The Duel

One shot. Another. A third, a fourth, and soon enough the Imperial fortress' southwest tower had crumbled and allowed entry for the Coalition. While shock troopers from different Axis powers bounced atop the roof with ease, Gror Blackfist, personal guard to High King Verthaik Frostbeard, was content enough to provide troopers passage over the moat with his enchanted ice-boots. Until, at least, he saw Morug Goldhand and Gorum Frostbeard climb up, only to get beaten down by Imperial soldiers. Remembering his friendship with the two ancient Dwed, Gror lent his boots to an Axis trooper and clambered up the crumbling wall with his grappling hook. Once at the top, he swung his ugly black axe into the defending unit, penetrating their line and pushing deep toward the center of the fort. Finding himself surrounded and being worn down from every angle, he pulled back to the breach to recuperate, only to turn round and see the Imperial Fieldmarshal close at hand. On the craggy slope, with nowhere to turn, Gror and Aeternius fought a fierce duel of axe against blade, lasting only minutes. Even without the alchemical marvels that were granted to a few of his fellows, Gror emerged the victor, leaving Aeternius slumped against the rubble while he regrouped with his brothers.

Some time later, with the battle ended, Gror returned to the spot to find his opponent already stripped bare and coated in dust and soot from trampling soldiers. Standing over him, Gror wondered at the human's appearance - his large figure and stern, gray eyes lent him an air of authority and strength, but his smooth face and short hair gave him a vibrant and youthful look. He was beautiful, even in this state, and his men must have loved him, maybe even more than they loved their country. Gror sat with him for a time, staring at his mangled body, until the call of blowing horns spurred him back to his host, disturbing the Fieldmarshal's well-earned rest no longer.

Gror returned to his place by High King Verthaik's side and told tales to his fellow troopers of the bravery and heroism the Imperials and Urguanite Dwed displayed against impossible odds, but gave the greatest honor to the Fieldmarshal, who Gror decided was a worthy opponent after all. But, even after so honoring his enemy, the man's face still haunted Gror's dreams, forcing him to wake early every morning. And each day he looked to the horizon, still half-dreaming, all he could see, instead of the setting moon, was a gray and orange banner, as the Axis Coalition made the long march to Kal'Omith.
