History

Clan Ublu is not a Clan with a glorious, sprawling history. Instead it is one that was formed recently, much to the distaste of the other clans. Clan Ublu is made up of Goblins who have thrown away their jobs of hard labour and banded together to form a Clan which orchestrates freedom for all Goblins.

 

During the Sun's Smile, 1507, Clan Ublu declared itself politically and diplomatically aligned with Vrogak'Gorkils Rexdom. The Clan began it's quest to become a recognised Clan and ultimately have it's Chieftain, Deka'Ublu sit as a Wargoth on the Wargoth Council.

 

Traditions and Customs

 

Way of life

 

Unlike most Goblin clans of the past, large mechanisms are quite rare. While the Goblins still have more sophisticated systems compared to the other Orcs of the Rexdom, they aren’t on the scale of mechanisms made in the past by Goblins. To an outsider, the Goblins of Clan Ublu would seem to be more sophisticated and cultured than their Orcish kin.

 

Clan Ublu has been seen as rather indifferent on Orcish politics, and tends to keep to itself when it comes to infighting amongst the Orcs. It is strange that they take this path, due to their history of oppression from their Orcish brothers. It is hypothesised that the reason the Goblins are so indifferent is so that they can prove that they are not just savages. Another theory is that they wish to avoid conflict so they do not get crushed by the Orcs and end up slaves again.

 

The Goblins of Clan Ublu are very closely knit, it seems that they only deem each other as trustworthy. The Ublu Goblins typically act suspicious towards outsiders, even if they’re Orcs or other Goblins. This has been credited to their defensiveness of Clan stability and integrity, which the leaders of the Clan keep so tightly to their chest.

 

The Clan venerates the Ubluhar, the Spirit of Hope and new Beginnings. From what has already been said, it is obvious why the Goblins chose this Spirit as their Clan’s patron.

 

Ceremonies

 

Ceremony of birth

This ceremony occurs at the birth of a new Clan member. The infant Goblin is paraded around the Clan’s settlement, their Clan members shouting blessings upon them. The infant is then given it’s first meal and drink, then it is placed under a tree sapling to be blessed by Ubluhar.

 

Ceremony of preparation

This ceremony comes before battles, and stands out as the most barbaric and frenzied of the clan’s Ceremonies. The Clan members due to go to war are given a glorious feast, they then dance around the fire in glorious worship of the spirits, asking for their blessings. Finally the warriors are painted the Clan’s paints of war, and given their war mask (the top of a coyote’s skull). The war mask has the horns of a ram where the coyote’s ears would be. The Goblins then spend the night in the Clan’s sapling garden where they ask for Ubluhar’s unique blessing.

 

Ceremony of victory

The surviving warriors return home full of cheer, although this is suppressed in the ceremony. The warriors meet their families again before returning to the sapling garden where they spend the day thanking Ubluhar and Krug for their victory and survival. This ceremony is followed by a mass Ceremony of death for those who died.

 

Ceremony of defeat

The ceremony of defeat is a sad one, the surviving warriors return home silently through the gate, return to their homes and mourn for their losses before coming back out during the night (or the next day’s night, if they returned home at night time) for a massed Ceremony of death for those lost.

 

Ceremony of death

A ceremony in which the bodies and the war masks (just the latter if the body could not be found, if the war mask couldn’t be found either a replica is made) of those deceased are burned on a pyre. Once a Ublu goblin dies, a week is left spare incase another Goblin perishes, the Goblins who perish in this week share a ceremony. There is no chants, just silence as the bodies/masks are burned. The Goblins then return their homes for a night’s mourning. It is considered disrespectful to speak of those who are dead unless it is glorifying their name.

 

Trials

 

Trial of Adulthood

 

The young Goblin is rowed out to an isolated Island, given a knife and told to escape the Island. The Goblin is then left stranded, if they return to the Clan they are regarded as an adult, there are no questions asked about how they escaped, and Clan members are forbidden from speaking of how they escaped.

 

Trial of Assimilation

 

The Goblin wishing to join the Clan is taken to a more savage island and is dropped off without a single tool. They are told to return to the clan. The trial is essentially the same as before, no questions are asked and the Clan member is forbidden from speaking of how they escaped. No prejudice towards them will be had.

 

The Proving

 

The proving is a religious way of settling a diplomatic situation. The one pushing for something diplomatic will be given a task, usually one of extreme difficulty. If they can complete the task their terms are accepted, if not they are denied (usually the one trying to push the terms is dead if they fail anyway). It is believed that it is the will of the spirits that determine whether or not the one to be proven succeeds.

 

Clan Roles and Status

 

Chieftain

 

 

The total leader of the Clan, he decides what's going to happen and when its going to happen. He is usually the Goblin with greatest spirit.

 

Elder

 

This clan member is usually an ex-Chieftain who has stepped down, a very old Goblin, or a Shaman. They act as the Chieftain's advisor.

 

Kinsman

 

The Kinsman is the fully assimilated of the Clan, they’ve passed their trials and act as the backbone of the Clan.

 

Outsider

 

A rather misleading term, as it simply means one who hasn’t been initiated. A Goblin born into the clan can be an Outsider, as they haven’t yet undergone their trials. Outsiders are often barred from participating in Ceremonies, although they are permitted to still fight for the Clan.
