A Union Declared

The 13th of Snow's Maiden, 1619

An artist's rendering of the marriage

On a bright day in the middle of Snow's Maiden, numerous carriages and retinues of lords and ladies of the Empire gather around the small, wooden chapel of Saint Otto in the half-finished new capital of Haense. As the smell of incensed wood mixes with that of smoke and candle, the chapel is crowded with noble, clergy, and peasantry alike. Southern lords and ladies in silken finery fresh from Lorraine sit patiently in the first rows of one side, juxtaposed to the gruff Northern lords and soldiers in uniform on the side opposite. Stafyr colors, too, take up a row as relatives from Raetia travel to attend the marriage, and beyond them various other noble and aristocratic houses and families make an appearance at the wedding. Behind them sit or stand the commonfolk of the Realm, men and women of all walks of life, and many banners crowd even the outside of the chapel as not all could fit.

At the head of the congregation stand a man laden by pelts and finery and a woman wearing a brilliantly white dress. Beyond the modest altar stand Abram Vsenk, Archbishop of Jorenus and Friar Josef Baldemar in clean Canonist Church robes.

As the congregation quiets to the Archbishop's gestures, the vows are preceded by a short prayer. When at last he finishes, he asks the two in succession;

“Do you, Christopher Louis of House Stafyr, take Camille Katherine Vladov to be your lawfully wedded wife for all times before the eyes of GOD in the Seven Skies, as long as you both shall live?”

"I do."

“Do you, Camille Katherine of House Vladov, take Christopher Louis Stafyr to be your lawfully wedded husband for all times before the eyes of GOD in the Seven Skies, as long as you both shall live?”

"I do."

After their affirmation of the sacred vows of matrimony, the Archbishop seals the marriage and officiates the two into one sacred union. He then advances with the declaration:

“By the Grace of GOD, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may now kiss the bride.”

Bells toll from the cathedral at the pronouncement as the newlyweds join hands and officiate their marriage with a kiss. Subsequently, the two stride down together waving to those gathered as they make their way out of the cathedral, the multitudes of banners of those in attendance following in suit and dispersing.

Nicolas shakes his head. "Respect women!" He shouts, though no one would hear him.

"Respect the women that bear children of men!" Shouts Brynjolf, though like Nicolas, no one would hear.
