The Johannesburg Exclusion Zone, 19:20 - 22 5 59.

“They speak of a vault of pre-detonation technology secured beneath the zone,” the night air was crisp enough to bite at exposed flesh, a thick irradiated smog hanging in the night sky. No sunlight peeked through the greyed and dead valleys, and the river was thick with ash from the looming clouds left by what was summarily dubbed “The Incident.”

In this particular instance, an armored carriage rolled over the blown out landscape. Enchanted medesculors were mounted in the windows and were hard at work holding off the anomalies that wandered the wastes. Within it sat two men; for convenience, they referred to one another by the tags left on their scavenged exosuits. “HCHMSTR-MRTOK,” and “GYSMRS” respectively - whether the two had known each other prior to the tragic series of events that rocked the native homeland of Humanity was a subject best left untouched.

“Eh, cousin, ve bot know vot ‘they speak of is bullshit.. And -- .. ah!” MRTOK’s idle chatter was cut off as the atronach-drawn cart flew off the road, head first into a gully filled with the corpses of Courlandic rebels who failed to escape the blast zone. There was a crack and a distant scream as the wood and iron beast tipped over and rolled, and GYSMRS’ skull hit the wall with an unpleasant crack.

“..****, ****-..” MRTOK struggled to his feet, nausea eating at the pit of his belly - the sounds of carrion drew nearer, attracted to the pit by the crash. Light faded to darkness and his eyes fell shut, though the screech of claws drew nearer. Something raked against the wood with a horrible screech, though his body failed to respond to the terror welling within him. With the last moments of breath trapped in his lungs, he drew his Medesculor and aimed towards the dooway.

“Ey, bouss - we found one in the corpse vagon.”

“Does it look like I give ah ****, Reznovich?”

"He has the mark, Jacques. An' he's still breathin'."
