Born in Mid Athera a few years after his older brother Hakon, Sven was the second son of Eirik Ruric, another child destined for greatness, instead of being taught the arts of war by his father, he was taught the arts of writing and politics, Sven took an interest in poetry at a young age, and it soon evolved into tales and songs, at the young age of fourteen, his songs and tales were already renowned and spread across the lands of Norland, he continued studying the bardic arts amongst other things, and soon became a renowned infantry soldier amongst the ranks of the Seahelm Warband, he was proficient in heavy armor, martial weapons, and soon went on to become one of the best archers in Norland.

Shortly after moving to Nyrhold, his elder brother took on the mantle as Patriarch of House Ruric and Baron of Nyrhold, Hakon quickly fell ill, and this forced Sven into a position of power which he did not necessarily wan't, regardless, he led the people's of Norland and settled down, marrying a commoner named Astrid, they had one child, a son named Thomas who was later dubbed "The Rat". Under Sven's leadership Norland barely held itself together, and the people yearned for a stronger leader, he was inexperienced, though he would soon gain some, Beo, Sven's cousin who was tasked with holding old Norland for the Eirikson's had betrayed The Holy Orenian empire, and his own family, declaring himself and the lands of Old Norland which he did not even own independent from The Holy Orenian empire, Sven was outraged, and wrote to the Emperor, together they rallied a large force to repel the Edvardson rebels who were aided by both the Savage Orcs, and Stout Dwarves, no siege was needed, as the cocky rebellion force marched through the snow to attempt an ambush on unsuspecting Oreners, the Orenian force, with aid from their network of spies had known of the plot, and was prepared for it, the two armies clashed, and the battle was over in minutes, a clear Orenian victory, the lands of Avar were re-secured by House Ruric.

Years later, Sven with his ever-growing leadership skills decided it was time to move back to their original Vailorian homeland, Avar, a court case was started between the regent of Lorraine and Sven, Sven wished to leave Lorraine in order to move back to his homeland, and dissolve his allegiance to house D'Amaury, after a grueling 3 years in court, it was ruled that it was illegal for the D'Amaury's to vassalize house Ruric in the first place, and such could be considered treasonous as they we're already vassals of the Crown, overjoyed with the ruling, Sven returned home to Nyrhold, and hastily packed everything of value, then moved back to Avar, soon sprucing up Seahelm and Frostholm back into a working order, under Sven's leadership, Seahelm was completely re-built bigger and better than ever, and the Construction of Frostholm was finally finished, the Castle was extremely imposing, and intimidating. War broke out between the Empire and the Dreadlands, a group composed of both the infamous bandit group, the Flays and the Mercenary group, Dunamis, the Nortruppen, the reformed Ashguard were the main fighting force against the Dreadlands, and soon, the only one, the Holy Orenian Empire had taken to cowering during Raid's and Skirmishes, Sven was disgusted by these acts of cowardice, and rebelled from the Empire, siding with the Dreadlands.

The Orenian Empire fought multiple skirmishes with the Dreadlands, each one a decisive Dreadlandic victory, there skill and tactices were unmatched, but Oren's number's were far greater, they met for an all out skirmish, and while it was close, Oren Inevitably won and beat back the Dreadlander forces, the siege of Seahelm could barely be called a siege, and so it was called the sacking of Seahelm, the horde's of Oren rushed through the Seahelm walls, and slaughtered everyone, man, women and children, few survived the slaughter, and the remnants of Norland became refugee's, fleeing to the Dreadlands, broken, beaten, and saddened, Sven spiraled into a deep sadness himself, allowing his son Thomas to take over, he never recovered from his brooding however, and has not been seen much since the loss of Seahelm.

Hakon Ruric (Malgonious) - Knight of the Holy Imperium, dubbed Ser Hakon, "The Shipwright," Ruric by John Horen the First. Previous Patriarch of House Ruric, Count of the Bonefort and Baron of Nyrhold. Dubbed "The Mighty" by his family and kinsmen for slaying over one thousand foes of Norland with his mighty war bands and raiding parties.  First-born of Eirik Ruric. (Eirikson)

Born in Mid Athera, Hakon was destined for greatness, under the teachings of his father, Eirik "The Great" Ruric, Hakon soon mastered Battle strategy, politics, and the arts of martial, blunt and exotic weaponry as well as heavy armor and even mastered advanced Cavalry techniques, like horseback archery and jousting, he used these skills to repel Dunamite invaders from his homeland, and combat Urguanite forces during sieges and skirmishes, he formed the Ashguard in Mid Athera originally to combat Dunamite raiders during their infamous midnight raids on Nyrhold, he whipped the previous red brothers and members of the Seahelm Warband into shape, soon the Ashguard was considered a group of tough warriors that had proved their worth on the battlefield under the command of Hakon constantly.

