Wars? Why Do We Promote Them?

Stop giving so many rewards to winning a war, and stop giving losers too much punishment. People will go through great lengths to win, even if it means knowingly break the server rules.

I would actually agree but people will do that whether there is a large reward or if it is just for pride.

To go into more detail, warclaims and raids destroyed Adunia. This benefitted Oren to a degree, but... not us.

50 Adunians, to 10.

That's what War did to us. Did we want it? No. We couldn't have stopped it IC.

Dynamic RP sure.. but.. It wasn't fun. I log on to have fun.

You either have fun through dynamism or realize that you are playing the wrong video game. It is the nature of a fictional world that is ever-evolving. Sorry.

Do you feel we should, not the staff but the players, be promoting constant waring? Do you feel it's an integral part of the server or does it just stem from boredom?

I'm sorry, but Dynamism is what makes LOTC LOTC. Cultures are oppressed and wiped out all throughout IRL history. And if we want the charm of LOTC to remain (that being the escapism and entertainment of living in another world) then Dynamism has to stay.

it stems from boredom, boredom comes from not doing anything. Thats why people go to war, without war there is nothing to RP about and do. like you cant rp eating a sandwich for a few days

It isn't about boredom at all, I can name cases where folks rescinded from the possibility of war. It is integral because you are playing out a fictional world which cannot escape our nature, habits, etc. The former question is loaded, I won't answer it.

Who made it a rule that wars are always dynamic? Sometimes RP is dynamic. Sometimes wars are but it isn't set in stone that an experience will be dynamic.

If the players are promoting war then it's probably because they want war.

If no one found war beneficial or fun then no one would take part in it. If it excites players and keeps them away from boredom, what's the issue?

War has reduced Oren to nothing but military rp, and that was not how it once was... As someone who adores pvp, and dynamic rp, I'm starting to have my fill of war on LotC. I hate to admit it seems more like PvP factions, in the sense that everyone wants to be the next White Rose.

If war is forced upon others, isn't that an issue? I'm not saying I know of a way to prevent this but it stands to say that many groups who are forced into a war won't feel it as dynamic and more of an OOC fight with another group. Perhaps it is the minds of the players that need to change and not the war system.

The high elves have so far figured out how to remain neutral.

Not talking about the high elves. Just because I play one does not mean I speak of them nor is this thread a relative place for one to discuss ones distaste of them. Create another feedback thread for that if you desire.

That's the price of dynamic RP, if you'd like a story/scenario to end the way you want it to, go write a book.

As for OOC drama: It's human nature and not un solvable.

Nope. The BRs are sickening. Human nature is murdering each other for supremacy, but in a video-game we're different. The game isn't separate from real life, but people generally act nicer or meaner (depending on how they act in real life) in a game because it's a possible venting area.

Wars aren't dynamic, they're obsessive, and cause ooc issues. I honestly don't mind a good clomp, but wars started over OOC or stupid OOC leaked into rp shouldn't happen.

PvP's great, wars aren't. Wars frustrate, wars make people hate each other for stupid reasons while adrenaline is rushing.

You're right about it being solvable, but people need to realize this is a enjoyment hub; it's a lax environment we're privileged to pretend to be special, or not-so-special snow flakes of our choice. RP is fun, but it shouldn't be taken realistically and cause genuine feelings of hate or annoyance.

You're right in the end Leo, but remember, all humans are different. I don't mean to seem rude of course, I'm saying I don't agree with your standpoint that it's unavoidable, it is very avoidable if people really tried.

I wonder if it's possible to stage wars over places that aren't all that devastating to player communities...

There was a recent idea topic about wonders in 4.0; what if there were landmarks with national benefits to fight over?

( Here it is, started by Omithiel: http://www.lordofthecraft.net/topic/107349-40-wonders-of-the-world/ )

Wars seem to be what new players come to the server anticipating; they're a key part of international RP - it's just a matter of OOC investment being separated from IC. Also, have the understanding not to destroy the atmosphere others have spent their energy cultivating.

You merely need mature Nation Leaders for wars to be fun. Back in Aegis, Redninja [can't say the same for Ivrae though], Mogroka, meanking [i think that was King of Dwarves?], and I held a mature and fun-oriented approach to our wars. I actually believe that we are nearing that peak - Zezimus can hold his own maturity, M-Gamer is chill, even the Oren Civil War is rather chill save for the few rotten eggs. A group that wants to avoid conflict such as the High Elves have been respected unless I missed something?
