Synod of 1598

Upon the hallowed grounds of the Cathedral of Metz, the five of the College of Cardinals convene together. A lowly monk, sullen of face, permits them entry but bars their exit. Only he holds the key to the Synod chambers and is expressly forbidden to grant it to any of the Cardinals, who must remain in council until a new High Pontiff is named.

"With the death of High Pontiff Adrian I, a new High Pontiff must be named among you. He must attain a majority vote among the Synod, three votes of five. The voting will continue until a Cardinal rises to the bear the golden laurels of Horen; write your vote on a slip of paper and grant it to me, and we shall cycle through until the Creator's hand names one of you Pontiff!"

The Cardinals come together, beginning to discuss and debate who should rise to become Vicar of GOD...

Rory of Karlsburg looks about the chamber at his fellow Cardinals. His humble robes are stained with mud from the long road from Sutica when he had heard of the previous High Pontiff's passing. Looking at the slip of paper in front of him, Rory stands slowly, placing his staff down on the floor next to him.

"High Pontiff Adrian led our flock through many difficult times. Through disaster and war, the Church has maintained and continued to spread GOD's teachings. His wisdom and leadership kept the Church strong. Now, it is time to find a new Vicar of GOD to lead us. With that, I am announcing my candidacy for the Pontifical Seat of the Church of the Canon.

Everyone in this room knows what I have done to grow the Church and keep it strong. I intend to continue doing as such as the Pontiff of the Church with my first intentions being to expand the Church to all corners of Axios, grow our militant power, grow the number of clergymen so the brightest minds and most zealot of hearts can be used for our work, and to ensure each bishop is maintaining their dioceses successfully. I ask each of you to make the correct decision to strengthen the Church."

With that said, Rory writes down his name onto the slip of paper and gives it to the monk to be counted.

William of Metz rises from his chair, he looks to the synod

"My Fellow Clergymen I shall keep my speech short as we all know my positions and what I am standing now to say. But let me begin by saying it is with a heavy heart that we mourn the passing of his Holiness Adrian I. He was a dear friend and a wise Priest. He understood that for the Church to continue in administering the Faith, we must become independent of nations. "

"As his Vice Chancellor I carried out his vision. I stand before you as a Man who believes overwhelmingly in the traditions, theology and future of the Church. As High Pontiff I shall continue to seek Church sovereignty. To achieve a stronger Church we must remember our traditions, we must continue to pour our hearts into our dogma. Allow me to be honest my fellow Clergyman, the road that awaits us will be rocky. The obstacles before us are numerous, be it this ever-changing schism, maintaining our sovereignty and increasing our numbers. We shall continue on the path of revitalization and we shall see to it that each diocese by the end of my papacy is a place of stalwart faith. I tell you this, through an understanding of theology, a trust in God and an ever intensifying love for the Church, I shall see us through. "

Dear Clergymen, I ask you to cast your vote for me. We shall continue on a path to sovereignty and strength.

[Posting on behalf of Soren]

Onfroi raises a folded piece of paper, offering it to the hooded monk who takes it away.

His Eminence Josef Franz bestows his vote to the monk, who then scurries to where he has placed the rest.

---------------------

From within the council chambers, the hooded monk begins to count the votes, reading them aloud.

"Rory of Karlsburg"

"William of Metz"

"Rory of Karlsburg"

"William of Metz"

He pauses for a moment having difficulty reading the handwriting of the final vote. With a grunt, he casts all the votes aside and calls for an immediate revote. The Cardinals repeat their votes without question and resubmit their votes.

"Rory of Karlsburg"

"William of Metz"

"Rory of Karlsburg"

"William of Metz"

...."William of Metz"

The votes are cast into the fires of the second chamber; a High Pontiff named.  From outside, white smoke wafts to the heavens from the Cathedral of Metz as spectators rejoice. The hooded monk points to the white smoke, stating clear, "It is done."
