"You do not appreciate what you have, until it is gone."

Victoria sat on the roof of her meager keep, gazing up at the open sky. The ocean breeze rolled over her pale skin, her usually-pulsing eyes closed and silver tresses loose. She heard the creatures somewhere down below, owls hooting and crickets that chirped from within their homes in the tall grass. SixtyThe number seemed odd to her, weirder still considering that she would surpass that number in age within the next year. It was hard for the woman to comprehend living that long, the experiences that came with those years seeming even harder to imagine being real. But they were.

Victoria Preussens had been born into the world with family and fortune and parents. Somewhere between her birth and the age of ten, she had lost all of that. In the blackness of the night, she saw the little girl she had been, with ginger hair and clothes that didn't fit, huddled alongside her sister as they had made the long trek to Tal'Ardoth in the frost-covered mountains that were home to the dwarves of Axios. She had thought they would only stay for a short time, returning to family or kin soon. She had thought wrong, and her life changed the moment she stepped through those gates.

Now, she was a woman. The thought brought a smile to her lips, inhaling at the thought of that child she had been. How different I am. Atleast my clothes fit. She was an Ascended now, a daughter too. Adopted by the man who had taken her in when nobody else would. She had married and become a mother, her children now all grown and on their own adventures. She had experienced various cultures and religions, histories and legends. It all seemed like something out of a novel...until she recalled all she had lost in those decades gone by.

She recalled her mother, tall and beautiful and always able to make her laugh. Her father, who took her out hunting rabbits and taught her of medicine. Aylwin and Ayldan Blaxton, the two men who had educated her as a girl. Her older sisters, Alyssa and Julia, whom she still prayed to see again someday. She even sometimes recalled the good days of her childhood when Belestram had still been her brother.

Most of all, she found herself thinking to herself after going down the list, she mourned the girl she had been. The future was something to look forward to, but recalling things from her past seemed to make her yearn for those days to come back. When things were easier and peaceful and when all she could feel was love.

For the first night in many years, Victoria Vientos wept, praying to the Creator and Aeriel in thanks for the life she had been given, and for the life yet to come.

Spoiler

Just wanted to do a tribute to Victoria's life so far, went back to my hometown for Spring Break and I tried to convey the emotions I felt in real life into this piece of writing.