During the battle of Hoar hill, Hakon was struck, through his leg with a spear, despite all the surgeon's of the land's greatest efforts, the wound festered and became infected, Hakon became so sickly that he was bedridden for nearly 7 years while he fought off the infection, he nearly perished multiple times, yet continued to fight, despite being very weak, his family was supportive, all but his father who looked down on Hakon for his weakness. After a few years his father died from natural causes in Felsen, this sent Hakon into a deep sadness much like his younger brother Sven. After Hakon's brooding and mourning had subsided, he felt determined and invigorated, his leg began to heal, and finally when he fully recovered he took his rightful place as Patriarch of house Ruric.

Hakon immediately reformed the Ashguard and disbanded the new "Red Brothers" same as his father had so fervently disbanded them in the past, soon after, he lead his people to Axios through some sort of Portal. After docking their boat on the Isle of Asul he led his people into another great era which is considered the greatest by the people of Norland by redoubling efforts of cultural reform, and military reforms, promoting generals, artists and writers to shine and share their works.

The Ashwood Tree

Spoiler

(Name) Ashwood Tree

General use:  it's syrup makes for a strong drink, it's certainly not healthy though, and it makes for a powerful sterilizer, and disinfectant.

Description:

fQfn8b3.jpg

Ashwood, originally located on an island in Vailor named Avar is a cousin of the Elderwood which has been long used as a symbol of hope, and longevity to the peoples of Norland. The Ashwood is a deciduous tree that is able to be burnt, yet not harmed by flames, it’s bark is nearly as hard as steel when still attached to the tree.

The ashwood tree, similarly to it’s cousin, the Elderwood tree only retains it’s amazing properties when it is alive, however, unlike it’s cousin, it cannot be shaped into walls, houses, weapons armor etc it’s bark is too hard for that, it simply grows into a beautiful tree with near uncuttable bark.

Every spring, the Ashwood tree grows brown, orange and yellow leaves, gathering the small amount of sunlight that it needs, then in the summer, the tree secretes a powerful flammable liquid which is called “Ash Syrup”, and eventually, the heat will light the tree on fire, burning away it’s leaves and dying bark, this can be done manually if the climate is too cold for the tree to catch fire naturally, if the Ashwood tree catches fire too early in the summer, and the leaves die too quickly, this can leave the tree in a sickly state for the rest of the year, however, if the fire is started before the tree has secreted enough Ash Syrup, it will not burn the leaves fully, and they will fall off at the end of summer, leaving the tree in a fair state of health.

potseed310.jpg

Once a year during spring, it drops a giant heavy dark seed from it’s branches, these seeds can live up to 2 years before they lose their use, the seed is extremely heavy, and must be carried by multiple people.

Ashwood can be burned by natural, and magic fire, though the only type that will cause harm to the tree is the latter, not all types of magic fire can burn this tree, however, beings with overwhelming strength harness the power to harm the tree with fire, however it’s certainly not the easiest way to harm the tree.

Ash Syrup can be consumed, and it acts as a heavy depressant, giving a similar effect to alcohol, it tastes horrid however, and is often used by performers to spit fire, the liquid is known to cause hallucinations, sluggish movement, and dulled senses, it is a powerful sterilizer and disinfectant.

The Tree’s weakness lies in its soil, since the tree is deciduous and does not have leaves for over half the year, it cannot absorb as much sunlight as other trees, it mainly relies on nutrition from the soil and water.

After many hundreds of years, the tree will die, burning itself with a spectacular blaze until it’s burnt into nothing but ashes and a single dark seed buried underneath the ground, this process usually lasts two weeks of non-stop burning.

Drunken Norlander song

Well a Norlander clad in plate,

left the hall one evening fair,

and one could tell by how he walked,

he had drunk more than his share,

he fumbled ‘round,

till he could no longer keep his feet,

and he stumbled off into the grass,

to sleep beneath the street,

about that time two young and lovely girls of Oren, just happened by

one says to the other with a twinkle in her eye,

“See yon sleeping Norlander,

so strong and handsome built?

I wonder if it’s true,

what they don’t wear beneath their belt,”

They crept up on that Norlander as quiet as could be,

pulled down his pants about an inch,

so that they could see,

and there, behold, for them to view,

beneath that Norlanders pants,

was nothing more than god,

had graced him with upon his birth,

they marveled for a moment,

then one said, we must be gone,

lets leave a present for our friend

before we move along,”

as a gift they left a blue silk ribbon,

tied in a bow, around his great longsword,

the Norlanders pants did drop and show,

now the Norlander woke to natures call,

and stumbled towards the trees,

Behind the bush he drops his pants,

and gawks at what he sees,

and in a startled voice he says,

to what’s before his eyes,

“Lad I don’t know where you been,

but I see you won first prize!”

Song of Norland

Strength and Honor is what we seek!

Off in our longboats so mighty and sleek!

The land of Horen so bland and bleak!

Weakness and scum is what we reap!

Gold and loot is what we now reek!

Back to Norland so mighty and fine!

We wash off the blood, we wash off the brine!

A celebration with ale and wine!

Brawling and singing, a merry ole time!

Glory to Norland so mighty and fine!

Iron from ice! is what we shout!

Oren flees with brothers about!

They fear death when we charge out!

