The esteemed common House of Visconti [ne Nicator] forged itself through a swearing of loyalty to Emperor Peter Chivay of the Third Empire of Oren. The Visconti bloodline is riddled with cultural and historical principles and achievements. The youth is nurtured in a liberal way, their parents stimulating the young to advance in the way they desire. The Visconti have prided themselves militarily in their cavalry dash and elan and pedigree. The Visconti claim to be cultural offspring from Aegisian, Asulonian, and Anthosian Southerons, known as Illatian.

The Visconti Saga

The year 1257 carries with it a momentous event that consecrated the survival of mankind upon the continent of Asulon and forward. The Black Dragon's ascension and utmost attendance to the realm of Man after the grand defeat of the Salvian Kingdom saw to man looking outward and drawing all of the spawn of Horen inward for what became a lasting centralization of mankind's power. One such tribe sought after were the Subudain tribes that carried with them a nomadic quality that presided over Asulon longer than the Aegisians who explored the continent after Iblees's rendered destruction of the First Continent. The reforged Teutons, newly acquired by the Black Dragon and the Blackmonts sought to harass the horse tribes on the northern reaches of Auvergne into a steady assimilation into the nationalistic Holy Oren Empire.

One such chieftain of the Subudai did heed the inquiry from the Holy Oren Empire, coming in peaceably to Auvergne and splitting his tribe throughout the Empire. Charagai Noyan, renamed Charlanoyre to fit better with the linguistic abilities of the Auvergnian-tongued, sought to assimilate in the best means possible. He saw to each of his tribesman being placed in regions of the Empire where they could take up trade and professions that would incorporate them into the mercantile fabric of the continent. Charlanoyre kept familial ties close as he engaged in the oft-shunned profession of masonry, the Subudai not taking to permanence in their townships. The Nicatori, a surname adopted and corrupted from the Subudain tongue meaning toughened, established themselves and became educated in Orenian values and civilized ways.

The Nicatori became entranced with the Southeron culture, bearing similar skin tones and the affinity for well-lettered oratory and passionate conducts. They established families with Southeron women, wielding highly fertile yields of children. The Nicatori took special interest in the family known as Visconti, conducting matrimonial links throughout the vast tree and branches of intermediate families who shared affiliations with either family. By then in middle Anthosian history, the Nicatori disposed their Subudain past save for their affinity for equestrian activities and adopted the Illatian custom and tradition aside their Visconti familiars. Through this assimilation, the Visconti became empowered and greater in number through their lessers and have arrived in the Fringe as a House looking yonder the unexplored and made their first steps in the politically unstable time of the late Carrion Dynasty.

As the Scourge began to spill into the Fringe, given the ward broke upon opening, the Viscontis realized that Oren stood as first to receive skirmish and attacks. The threat to be assaulted by the unpalatable Harbingers made them seek a role in the realm of Man. Slowly, the Visconti scholarly combined with the Orenian religious establishment of St. Lucien. Stylites, the father of Leonardo, Johnny, Julian, and Theodosius had given liberty to his young to adopt the religious atmosphere or to seek refuge away from the Scourge's bastion in the southern hemisphere. This caused severe diversity in the house as those who sought refuge pursued practices medicinal and scientific while those who drew towards the battle with the Scourge claimed enlightment and a reforged and religious behavior.

After the passing of Stylites Nicator and Valeria Visconti in the first few years in the Fringe, the eldest brother Theodosius considered his ties to both the major Visconti and the minor Nicatori families. His kin from both sides laid spread across the Fringe, some taking refuge in Alras while others conducted themselves meagrely in the dynastic Oren. Theodosius fled to the wintry wastes of the West, specifically to take oath under Ser Alexei Nicodemus and served the religious order of St. Lucien as an unoathed. Showing his ferver for sums and letters, as well as a curious taste for the heard and unheard, Theodosius rose to become minor chamberlain of Vekaro. The town of Vekaro became the furthest marker of extension of the OSL's control throughout the civil war. Aside from the scant economic participation, Theodosius saw war mostly and became known for his Theodosian Wall that shielded Vekaro from Scourge peons known north of the small town.

