GloriaPreussens 798 Share Posted September 30, 2015 A Sun Sets Aulfr knelt down on the bank of a river, his charger stood behind him grazing. Birds chirped and the water made a soft gurgle, but all this was meaningless. Staring down, the Knight saw the face of his friend, lifeless and dumped without ceremony. With a grief stricken heart, Aulfr lifted the waterlogged carcass and forced his charger to carry himself and his charge to Peremont. A black night, he arrived with no ceremony and brought out Denis de Bar. The two exchanged no words, and rallied the household and all the Vindicators. The men set to work with bitter tears and broken hearts, the women wept and the children clung to the legs of mothers and sisters and aunts. A great pyre was raised and upon it was lain the half rotten corpse of the Duke of Drusco, Sergius de Bar. Son of Guy de Bar, a good lord, a firm man, a brave warrior. But above all, to the gathered, Sergius was a friend. The fire consumed the flesh quickly, and the gathered wept or stood silent vigil. A life taken too soon, yet another friend to many passed, slain in cold blood by nameless curs. So many had fallen these days, and so many lives destroyed. Sergius was but one of many. As the night grew old and Dawn came, the fire waned and smoldered to ash. Another sun had set on the House of Ashford. A friend and brother was lost, and a wound was wrought which, for many, would never heal.
