Double post, yes. But a bug was found. out of ALL my horses, I only got 2 to breed, wasted 2 stacks of carrots, and found that they will take the carrots and go away from others with carrots...wtf?

That's minecraft's default entity AI. It can be modified but the benefit/effort ratio is dangerously low.

Still it shouldn't take 64 carrots to get two horses to ignore each other. At least after the first attempt or something, they shouldnt take any more carrots, or give a "Horse failed to find a mate" after a minute so we know not to try with that horse again.

It doesn't take 64 carrots. I have the numbers right here. I am sorry you were unlucky (very unlucky, i might add. As in I am statistically confident you are exaggerating). Still, bad luck is a part of minecraft. Everybody learns that when they find lava below a diamond after 3 hours of mining. Please do not hyperbole a problem to make your point, as it is misleading to the rest of the community.

I can show you the 12 carrots I have left from my chest. 2 stacks of 64 carrots were used with only the success of 1 pair. I am not exaggerating. Actually its quite insulting that you would say so. I can get you proof I used 2 stacks of carrots on a total of 6 horses and only managed to get 1 foal while the others took the carrots and nothing happened. Not even moving towards each other.

edit: 11 carrots per horse yes? + 6 horses = over 1 stack.

I am not insulting you, just going by the intuition I have obtained as a Physics student. Everybody can produce an empty chest and claim there were X carrots in there. It does not help me. Doing a simple Poisson Calculation, however, I find a  less than 1/500 chance that what you claim happened has actually happened to you. That's <0.2%. Considering this, you will forgive me for not buying your claim at face value.

I dont have to show you an empty chest I can get you chat logs and I can poke the GM who was with me about the carrots. I can prove to you that that "tiny" percentage is actually what happened.

Chat Log.

Hell, I've fed a horse like 2 stacks of apples (roughly, not exagerating at all) before it would be tamed. So unfortunately you're dead wrong about your numbers.