Theodosius Visconti ne Nicator became one of the first to enter the court of Emperor Peter Chivay and his camaraderie when they arrived to the Fringe. Having the recommendations of Grandmaster Jack Rovin of the OSL as well as the oratorical skills to prove himself, Chivay enlisted Nicator into the Privy Council of the Third Empire of Oren. The arrangement came into being in year 1457, that Theodosius and his brother Julian Visconti ne Nicator serve as Vicar Stewards of the Empire in the Fringe whilst August Joseph Lane drew up plans for a suspected contingency plan in case a new continent was found. The Visconti rejoiced in the achievements of Theodosius and Julian and found themselves land close to the capital of Kaldonia to settle. A minor estate is formed along the north-eastern boundaries, belonging to the Viscontis. The motto adopted due to the dismal early years of the Orenian Civil War is "You have seen our descent, now watch us Rise!" and "Ave Morituri te Salutant - Hail, those who serve salute you!"

Origins and Evolution of the Illatian People

Humans, and the results of ethnic intermixing between both Southeron and Northerner groups, the Illatian people developed from their originally humble beginnings as simple farmers, settling in the realm of Anthos, under the leadership of the culture’s namesake, Illo the Elder - a title which, in itself, tells much about the strong patriarchal facet of the culture that developed thereafter.

The intermingled nature of Illatian blood is a sign of not only their charm with foreigners, but of a people that, in their formative stages, were unable to resist any invading force. Over many years, the Illatians have been host to the occupation of various forces, whose soldiers often found themselves enamored with Illatian women, to whom they might have returned after any number of wars. More often than not, however, Illatian women were left with the bastard children of these soldiers, who were then born and raised, with all their various differences, in an Illatian environment. This is but one factor in the diversity of Illatian ethnicity, which ranges from blonde-haired and blue-eyed, to olive-skinned and dark-haired, to the occasional copper-skinned individual of eastern descent. Thus, it is clear that attempting to label Illatians as a sub-race is futile.

The rapid growth of the Illatian culture is due to the aforementioned mixing; with a myriad of connections and origins, the Illatian people found themselves benefiting from much trade and introduced technological advances. However, throughout the ages, key aspects of Illatian culture have endured, harkening back to its people’s first years as subsistence farmers. These traditions manifest themselves in the most basic of human existence - diet, family structure, personality, etc. However, as a new age dawns upon Illatia, a cultural rebirth brings with it revolution in architecture, fashion, and the arts.

THE FOUR PILLARS OF ILLATIAN CULTURE:
- PASSION - ART - FAITH - FORTITUDE -

Passion in their social interactions -
This cultural pillar manifests itself in Illatian culture primarily in social interaction; Illatians are known to be ardent lovers, expressive speakers, and smothering parents. Even towards an enemy, an Illatian is hospitable.

Just as an Illatian’s amicability is intense (often to the point of being overwhelming!), an Illatian’s wrath is a frighteningly violent experience. Insulting a member of a typically close-knit family is sure to incur the full force of every member’s anger. Illatians are not only horrendously vocal in their arguments, but all-too-eager to put their threats into action. Feuds could easily last generations, if not for the commonplace dispute resolution that is a hearty meal shared across a dinner table.

In saying this, it must be known that Illatians are not fools, to be manipulated by way of their strong emotions. As an originally agrarian culture, Illatians are typically shrewd hagglers, and often tight-fisted in expenditure. As will be discussed in the intertwined cultural pillar of art, Illatian minds are naturally suited to deep thinking. The cultural mindset seems to be one conducive to producing philosophers and scientists among the higher classes.

CUISINE
Their unbridled outpouring of emotion manifests itself in their culinary creations; Illatian cuisine is rustic, with origins amongst peasants, who made the most of affordable foods, but is served in plentiful quantities. The kitchen of an Illatian household is the centre of family life. Daughters are trained early by their mother to be capable homemakers themselves, yet even Illatian men are adept in front of a stovetop.

When one thinks of a traditional Illatian meal, two dishes typically come to mind, though there are countless more:
The first, and most common, is that of many, many small pieces of thin, unleavened dough of flour, water, and egg, usually served with a sauce of the ‘ganello’ fruit, commonly grown in Illatian gardens. This dish is known as ‘biso’.
The second can easily be imagined as the invention of a bored, hungry Illatian peasant, who, one day, eating a loaf of bread, wondered what it would taste like covered with ganello sauce, and cooked over a woodfire. Some amount of cheese, sliced meat, and herbs later, the dish known as ‘petta’ is now commonplace in Illatian households.