Help! they scream while we make them route!

We’ll smack their ass and make them pout!

Back to Norland so mighty and fine!

We wash off the blood, we wash off the brine!

A celebration with ale and wine!

Brawling and singing, a merry ole time!

Glory to Norland so mighty and fine!

By Sven "The Bard" Ruric.

The men of Oren so Brave

The men of Oren so brave!

To battle in chainmail they go,

they’re skirts and make-up just so,

When they meet the Norland steel,

they’ll stop in their tracks and turn their heel,

The men of Oren so brave!

The men of Oren so brave!

And after with their fathers layin’

they charge out, quick to dyin’

and Edvard yells out through his slayin’

send them back to their mothers cryin’

The men of Oren so brave!

The men of Oren so brave!

Romance/Wedding customs

Spoiler

Wedding Customs/Romance

Romance in Norland is typically more basic than most wooing in other places. Life is short, and as such most Norlanders are very direct about what they want in life. Most Norland courtings start with a man professing his admiration for a woman. The woman can choose then to accept his admiration and indulge him, outright deny him, or demand some type of proof of his love, typically in gift(s) or a poem/song. (This has lead to some men preferring to have gifts prepared at the confession.) In any way, if the man is accepted by the woman, then they can be married before a number of people, ranging from the King of Norland to a Jarl to even a practicing Veteran of the Red Brothers.

These wedding ceremonies are either held out in the forest or in a large tavern or mead hall. The actual wedding procedure involves The man and woman pledging themselves to one another before the All-Father and to dedicate their lives only to each other and the family that they plan on raising. (This is typically why shield maidens are reluctant to marry.) In belief, Norlanders take stock in both native Norland women and southern women for separate reasons. They believe that hardened Norland women will give a man strong children, while also believing that southern women expand their lineages, and though may give a man weak children initially, that their grandchildren will be just as strong anyhow.

Just some quick notes on practices in marriage:

-Bedding ceremonies are almost ubiquitous

-Adultery is not unheard of, but is generally frowned upon

-Weddings in any location are expected to be filled with drunken merryment and brawls

-Women who accept multiple men or men who seek multiple women are considered degenerate

-Marrying after a spouse has died is hardly frowned upon, but is quite common in practice

-Whoring is not frowned upon nor barred by any means, but barrs a woman from denying marriage from anyone she has slept with, since technically, she has “accepted” them all (first come, first serve while supplies last)

-An Excerpt from the Red Scrolls by Gareth Faretto.

Norland Religon: the All-Father

Spoiler

Norlanders believe that the All-Father is an agent of change in the world, and it is he who gives us all obstacles and trials to pass through in life. It is also said that the All-Father enjoys seeing how we as people adapt and overcome those obstacles.

Some would see this as a malevolent entity bent on breaking all life on this world. The Norlanders, however, pontificate that since the All-Father is also the creator of all life, he would - like a benevolent father - only want to see his children reach their maximum potential. Therefore, any and all obstacles face should not be hard enough to break you, so you must find a way to overcome or persevere your burdens. They think that through this, we grow and evolve as people. This leads to two main pillars that the faithful uphold in their communities: Celebration and Preparation

Those who practice the faith in the Norland see themselves as examples of the All-Father’s glory. Most come from humble backgrounds or harsh betrayal, but all of them from serious hardship. However, simply by existing still, they prove that they can overcome in the eyes of their peers and their All-Father.

This is why they choose to live their live with as much enjoyment as they possibly can. Apart from normal celebrations, what would normally come as morbid and solemn such as funerals are also met with great celebration where the friends and family of the deceased drink and reminisce the achievements of the deceased. Some even take it so far as to decide that in order to fill the loss of an individual, some would “create” more individuals (if you catch my drift). With many festivals, parties and celebrations, It is a small wonder, then, that the local bar/tavern/mead hall is considered the hub of the community.

However, the faithful also know that life is not happy all the time. The All-Father has guaranteed each and every person conflict in their life, so they must prepare themselves to face it. The second pillar of their community is their long-term practice of teaching everyone basic combat and survival skills. Not only are men taught in the ways of war, but women as well. This not only practically doubles the amount of defenders from an invading force, but Norlanders also believe that strong women are more likely to produce strong children who will grow up to be strong individuals. (This is why shield maidens are very sought-after as brides)

Throughout the world there are agents of change constantly in battle with agents of stagnation these agents serve to influence the world. With agents of stagnation being creatures such as order and peace while those of change would be those of war and chaos. The struggle between these agents is equal with either side very rarely gaining an advantage. Reflections of the mortal realm of either undue amounts of stagnation or change are the result of the agents of change or order pulling ahead ever so slightly in their seemingly never-ending war with one another. Examples of chaotic disorder include negative effects such as war and famine, but also blessings such as childbirth and unprecedented fortunes. Examples of order result in relative peace and safety, but also decadence and societal decay. It is worth noting, that although these things are seemingly two sides of a spectrum, they work more like a cycle, with excessive control and order leading to rebellion and chaos, as well as anarchy leading to the rise of government.
