Before the End

Bastion would come across the letter. After reading it, he would head home and write a letter in response.

“Interesting how an outsider views this conflict. The slaughter of innocents and destruction of good never seemed to faze anyone when it was Oren that was doing the killing. I don’t remember any Orenians even disagreeing when Oren marched into Riga to slaughter and rob everyone there, regardless of age, gender, or involvement in the war

Furthermore, it is apparent you only choose to hear the cries you want to hear. Did you not believe that Courland wanted to continue existing? What of stability, who aside from anarchists don’t desire such a thing? Now you expect the Coalition to respect Oren’s wishes to continue existing as a nation, even though that would surely mean that a major threat would lie to the existence of all nations that now rise against them? You call for peace at any cost. The only way there will be peace now is peace through strength.

Finally, when did you ever care about the chaos of the Courlandic peoples? Did anyone care that many of them died after being removed from there homes? Did others care while many were hunted down and slaughtered like cattle? Finally, were there any in Oren who didn’t laugh as a small handful of old Courlanders, racked by starvation and sickness, trudged their way back into Oren when their heads hung low? No. The Coalition is offering you people nearly an entire year to figure out where you will go and what you will do, far more than Oren ever gave anyone.”

Ostwalt takes the time to respond to the expected criticism.

If the administration Coalition fails to understand why some may wish to preserve their livelihoods, I hold nothing but contempt for it.

My plea is independent of the things you say, sir. If it comes to it, I will be leaving Johannesburg. Yet is it truly absurd that the Coalition considers it enough to merely allow us to escape. That is not humanitarian. May we not continue our lives as they were?

*Flazgalk replies in a rough and slow tone. "You can move back when it's invaded...."

Ostwald angrily responds to the further criticism leveled.

It is a shame that those choosing to respond would assume such things about my own beliefs. Had I fought against Courland? Had I mocked publicly those the Empire wronged? I had not.

That a plea for the preservation of a city of thousands was so received is truly troubling. This conflation of our nobles and our peasantry is a horrid failure in the judgement of Coalition leaders.

If they wish to avoid future violence against the innocents of all lands, I suggest the Coalition take the higher ground. The perishing of citizens on all sides shall only continue as no one attempts to stop it.

"Perhaps you should plead to the tyrants and gluttons of the empire to lay down their arms, to surrender to the coalition, to find a peaceful end, instead of clawing at every desperate and futile attempt to stop us, throwing more and more young men onto our blades hopelessly and selfishly trying to save not the innocents but themselves. But I am afraid the only way to remove a tick is to burn it out." Sven says hanging his new banners.

The Tragedian takes to the parchment once more.

In taking to public addresses, I also intended to elicit an Imperial response. I will refute any attempt to construe me and my partners as having a political interest at stake. We only wish to return to our lives.