LOVE AND AFFECTION
Illatians are infamous paramours, loyal spouses, and very sensitive. Despite the fact that almost all Illatian marriages are matches made by parents, these marriages are generally love-filled and fruitful. Illatians do not perceive ‘love’ as something that can only exist between two ‘star-crossed’ lovers, but, perhaps thanks to a deeper understanding of different forms of love (familial, romantic, parental, brotherly, etc.), Illatians are inclined to show all they know some form of love. As such, it is easy for one to ‘make oneself love’ another.
Once arrangements have been made between parents, courting comprises of the man’s presentation of a gift and a kiss for his prospective wife. From this initial meeting, the couple are taught a complex dance by their village elder - with the title, ‘Illadoro’, and his wife, the ‘Illenia’. This dance will be performed at their eventual wedding, and ends with each sharing a goblet of wine. They then retreat to their new house, or room in the man’s father’s house, which has been prepared by the groom in the months prior. Therein, the marriage is consummated.
Illatians display their affection openly, much to the embarrassment of foreign visitors. However, though the husband might publicly possess a position of authority, in the privacy of the household, the input of the wife is ‘highly valued’.

Perhaps strange for foreigners is the open display of friendship between males, as well as females. It is common for friends of the same gender to hold hands or interlock arms as they walk about casually.

CONFLICT
As passionate in conflict as they are in love, Illatian people will engage in terrible, loud, and furious arguments, sometimes over the most petty of issues. It is humourously said that an Illatian friendship’s quality can be valued according to the frequency of their fights. However, arguments amongst Illatians rarely last more than a few days, as the community will band together that the conflict is resolved. This happens over a shared meal, sometimes a village feast. The apparent vacillation of this cultural oddity often stupifies foreigners, who might be put upon edge as two burly Illatians roar at each other from across the village in the morning, and, twelve hours later, are found dining together, laughing away their troubles.

Disputes with non-Illatians, however, are likely to develop a long-harboured grudge if not resolved.

ART
CREATIVITY AND EXPRESSION

ARCHITECTURE
Humble beginnings are evidenced by the mastery of such materials as cobblestone in Illatian architecture. The oldest Illatian settlements are truly rustic in their appearance; rough stone features extensively in traditional architecture - from cottages to castles. A small Illatian town’s layout is typically full of twists, turns and alleyways, and are typically established upon high ground. Illatians are also famed for their grand bridge-building. This traditional Illatian architecture is rustic, solid, and strong in character.

However, a new movement sweeps across Illatian culture, one of enlightenment and revolution in art and mindset. This has begun to manifest itself in an increasingly artistic approach to architecture. More ostentatious in its flamboyant use of pillars, domes, steeples, and cornices,  and aesthetically stimulating in the artistic use of colour, this style has also introduced the painting of historical and/or religious scenes upon the interiors of major buildings. Such a work of art is known as a ‘cielovista’.

SPEECH & PRONUNCIATION OF WRITTEN SPEECH
Illatians are easily identifiable by their excitable, articulated speech, delivered with enthusiasm and musicality. Despite their artful, poetic use of language, it is through their erratic waving of their hands that most meaning is conveyed. In their upbringing, an Illatian subconsciously develops a natural affinity for talking ‘with their hands’. As well as this, an Illatian is typically loud and boisterous, and might often (unintentionally) invade one’s personal space.
The Illatian tongue might be regarded as elegant as that of the elves, in its natural flow and rhythmic expression of the soul. Many a maiden has swooned at the mere utterance of Illatian words. The main features of this language are:
- Clear elocution; facial muscles are endlessly exercised.
- ‘R’s are rolled.
- Vowels have only one sound, unlike the Common Tongue.
- The digraphs [ch] and [gh] indicate hardness when used before and [e].
- The digraphs [ci] and [gi] indicate softness when used before [a], [o], and .

e.g., for you Americani:
(Illatian) Gia = (Common Tongue) “Ja”
(Illatian) Che = (Common Tongue) “Ke”
Ca = “Ka”  |  Che = “Ke”  |  Chi = “Ki”  |  Co = “Ko”  |  Cu = “Ku”
Cia = “Cha”  |  Ce/Cie = “Che”  |  Ci = “Chi”  |  Cio = “Cho”  |  Ciu = “Chu”

That should be the basics; investigate Italian itself if there are any other worries.

FASHION
Even as peasants, Illatians find ways to appreciate the finer tastes in life. There is no such thing as ‘too much colour’ in Illatian culture, evident in their clothes more than anything else. Illatian commoners might often dress garishly, with no apparent theme to their outfit, often decorated with colourful patches where damaged by village life.
Wealthier Illatians, however, seem to possess something of a taste in fashion. Extravagant materials are often used in pleasant combinations in a plethora of styles, adorned with laces and silken sashes. In addition to fanciful fabrics, it might be observed that many wealthy Illatian men possess an unhealthy obsession with headwear. Male wardrobes are crammed with hats of all shapes and typically made of such materials as wool, felt, and leather. Notable ‘must-haves’ amongst Illatian men include berets, flat caps, and roundlets. Illatian men are always on the hunt to initiate a new headwear trend...

FAITH
RELIGIOUS DEDICATION
Illatians are traditionally fervent followers of the One True Faith, with it occupying a central, unifying position in communities, and in households. An Illatian will hear no ill spoken of the beloved clergy to whom they look to for guidance and peaceful conscience.
Illatians are earnest in their church attendance, and often send their children to help with the maintenance of their diocese - gardening, assistance of priests, etc.

AVERSION TO MAGIC
This uncompromising religious dedication leads the Illatian people to fervently shun any form of magic that is not of the Creator. It is understood that magic is from ‘the Void’, and therefore a product of evil. A foreigner entering an Illatian community is warned against magic. If magic use is witnessed by an Illatian, they will make immediate steps to slap the user across the left cheek twice, and spit at their feet. Use of magic in an Illatian household will result in an immediate expulsion, as well as all cooked food in the house being thrown out for fear of its being cursed - usually upon the foolish mage’s head.
As a devoutly religious, and superstitious people, the Illatians

Infamous and/or Notable Events

1. Involvement in the 1420s Civil War

When the Carrion Dynasty first migrated into the Fringe, the towns of Vekaro and eventually Kvaz were founded. Theodosius Visconti ne Nicator migrated into the Fringe as a young man, around the age of fifteen as a common sellsword. Upon his coming of age, Theodosius became involved in the highly volatile religious atmosphere, taking an oath with Ser Alexei Nicodemus of the Order of Saint Lucien. Soon, orthodoxy sought to split twain from supposed heterodoxy with the Lucienists declaring Ruskan Orthodoxy as a heretical strain and pursued military campaigns from Aeschwald into Carrion-centric territories. Theodosius Nicator took part in multiple skirmishes, most notably the Battle for Vekaro which tilted towards a Lucien victory and saw the town capitulated and captured. Theodosius, taking into account the requirement to fortify against Carrion and the Scourge, laid brick to brick and constructed the Theodosian Wall to stand between Vekaro and a grossly active Scourge portal that allowed Harbingers to pass through and attack Orenites in their time of division.

2. Early Kaedrini Imperium-era Coal Miner Union Revolt Putdown

With the entire realm of Man united under Emperor Peter Chivay, some families of Raevirs took to highwayman and banditry activities to harass the wide expanse of Empire. Disguising their actions as a Lucien-esque heretical persecution, Raevirs took to attacking Kal'Arkon of the Dwarfish Kingdom with exclamations in the name of Saint Hunwald. Emperor Chivay collected the levies of certain noble and common Houses, Visconti included and marched to the eastern reaches of the Third Empire. After a failed pincer with Pascali militiamen being killed, Visconti and Silverblade soldiers fought Raevir armies and pushed them all the way from Kal'Arkon to Mount Augustus. Such action by cavalry and infantry of the two houses earned the Grand Marshal's initial respect.

3. The Capital of Kaldonia becomes a Metropolis

Through the shrewd and kind dealings between incoming migrants to the capital, Julius and Theodosius Visconti have garnered the capital of the Third Empire a metropoli-like status. The capital is brimming, a blacksmith constructed and a tavern bustling typically under the hand of Russo and Visconti employees.

A tavern sits by the side of the road. All of its surroundings seem to have deserted it. No homes, no trees, no farmers. This tavern is a loner, but hearty bellows and loud thumps still come from within it. While there is no one to be seen outside, it is still surprisingly busy within.

A long, broad table occupies the vast majority of the airy drinking establishment. Each seat at this table is taken by a man who has been passed the point of drunk for quite some time. In a dark corner of the room sits a hooded figure as he stares at a drunkard who has made his way on top of the table and has begun dancing to the tune of the slurred singing of the other inhabitants of the table.

The hooded man shifts in his seat as the singing dies and the dancing man jumps off the table with a laugh. As this man goes to sit in his seat again he catches a glimpse of the dark figure and yells out, "Well! Seems we've got a starer over here!" The drunkard hiccups and stumbles toward the hooded man. "I saw you staring a little while ago and now I find you staring still?! You got a problem with me, friend?"

The hooded man shifts again and narrows his eyes. Suddenly he unsheathes two daggers and shrugs his cloak to the ground. Out of sudden surprise the drunkard lashes out his fist to meet the attacker's face. With one punch the man falls to the ground and blacks out. The drunkard turns to the table of observers and chuckles as he points to the man on the ground, "Well, it looks like mister dagger man fell asleep!" The table erupts in laughter as Octavian Visconti struts back to his seat.

As he sits down he looks to his friends, "Now... what was I saying before you all started to sing?"

"Ye' were tellin' us yer story, Oc," blurts out a man at the end of the table.

"That's right! Well let's continue, shall we?"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I had just reunited with my family. I couldn't be happier. I hadn't met them before but just to be with my true family again was good enough for me. Sitting down for supper was the best part. I hadn't felt that kind of joy since my mom and pop left for their glorified adventure to never return. They accepted me and I accepted them.

I knew from the beginning that I could fight for these people. I could do my best for them because I knew they deserved it. No one was going to touch them or harm them if I had anything to say about it. I can even remember one day when some blundering idiot went and knocked over one of the children as they walked by each other on the street. I saw from a few buildings away and bolted myself as fast as I could towards them. I tackled that **** to the ground so fast and hard that he wasn't even conscious when I began to punch in his nose. Three men had to pull me off that bastard before I stopped. It's too bad he lived."

Octavian takes a swig of his heavy ale and gulps it down loudly.

"Ahhhhh..." he exhales. "So now I'm just doing what's best for the family. I'm looking for a position that suits my family's interests," he raises his mug and gestures to all the men sitting at the table, "I'm making new friends," he tilts back his head and finishes off the last of his drink,"and I'm getting drunk!" Octavian raises his mug high above his head, "To family and to friends!"

The tavern repeats his words, "TO FAMILY AND TO FRIENDS!"

"Form up five horsemen in a row, form rows behind when the prior is finished!", barked Theodosius as he stood on a slight incline overlooking the cavalry array. The cavalrymen, some veteran and others green, formed up neatly along the grasslands due south of Ivybend. Marcel, fully dressed in gothic plate, sauntered his armored warhorse to Theodosius's side. The cavalry formed an alae or wing along the Western flank and informed to wait whilst the infantry stormed and climbed atop the walls of Lindale. With the barking command of the Grand Marshal, a coarse alerting to the frayed nerves of cohorts, the many rows of infantry undulated as they broke for a run to the Lindale Walls. The trumpeting and cries of men, steel and stone accompanied with the creaks of trebuchet arms flooded the surroundings in a din of noise and forced the cavalry to look to their commanders for utterance and the movement of lips.

The eastern flank dispersed with news of a Dwarfish sally from Kal'Arkon aided by Orcish warbands. Looking to Marcel as his lower jaw folded into a sly grin, Theodosius looked over his shoulder and raised his javelin. Banging the javelin against shield, the command to aid the eastern flank sounded and many hoofs followed. Riding along the road to Kal'Arkon from Lindale, the cavalry alae soared through the farmlands and charged with couched lances and tossed javelins into the Dwarfish-Orcish lines. The sally faltered with some Orcs and Dwarfish being flung into the river to the east, buckets of boiling oil cast down as a last resort to hold off the charging lancers. The Marshal filed infantry behind the cavalry charge to aid as the horsemen withdrew, the combined forces of Orcs and Dwarves split asunder save for a last stand at the Silverblade Keep.

On the return to the Capital, Theodosius Visconti looked proudly upon his cavalrymen. He sighed with a heave of relief, noting "This battle is worthy of a triumph, we shall celebrate my men".

AEMONDO AEDALFIERI VISCONTI

THE BASTARD OF HOUSE VISCONTI

FEATURES:

- The sleazy, hairy, filthy, reeking young man might be considered 'ruggedly handsome' if it were not for his obscene presentation.

- Weathered by life as a common sell-sword, he is moderately built, though rather out of shape upon returning to his natural father, Frederick Visconti.

PERSONALITY:

- Egregious.

- Hedonist.

- Hot-tempered. Volatile emotions.

HOBBIES/INTERESTS:

- Debauchery. Drinking.

- Swordplay.

SKILLS:

- Confidently wields a bastard sword (when sober).

- Horse-riding (when sober).

- Brawling.

- Charming wenches.

BACKSTORY OVERVIEW:

Aemondo, bastard son of Frederick Visconti, borne of one of many young loves in the heat of his father’s twenty-first year, was the sole stain upon the esteemed family’s name. Up until this moment, he had been the best-kept secret in the Capital. However, the steps Frederick had taken to hide this secret were only ever temporary, considering the nature of this womanising, erratic, and volatile man - a bastard in every sense of the word.

For near seventeen years, this individual had been hidden away, beyond the claws of any noble house - within the Church. There was no chance, however, that this boy would have lasted among the venerated clergy. Though he acquired an education, Aemondo never did appreciate the values of a scholarly life, instead preferring a life of debauchery. No censure seemed to curb his hedonistic pursuits, and, before his eighteenth year, he was expelled from the Church after being caught in the act of adultery with a servant-girl, much to the horror of his peers, however unsurpised they may have been.

From there, he took on the surname 'Aedalfieri', and the life of a sellsword, his contracts taking him across the realm, though rarely in honourable pursuits. It was in this time that he acquired some skill with the blade, and appropriated his beloved bastard sword.

Darius Alexander Visconti

Features

Darius is a stump man, a short stature with a fairly miniscule lower body however a wide upper body with broad shoulders, broader and wider than a regular man his age. His renown body stature is the main fault in the way he runs, an odd waddle whilst he uses his broad arms as a balance weight for his little legs. Despite his lack off speed, agility and stamina he is tremendously strong with his upper body and arms, his legs however are like feeble twigs, prone to any sign of injury to the vulnerable bones. Darius has no head hair either besides a short stubble of a beard, the top of his head remains completely bald.

Personality

Darius is a grumpy little bastard, he doesn't take kindly to sympathy as he see's it a sincere sign of weakness and in fact takes great offense. Darius likes to settle his affairs in a good old fashioned brawl with the one who's face remains mostly in tact winning. Darius is also a proud man and takes pride in his honor amongst men, if a challenge arises from a threat, Darius wouldn't be hesitant in fighting despite the odds, some consider this a foolish action however to a man that considers his pride his greatest asset, it's entirely necessary. However in spite of this solid exterior and stern interior, Darius is a man of family, and puts forth the safety and protection of his blood above all other priorities in life.

Interests/Hobbies

Growing up as a child, Darius took to the steppes for work as a Lumberjack. At the age of 13 his father saw plenty of strength in the boy and sent him out of the city to work for the Lumber mill. Darius learned all the necessary skills to being a successful Lumberjack, and earned himself a suitable wage for the work he did. Prior to returning home from his working days, at the age of 16 he enlisted into the city guard where he trained and learned the skills of combat and warfare. Darius' personal trainer saw great potential in the boy, his strength from working in the Lumber Mills worked wonders when wielding his most preferred weapon, the two handed Masterwork curved blade. When Darius seemed to be performing at his prime, he started skipping training sessions to attend the illegal pit fighting sessions in the city slums where he made his mark among the common men as a heavy bruiser when it came to a good old fashioned punch up.
